One of the guys I got my chemistry degree with was involved in a project where they put schizophrenics on dialysis and it would completely eliminate their symptoms.

His job was to analyze the dialysate to determine what compound was causing the schizophrenia.

Haven’t seen him in a few decades, so I have no idea how it turned out.

“But behind the Iron Curtain in the 1950s, psychiatrist Dr Yuri Nikolayev was treating patients at a Moscow sanatorium with a radical form of fasting...”

Oh is that what they are calling Soviet starvation of their political prisoners now??

I was thinking: There is a big difference between voluntary fasting and being forced not to eat.

This comes out just in time for food shortages. I’m waiting for when someone gets Grandpa Poopypants on video soiling his drawers and it goes viral. The next day the NYT/WAPO “journalists” will write the article that it’s now cool to soil your drawers and maybe good for your health! Everyone does it!

With intermittent fasting, which I practiced for 2 long years, I never felt deprived coz I was able to eat everything I like. And there was no strict quantity limitation.

But when I started on this program, it took couple of weeks for my body to adjust to getting hungry at a certain time. After that 2 week period, I was not hungry right after waking up, and so delayed my breakfast to after 10AM. The dinner between 4 and 5PM with a large meal and a small snack at 8 PM and I was good to go until breakfast next day at 10AM.

Benefits for me were reduction in A1C and weight loss without feeling deprived.

Multi-day fasting and daily intermittent fasting combined with eliminating rice, bread, pasta, soda, and added sugar have been a game-changer for me personally over the last 6 years.

More energy, better blood-work and overall better health. I have not had so much as a sniffle since 2015, which - I will acknowledge - may be correlation as opposed to causation since I never really got sick much anyway.

That being said, I will usually cheat with a bowl of ice cream on Saturdays as my one indulgence. I also fast the day before and the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas so I can enjoy those days without restrictions. It's all about moderation. Your mileage may vary, but I would recommend trying OMAD (one meal a day) at least a few days a week.

After one and a half days I start hallucinating Italian bread.

I do 16:8 intermittent fasting 3-5 days per week, coupled with a low carbohydrate (<50 g) diet daily. Finally, I cap my total daily calorie intake to about 2,300 with 6 days/week rigorous exercise. My BMI is 23. Never have I felt healthier.

I’ve practiced intermittent fasting for more than 15 years. It is a healthy way to live and if it helps to prevent over-eating, that’s a bonus. Most Americans could stand to reduce their calories.

. . . "INTERMITTENT FASTING MAY HOLD THE KEY TO BETTER MENTAL HEALTH" . . .

" . . . Consuming nothing but at least a liter of water a day for 25 to 30 days..." . . .

.

Well - you gotta admit that anyone who submits to this does indeed
have serious mental health issues which need to be addressed...

Well sure that’s fine for Russians. My gran could’ve done it, if you threw in a stone.
But what about the rest of us?

I didn’t know it was called intermittent fasting, until recently, but I’ve been doing this for over 10 years. First meal is at 11 am and last meal is at 5 pm. I just called it skipping breakfast and not snacking after dinner.

Kept my weight down and my mood positive. Blood work is good and I do not feel deprived at all. It is about calorie reduction but not by eliminating entire categories of food. If I want bread, I eat bread. If I want cake, I eat a pc of cake. What I found w/ myself is that I don’t really want to eat junk food/crap food, at least not much and not often.

Everyone is different, but this has worked for me.

Nice informative article.

This “hasn’t had breakfast in 40 years” statement is misleading. Skipping a morning meal is what’s happening here. One can eat Breakfast any time of day - that’s in fact what it means. Break Fast.

Don’t need to scare otherwise curious people - they think skipping breakfast means no Bacon and Eggs. Intermittent fasting is always enthusiastically described by everyone who has given it a fair shake, near as I can tell.

And it doesn’t cost anything.

Yeah, I was able to lose all the fat with IF, it works really well.

You *can* eat whatever you want provided the calories are reduced, but one very quickly learns what foods are “stick to your ribs” and what foods will “spoil your dinner”.

I have a pretty strong sweet tooth, so it was difficult at times, but I’ve found mixed nuts, cheddar, eggs to be particularly good at keeping one feeling “full”.

With practice though, I’m able to eat most anything. Willpower and discipline are necessary at times, despite the experts. The key thing is to look at these things as permanent lifestyle changes. Not something to be abandoned and “go back to normal”.

Normal is what made everybody grossly Obese and dying early.

Could this explain what is happening in the west? As we overflow with food and easy living; mental illness anxiety and depression rage.
Maybe we could go for some lean times to sharpen our wit and health?
