Monk dubbed 'Buddhist Bin Laden' targets Myanmar's persecuted Muslims
The Los Angeles Times ^ | 5/24/2015 | SHASHANK BENGALI

He's been described as the "Buddhist Bin Laden," but Ashin Wirathu thinks he has more in common with the world's most famous fictional spy.

"James Bond is a nationalist," the cherub-faced monk said in a recent interview. Flashing a smile, he offered a vague recollection of a movie in which 007, in order to extract information from a woman, took her to bed.

"While he did not take much pleasure in the act," Wirathu said, "he did it for his country."

His questionable reading of Bond aside, the firebrand Wirathu firmly says he is defending Myanmar against the people he views as the country's main enemy: its Muslims.

Wirathu, 46, might bear as much responsibility as any individual for the desperate exodus of Muslims from Myanmar aboard overcrowded fishing boats bound for Thailand and Malaysia.

I think that we shall soon see a variety of new anti-Muslim push back groups. At least I hope so. And I shall shed no tears...

The generals thoroughly politicized the Sangha in Burma and used the monks to further the authoritarian regime. The Sangha is the controlling council. As a result, the monks were used against the Christians, the Muslims and the pro democracy movement. So you aren’t seeing a typical Buddhist reaction to the aggression of the Muslims. Not too peaceful that is.

Especially a Buddhist who follow a code of conduct of not acting in a harmful way. But one of their tenants is also Wisdom that says they should view reality as it is, not as it appears to be, seeing things for what they are. In other words they don’t live in fantasy land like Obummer and this Congress. They see Islame and the Mudslimes for what they are.

Let’s see, who should I believe? Human rights groups and muslims or the Buddhist monk?

I’ll try not to let being a Buddhist sway my view.

I think I read about 20 or so American ex soldierst heading back to Iraq to fight. It must be devastating to win a battle and see the land you took recaptured by the enemy because of a bad president. As far as Muslims they always feel oppressed when they are outnumbered or so they say. Once they have the numbers they become monsters

Recommending boycotts and non-interaction with muslims on Facebook is aggression? lol

Buddhists will defend themselves. There is nothing atypical about that.

The IslamoNazis have their goal of world domination by forcing the world to submit to them by force of sword and gun and bomb. The whole, non-Islamic world should follow Burma’s example of persecuting them until they don’t exist. End of story.

Otherwise Islam will rule the world. How’d ya like that, pacifists?

No but this is beyond a defensive posture. They are pushing back against years of infiltration. In many cases, Muslim sea people may go back centuries. It is rare for a Buddhist group to resemble a militia.

Buddhist school teachers beheaded today for teaching Muslim girls science and other ways of thinking.
Buddha’s temple hearing Muslim prayer calls broadcast at all hours as a social onslaught, along with regular slaughters in Muslim controlled areas.
Buddhists slaughtered alongside Hindus as Muslims took over Bangladesh and India when they invaded under the Khans.
Destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan.

There’s a long history to the modern day of Muslims persecuting Buddhists. This guy is defending his people, as is their right.

Buddhists aren’t pacifists. I agree with the rest of your post though.

Nonsense. Tibetan Buddhist monks and lamas alike took up arms against the Chinese invasion. Boycotts and refusal to associate with muslims is hardly going beyond a defensive posture. I’d call that a bare minimum of defense.
