EPA rule sharply limits HFCs, gases used as refrigerants
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | September 23, 2021 | Matthew Daly, AP

WASHINGTON — In what officials call a key step to combat climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency is sharply limiting domestic production and use of hydrofluorocarbons, highly potent greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners.

The new rule announced Thursday follows through on a law Congress passed last year and is intended to decrease U.S. production and use of HFCs by 85% over the next 15 years, part of a global phaseout designed to slow global warming.

The administration also is taking steps to crack down on imports of HFCs, greenhouse gases that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. They often leak through pipes or appliances that use compressed refrigerants and are considered a major driver of global warming. President Joe Biden has pledged to embrace a 2016 global agreement to greatly reduce HFCs by 2036.

The rule, set to take effect in late October, is expected to reduce harmful emissions by the equivalent of 4.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2050, McCarthy said, a total similar to three years of emissions from the U.S. power sector.

Not to worry, your fridge and A/C won't work anyway as reliable electric power is replaced by bird-killing wind turbines and solar panels made from Chinese parts obtained from rare-earth deposits in Afghanistan.

Just putting this stuff in the AC and refrigerators as well as cars is going to cost much more than people realize.

How’s that “diversity” thing working out, comrades?

I have been hording Freon (R22, R410) for the last 15 years. My supply is right next to the toilet paper.

I figure I can barter for a lot of bullets, beans, and steaks during sizzling summer months.

The patents must be expiring on the current formulas like Freon’s were.

Fresh foods, cool homes & offices and ice for my soft drinks are SO overrated!

Let me swelter and drink spoiled milk and rotten vegetables!

Hurray for Congress & the EPA!

Best part is the replacement will be both toxic and flammable, and China will continue to produce and use as many HFCs as it wants.

The EPA and the airconditioning industry get together to force the change of a/c units because they no longer make a/c that can run the old coolant.

Amtrak— has a WAIVER— to use R-12. A federal waiver and a large stockpile for airconditioning trains.

R-12 went away from 1989 vehicles last use onwards. the r-22, then R-410. and soon R-134a to ... what.

And all about the “ozone layer” that has NOT gone away.

Smart engineers should design simple ammonia based coolants that people can use in a self-build system.

Note also that the fedgov certainly gets away with using some of these banned coolants. All for them and not for us, ever.

The new Refrigerant mandated by the Government for use in Cars “1234YF” costs ten times what the old “134a” Refrigerant cost.

Thank you for referencing that article CedarDave. Please note that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

"EPA rule sharply limits HFCs, gases used as refrigerants"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

While the feds having such powers is arguably a good idea, patriots are reminded that the states have never expressly constitutionally given the unconstitutionally big federal government the specific power to protect the environment.

”From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added].” —United States v. Butler, 1936.

And even if the states had properly constitutionally given the feds such powers, it remains that the corrupt, post-17th Amendment ratification Congress is wrongly letting non-elected, constitutionally unauthorized bureaucrats make regulatory decisions.

In other words, lawmakers are constitutionally required to accept the risk of getting kicked out of office by the way that they vote on any fully constitutionally compliant bill if their voter base doesn't like the bill.

The remedy for unconstitutionally big, alleged election-stealing, Democratic-pirated federal government that is oppressing everybody under its boots...

Consider that all the states can effectively “secede” from the unconstitutionally big federal government by doing the following.

Patriots need to primary federal and state elected officials who don't send voters email ASAP that clearly promises to do the following.

Federal and state lawmakers need to promise in their emails to introduce resolutions no later than 100 days after start of new legislative sessions that proposes an amendment to the Constitution to the states, the amendment limited to repealing the 16th and ill-conceived 17th Amendments.

Insights welcome.

They already did this many years ago. They got rid of R-12 and swapped to R-134a in vehicles and got rid of R-22 and replaced with R-410 and others in commercial refrigeration. Some home appliances also use R-134a.

I got the EPA certification for automotive A/C so I could purchase R-12 but it’s hard to find now and if you do find it $45-50 for a 12 oz can.

Have you priced a “pound” of HFO1234yf? It’s an 8 oz. can of “slightly flammable” refrigerant that’s been in use since about 2015 that averages $60 per can.

“R-12 went away from 1989 vehicles last use onwards.”

Close.... 1993 was the last year for R-12 automotive A/C systems.

There have also been several articles recently about how we little people should learn to live without AC. The conditioning is underway...

No beef. No AC. You will own nothing and like it. The list goes on and on.

I came here to say that.. yep patents expire then we discover how horrible it would be for someone else to make money.

I have an old car that took r12, I put a propane.isobutane mix in and it works great now..
