A higher dose of magnesium each day keeps dementia at bay (550+ mg a day from all sources)
Medical Xpress / Australian National University / European Journal of Nutrition ^ | March 23, 2023 | Khawlah Alateeq et al

More magnesium in our daily diet leads to better brain health as we age, according to scientists.

The researchers say increased intake of magnesium-rich foods such as spinach and nuts could also help reduce the risk of dementia, which is the seventh biggest killer globally.

The study of more than 6,000 cognitively healthy participants in the United Kingdom aged 40 to 73 found people who consume more than 550 milligrams of magnesium each day have a brain age that is approximately one year younger by the time they reach 55 compared with someone with a normal magnesium intake of about 350 milligrams a day.

"Our study shows a 41 percent increase in magnesium intake could lead to less age-related brain shrinkage, which is associated with better cognitive function and lower risk or delayed onset of dementia in later life," Ph.D. researcher Khawlah Alateeq said.

"This research highlights the potential benefits of a diet high in magnesium and the role it plays in promoting good brain health."

"Since there is no cure for dementia and the development of pharmacological treatments have been unsuccessful for the past 30 years, it's been suggested that greater attention should be directed towards prevention," Dr. Erin Walsh, said.

The researchers say a higher intake of magnesium in our diets from a younger age may safeguard against neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline by the time we reach our 40s.

"The study shows higher dietary magnesium intake may contribute to neuroprotection earlier in the aging process and preventative effects may begin in our 40s or even earlier," Ms Alateeq said.

"We also found the neuroprotective effects of more dietary magnesium appears to benefit women more than men and more so in post-menopausal than pre-menopausal women, although this may be due to the anti-inflammatory effect of magnesium."

My wife and I have been taking a single magnesium tablet a day for many years. It boosts the total amount we get, but accounts for only 1/3 of the RDA.

We get the rest, we hope, from our food choices.

I get magnesium glycinate powder. I never have a bad reaction to it. Some magnesium supps are supposed to loosen your bowels too much. But this should be good for the constipated.

The mag glycinate I bought last month >>>>> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F7OZJQ4?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k1_1_31&=&crid=3HICASXA35IHG&=&sprefix=magnesium+glycinate+powder+bulk

Not to mention blood pressure. A major cause of high bp today is drinking filtered water.

We have a naturally high mineral content water, and the water filters I have in place keep the good minerals there, while pulling out bad ones.

It’s good to keep minerals, wherever you can.

Drink the water from your cooked veggies, too.

Just to expand on this, since I’ve done considerable research, we should supplement with upwards of 800-1000mg per day, plus what comes from food, in no more than ~200mg at a time. Do NOT take oxide form; it does not absorb (only like 4% is absorbable). Take Glycinate or malate. Even citrate is not that absorbable.

Because magnesium is our major relaxing mineral, our bodies will purge it in high doses when we’re stressed out, as our bodies are preparing us for fight or flight. It then becomes a self fulfilling prospect as the lower in mag you are the more stressed you are. The more stressed you are the more your body purges your mag. The key is to take the right form (even the brand matters), the right amount and do it consistently.

I take 20000 D3 daily. My bad ear is now hearing improved. To balance high D2 intake, say 10000 units, you should also take K2/ which is fat soluble same as D3. To counter the calcium precipitation that you get with high dose D3. __________D3 and K2 are best taken with a meal that has animal or vegetable fats. To maximize absorption.

There is a Brazilian Dr. Cicero Galli Coimbra/ invented the Coimbra vitamin D protocol/ who puts people on 50-100 thousand D3 IU units daily.
https://www.hsctstopsms.com/simple-overview-of-coimbra-vitamin-d-protocol/
For serious problems such as Multiple Sclerosis. He pooh-poohs K2 and says that magnesium is more effective at such high D3 doses. To balance out the calcium precipitation of D3

#### And I believe him. This Doc. Research his name for more details

In addition to our supplements, we enjoy a hot Epsom Salt bath about once a week.

“I take Magnesium at night and found it helps me sleep better.”

Everyone likes magnesium. This is shown by how many magnesium books there are at Amazon.

Such as https://www.amazon.com/Magnesium-Miracle-Revised-Updated/dp/034549458X

“... due to the anti-inflammatory effect of magnesium.”

I take it for my back/hip pain. I decided that it was more a muscle issue than a joint issue.

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer. In any case it was a total success. My pain was reduced 90%. It only acts up after walking a fair distance and even then the pain is greatly reduced.

I was unable to function before. It just wasn’t worth the discomfort. Now I am back to my old self.

I take 315 mg per day. I should take it twice a day, but I’m a once a day person if I can manage that.

Now I find out I will also not end up like Biden, Fetterman, and Feinstein.

“In addition to our supplements, we enjoy a hot Epsom Salt bath about once a week.”

The town of Epsom, England, is named after its magnesium baths. But those are luke warm. Those are effective. But hot is better. Many hot springs have magnesium salts.

Here is me favorite anti-inflammatory. Don’t believe me. Just read the 2000+ reviews. Take with vitamin C to enhance its action. I take this with the buffered “C” called sodium ascorbate.

Yes I buy this by the kilo -— https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OSJ7S?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k5_1_6&=&crid=2D4NMGQLNVTFB&=&sprefix=jarrow

I’m taking 400 mg magnesium every day. It’s combined with calcium (1000 mg), D3 (600 IU) and zinc (15 mg). I need the calcium to help with my bone density, and magnesium is helping me with sleep as a side benefit.

Since my liver transplant, my hepatologist has been having me take two 400mg tablets of magnesium oxide (241.5 mg of elemental magnesium) in the morning, and two at night. I get my blood drawn regularly, and my magnesium level is always in the normal range.

So, to hear that it helps hold off Alzheimer’s is great news.

“My Dr recommended Magnesium L-Threonate because it crossed the blood brain barrier more effectively. Your opinion?”

I have some. Just got it, so have not opened it up yet. Go read some Amazon reviews. It might be hype? But the hype is that it enhances cognitive thinking. Due to crossing the blood brain barrier.

You have a good Doc. Most of the time, the Amazon reviews on xxx are better than what your Doc knows.
