This is important to work out. Independent voters are not merely people refusing formal party alignment. They are that great globular middle of American politics – respectable white people, that is, white people who care about looking respectable to white people, who themselves care about looking respectable to other white people.
I call this class of Americans “globular,” because they can be pushed and pulled, depending on the context at election time. They are fickle. They believe they are immune to the consequences of politics. But they can be shamed, as respectability among other white people, who are the people who really matter, is a key motivator for them.
I suspect abortion is central to their concept of respectability. After all, half are women. I think the other half associates respectability with the social status of businessmen, as this is an affluent class of Americans that identifies with owners more than workers, and while inflation is good for wages, it’s bad for the bosses who pay them.

Thinking about writing an article about ‘respectable blacks’. You know, the clean and articulate ones. That’ll go over well I’m sure.
Remember those very social kids clicks in high school? Always knew the latest trendy words, clothes, hairstyles. Ended up going to college where they again, had lots of friends and socialized a lot. Never had much of any talent aside from socializing and being the in crowd.
They all have facebook accounts now and document how awesome their lives are. That be them.
He may have a point in that Democrats are insular. But then their respectability is also insular. Fetterman is a vegetable or a garden slug but people vote for him because they are insular and are part of the party... insular conformists.

Why is this an either/or question?
Both/and.
CLONING . . . . the (ahem) . . SCIENCE . . of reproducing living organisms (including complex human organisms) . . . is based on the SCIENCE that all they need is . . . ONE CELL ! . . . . . so that “collection of cells” is an army of human beings.
We also know the Republicans would have lost without aggressive gerrymandering in Florida and interference by the US Supreme Court in Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana.
We also know that Democrats gerrymandered in states they controlled, and gamed the census to keep seats in Democrat states, and played fast and loose with the mail-in votes, among other things.
Winston doesn’t call them respectable white people (though that’s who they are).
Your author mistakes privilege for respectability.
Respectable white people = code for the country club set who base their political outlook on appearances and what everyone else in their set believed ... dead souls one and all.

Unfortunately, that mush is what we are up against and it makes sense to far too many people.
The only people who “returned” to the democrats this year that weren’t already there, were snowflakes who are offended more by Trump than being robbed, raped or having their sons castrated in California and young single women who demand the freedom to spread their legs with no repercussions.
