What’s Made from a Barrel of Oil?
A barrel of crude oil (42 gallons) produces just under 45 gallons of refined products, from transportation fuels to essential materials for everyday products.
Oh...one more thing. With Brandon we are producing 1.4 Million barrels less of oil per DAY. Gee....you think that’s going to cause a problem? /s
Make it illegal, and relegate it to the black market.
It is a quasi-religious thing for them. They just BELIEVE.
Cant
Non-fuel related product are made from it
All theelectric cars need parts and tires
And anything plastic. Think of all the products that are made from plastic.
Bkmk.
Diesel price has gone crazy here in Indiana.
Gas = $4/gal
Diesel = $5.50
Great infographic. Satisfied my curiosity about exactly what results from crude.
Surprised that Diesel fuel is so big.
Can those percentages be altered? Using different processing, can they make less gasoline and more of the other stuff from the same barrel?
I believe the answer is yes, within some limits.
I’m sure experts on here will give a more precise answer.
There is some, limited ability to shift a few percent around. Example is less gasoline more diesel / heating oil in the winter. Shifting which intermediate streams are sent to chemical plants is another. However, more than that would generally require building new units and making very substantial changes.
Refineries are even limited to which crude oils it can run. That is because everything must be balanced. Shift from heavy crude oil to light crude oil as an example, would change the balance of intermediate streams and some units would be left with too little to process and others with too much to process. Therefore refineries are designed for certain kinds of crude oil, and a general mix of products.
Changing the input or changing the output means major capital investments.
It’s not particularly accurate.
All oil is not created equal. And even less so in recent years.
Some oil is diesel rich. Some, much, is not. Light, tight (shale fracked) oil is not zero diesel, but it’s much less per barrel than the truly rich oil of the world like Libyan. And “rich” has nothing to do with dollars. It’s diesel content. Middle distillates (which also includes kerosene (jet fuel) rich, regardless of dollars.
The US is producing about a million less barrels/day than pre Covid. That only happens to also be pre Biden. Oil crashed its price and did so to actual negative numbers. There is enormous financing reluctance now, and yeah, Biden and the greens are obstructing here and there, but that’s not why output is down.
It’s down because shale was always about debt (and not much profit) and the lenders are not interested now. It’s ALSO a result of non shale sources in the US dying. California is dying. Alaska is, too, and no, this has nothing to do with ANWR. ANWR exploratory was authorized by President Trump. Nobody drilled because unlike in the world of politics, the actual oil companies have zero confidence there is anything there in quantity to justify the effort. Like NPRA not far to the west. Essentially tiny amounts. Not worth the enormous fight for sure.
It’s refined down enough that it is used in chocolate bars.

Natural gas isn't consistent in quality either. The futures basket quantity for natural gas is in thermal units because not all sources of natural gas have the same potential energy per cubic meter. Different locations also have different levels impurities, hence you will sometimes hear talk about dirty natural gas (not some environmental whacko talking about clean energy.)
But you can make them all out of electricity right??
Takes a heap of oil to make them car batteries.
Just an FYI, it doesn’t matter how oil if formed. There are clearly non organic hydrocarbons on Titan.
Regardless of if it’s created from millions of years of heat and pressure on organic substance, or millions of years of deeper down process, it only is found in certain rock formations. It is those that run out.
There has been, in the 100 year+ of oil exploration, 2 occasions when an empty field was found to have refilled. The oil signature markers on what refilled the field were the same as in adjacent fields that were discovered later and had not gone empty.
In other words, the refill was from an adjacent field that was in production. Drainage. It was not newly formed oil. There is no such thing as that.
It’s very popular for folks to say things like -— “peak oil tells us this” or “the peak oil people say this” and then proceed to rebut or trash.
Peak oil says only one thing. Absolutely nothing else. It says on the graph of oil production vertical axis and time horizontal axis, for a given oil well, with no later in the process modifications to that well, the curve will rise, peak, and decline.
Peak oil says nothing else. Rise, peak and decline. There has never been an oil well that did not conform to that generalized shape. And if the boundaries of a field are not changed, and post decline additions to well count drilled, the field will conform too.
