The overweight leader of the state's National Guard has passed a fitness test, meeting a deadline to shape up that was imposed by the governor, who himself has faced questions about his weight.
Air Force Brig. Gen. Michael Cunniff was given 90 days to slim down and meet his obligations in September after he was reprimanded by the Pentagon about his weight and for repeatedly dodging physical-fitness tests. He informed Republican Gov. Chris Christie that he was administered his fitness test Tuesday and passed, Christie spokesman Kevin Roberts said Wednesday.
It was unclear how much weight the general had to lose. He flunked his first fitness test in more than three years in November 2013 when his waist size was measured at 43.5 inches, 4.5 inches larger than allowed. ...

Ever since I PCS’d to Fort LivingRoom, I haven’t had a fitness test.

That PT test scorecard was pencil whipped to the max.
Back when I was in the active U.S. Army (my whole stretch of service), we used to joke that the real acronym for the national guard (NG), meant No Gos.
Makes me remember my second tour.
They were kicking out all these bodybuilders with hardly an ounce of fat anywhere.
Now older and more jaded, I suspect that the military had already (ahead of civilian physicians) figured out how to diagnose anorexia in males. They typically don’t turn into stick people like females but the damage to their system is similar.
They look great right up until they keel over dead. Mass discharges were cheaper than fixing the problem. What seemed to be insanity then seems likely to have been indifference now.
While doing BCT in '69 there were a fair number of Guardsmen there.Their well known chant was "N-G...not going".
One of the main movements among college liberals is currently the “fat-acceptance” movement, or so my son tells me. It would not surprise me at all to see that Chrispy Creme and the Pentagon raised the standards to something like 500 lbs to pander to the college Left.
I can see a 500 lb’er getting ready to fast rope off of a Blackhawk on one side, and everybody else in the bird roped on the other.
I went out shopping for pants today and now I’m depressed. My waste size is up to 40”. Last year I lost 25 pounds by watching what I ate and riding a bike. It’s about to happen again. Being fat sucks.
I used to just be an old man. Now I’m an old fat man.
That may have been then, but....
When my NG Infantry unit was in-country in 2005-2006, we were landowners over more territory and had more troops in-country than the Active Component. Held our own, performed the mission, and our PT average was at or above our Active Component brothers.
Same when we were back there in 2007-2008.
We had the annual fitness run. I forgot about it and when reminded, showed up with combat boots and fatigues. Most everybody had shorts, running shoes and T- shirts. I ran the 1.5, had broken a sweat and the PT instructor had asked if I could hang around and help him. The next bunch had running suits, shorts and running shoes. Instructor asked me to run with these guys and ‘motivate’ them so he didn’t have to fail anybody. There was one guy(I thought he was ancient but probably only early 40’s), and I picked him out easy early on. i helped him by pushing him, yelling at him and finally grabbing him and screaming at him “C’mon fat ass! You’re making the whole F’ng group look bad.” I yelled at him the rest of the run and he actually passed with 2 seconds to spare. Sat with him to cool him down and shared water with him. Later, a staff car pulled up beside me and said “Get in.” The guy was a Brigadier General and he laughed, told me I was a great E-4 and had a good career in front of me. Said if he had failed the run, he was getting out. He needed my motivation.
The real Air Force Brig. Gen. Michael Cunniff is inside of that guy on the right in the photo.
Chris Christie could drop a few pounds too.
I am retired NJARNG and you can bet your savings account that is true - used to piss us enlisted's off to no end but very little we could do about it.
In regards to the yuks about the NG - I've trained with 10th Mountain and 42nd Infantry and am ok with it as those who know - know the National Guard has to meet the same standards as the regular Army today, with few exceptions.
:)
My grandfather was national president of the 42nd Division Association. Don’t know if that group exists anymore. Both grandfathers and two uncles were National Guard on the Western Front in 1917-18.
My FIL had half his Guard platoon killed in Korea.
I thought he looked fit. :P
I ran the remedial PT program for a couple of years ... never had a failure after the “six weeks remedial program”! Whether you were a Major, NG, private, NCO or whatever ... Mon - Fri 5 am & 6 pm, Sunday morning at 5 am, and suggested that participants have taxi money if they could not make the return from the 5 mile run (2.5 miles each way).
