COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A 31-year-old Colorado man says Walmart fired him for doing his job.
Ramon asked his last name and hometown not be used, not because he fears retaliation from Walmart, but because he's worried about the countless shoplifters he helped the Commerce City Police Department arrest as an asset protection associate for the nation's largest retailer.
Ramon was fired Nov. 10 after subduing a store burglary suspect four days earlier.
"All I was trying to do was do my job, the best I could," Ramon said.
Surveillance video shows Ramon getting sucker punched in the eye by the 21-year-old suspect, Juan Izalbe.
The video then shows Ramon tackling Izalbe and holding him on the ground until police arrived and handcuffed Izalbe.
"(Izalbe) flat out told me 'I'm schizophrenic, I don't know what I'm going to do,'" Ramon said, explaining why he bear hugged the suspect to the floor, "When someone says something likes that, you have to take those threats seriously."

Uhh..that would be “assault suspect”.
Walmart sucks.
There have been other such stories, where stores fire employees who subdue shoplifters. Why would they be fired?
Yes I know they violated the corp. policy, but if corp. policy is not to interfere with shoplifters, you and I pay the price, in the form of higher prices for everything we honest people pay for.
The question would be why is the corp. policy to let shoplifters do anything without interruption??
Walmart has a policy that employees are supposed to ignore shoplifters. If someone is carrying out a big 52” tv, he’s free to do so and no one is supposed to stop him.
Thank you for shopping Walmart. Come again, soon.
I knew a kid who worked at Dicks sporting goods.
He told me they were trained not to interfere with shoplifters in any way. Report it to the manager, and have them call police.
He witnessed twice a group of thugs simply picking up the latest sneakers, and walking out.
I think its a new form of welfare.
I can understand exactly why the company has a policy like that, though. Having employees interact with customers -- even thieves among them -- in an adversarial way like that is probably one of the biggest exposures to physical harm and civil lawsuits that the company has.
He was assaulted by an armed suspect and had every right to defend himself.
true story:
I saw a woman shop lift from a Wal-Mart in south Florida. Middle aged black woman took some stuff from a checkout lane, walked through, and began to head for the door. She also had some cleaning supplies—like a broom and some other items.
I said, loudly to the people working—HEY! She is walking out! She didn’t pay! She looked back, scared, but continued to walk.
The employees didn’t do anything. I looked at them as she walked out the door...
Afterwards, an employee kind of shrugged and said, “We can’t do anything about it, sometimes they just get away.”
I couldn’t believe it if I had not see it with my own eyes.
The Wal-Mart employee was working as an asset protection associate for the nation's largest retailer.
Anyone who has worked for Wal-Mart knows that asset protection and security video is there for insurance purposes,
to prevent premeditated false injury claims, and employee theft.
Breaking into a cash register goes way beyond shoplifting.
Walmart years ago decided that anything under $25, at the time, wasn’t worth the effort and cost of prosecuting them. Simply banning them from their stores was all they would do.....................
It’s dangerous to shop at Walmart
They allow criminals to operate freely in their stores. Pass the word.
And if that guy has a weapon, and kills that staff person, are you going to have anything to offer the family other than prayers and condolences?
You see it, report it. No one needs to be injured or die for stuff. These companies have that stuff budget Ed.
Walmart to burglars/shoplifters: Help yourself to whatever and have a nice day.
Loser the other day in my neck of the woods doused some bank teller with gasoline, walked out with a duffel bag full of cash.
Flat out told me ‘I’m schizophrenic, I don’t know what I’m going to do,bet Hillary wished she thought of that excuse.
This makes sense. I mean, we are prosecuting police officers for “exessive force” — what will happen to Walmart if their employee attacks a guest? Even if the guest is proven to be a shoplifter?
Walmart can watch a million dollars walk out the door, and come out ahead of the 1 10-million dollar wrongful injury suit they might lose.
If I was an employee and saw a guest actually physically threatening someone, I’d risk my job. Not for some TV set, when the company told me not to.
I work as a halloween haunt monster at a theme park (it’s a fun gig), and we are told not to touch guests even if they attack us (self-defense isn’t punished, but you don’t chase or go on the attack or retaliate). I just learned that even most of the security guards can’t touch guests, only the ones that have been through special police training.
Yeah... the company has juggled all the pro’s and con’s (they have one building at their headquarters solely dedicated to LAWYERS) and has chosen to do what it has chosen to do.
If we want to help here, we shouldn’t be beating on Walmart. We should be beating on our legislators and other government to not put people like Walmart into Catch-22’s.
Don’t you know, stopping a shoplifter is racist?
China knows how to treat thieves.
