Where did all the kids go? Homeschools and Catholic schools are seeing boom times.

Over the weekend, I saw this article about public schools and parents.

Maybe it's really parents vs. schools.

This is from the Associated Press:

Families opting for homeschooling, private schools and other options sent enrollment down sharply in the first full school year of the pandemic, and generally it has been slow to recover.

In Houston, the largest district in Texas, enrollment tumbled by more than 22,000 to around 183,000 in fall 2021 and only about half of those students have returned. The district was shielded from making cuts in the first two years of the pandemic by what are known as "hold harmless" provisions, but those protections are expected to end. Superintendent Millard House has asked departments to cut $60 million from next year's budget.

So where did the kids go?  They are staying away from public schools.

The article does point out that enrollment is up in Florida, and down in California, in further confirmation of where the moving vans are going.

A Dallas friend well connected with Catholic schools told me that the phone does not stop ringing at the office. Why? Parents are calling wondering how they can move their kid from public schools. Most of them are not even Catholic. As my friend said, one mother said on the phone that she wants to send her kids to a school where boys and girls go to different bathrooms and no one makes it a constitutional issue.

Homeschooling is booming, too, or another way that parents are voting against the system. What's next? The parents will show up to vote and demand "school choice" from their state legislatures.

Moral of the story: Don't pick a fight with Mom and Dad, because they vote and pay the taxes.

I’d even be wary of the Catholic schools.

The Catholic church has brought a lot of trouble unto itself.

The Catholic school in our town is closing next year.

Catholic or Protestant private schools.

It really depends on the Administration at the school.

You have to do your homework.

RE: I’d even be wary of the Catholic schools.

Why? My nephews and nieces went to Catholic school and they all turned up to be outstanding conservative citizens.

“Compared to Public Schools?”

Compared to other parochial schools.

Hm, yes. That happened when I was a kid. I can’t remember the circumstances but I think it was the forced desegregation of public schools, i.e., busing. My 3rd-grade class (in a catholic school) had like 45 kids in it. The school was seriously swamped. I was confirmed (that’s your re-baptism when you’re catholic) in 4th grade with like 150 other kids, which is unusual - you’re supposed to be confirmed when you are much older and can prove you understand catechism. Some of the priests and nuns who were our teachers had a problem with that. We lived in an archdiocese (not Denver) then and so the archbishop only had a short drive to come and slap us in our little, chubby faces.

The irony is that they still preached leftism to us anyway. I remember them saying, for example, that Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat, and parents fighting over it.

So, send a kid to catholic school at your own risk.

We have 2 closed and 3 open Catholic schools in my area (mostly rural) and I blame the Catholic Church for the closures.

1. No nuns, it is all what we used to call lay teachers.

2. The church puts recruiting new students on the Principal instead of the local church priest. The priest is the one with weekly access to the congregation and could advocate for the school to the parents and grandparents.

Get your kids away from public schools and the teachers unions. They are determined to teach your kids to hate you and then themselves.

I have 4 kids. From 2000-2010 they attended a Lutheran K-8 school. Then from 2010-2020 they attended public elem, middle, and high schools—supposedly “good ones.”

After 3 months of “remote learning” (capping off a gradual 10 year decline in educational quality) in Spring 2020 I’d had enough and I switched my two teens from public: one to homeschooling, one back to a private Christian high school. Best decision ever.

Could have something to do with a new phenomenon - you send your daughter to a public school and she comes back a boy.

Catholic schools are fighting a rearguard action. Wokeness is seeping into some of them as well.

IMHO next the local DOH/ Department of Health needs to be done away with- at very least be elected like Boards of Education and not hired employees. It’s just like school system- all kinds of nepotism and hiring of minorities to promote DOH extremely liberal agendas. They say serve all people in community but that is BS. They do very little for true every day health promotion and just want to limit your freedoms with masks and lockdowns if they perceive emergency. Completely self serving revolving door for liberal agenda and dependent and perverse populations they wish to help. I actually think should do away with local DOH altogether and emergency response be coordinated at state level and administered locally by first responders. Just my thoughts. At any rate- know this- your local Department of Health is not much different than liberal education system.

My nieces and nephews also. They are more Catholic than my family was growing up. And they are not cafeteria Catholics, picking and choosing what they agree with. All strongly dislike this Pope. One went to the March for Life this year.
