One of the American Civil War's most famous generals once lived on California's Central Coast and his home can still be visited.
General William Tecumseh Sherman is best known for his "March To the Sea" where he marched from Atlanta to Savannah, destroying military targets, industry, infrastructure, and civilian property. The march was pivotal in ending the war and forcing the Confederacy to surrender.
Before Sherman was fighting on the east coast and leading to the defeat of the traitorous Confederacy, he was stationed in Monterey and lived at the now-named Sherman Quarter, on Calle Principal, a block away from Colton Hall.
The home is part of Monterey State Historic Park and is closed to the public, but the exterior of the home can be viewed from the street or while visiting the Larkin House garden.
While stationed in Monterey, Sherman was in charge of troops construction of the Presidio Military Reservation.

He was also living in Louisiana when the war broke out, apparently slavery all around did not seem to bother him.

What Sherman did was a war crime.

Sherman probably had to hide out there because a lot of Rebs would want to whack him for those hideous deeds after the surrender when Lincoln orderd him to destroy the defensless south so it couldn't rise up again.
then the FED's got bored and went and took care of "the Indian Problem" in a similar way

The March to the sea: Targeting civilian property for destruction in violation of Lincoln’s Lieber code.

I wished he wouldn’t have burned all the beautiful antebellum plantation homes.

I am not aware that Lincoln ordered Sherman to target civilian property for destruction. Do you have a reference for that?

the article is flawed on the facts and makes it sound like it was justified.
(kinda like how they presented the genocide of native americans)

He shouldn’t have used all those Sherman tanks.

One amazing thing about Sherman in Monterey is the story of his ship sinking twice in the same day as he arrived. Once coming into port in San Francisco and a second boat he took to try to save survivors.

Thanks for this. Having grown up in the Monterey bay area I’d never heard this. I might go buy it before it’s razed.

the Yankee newspapers at the time , and now Historians kept it a secret about how the destruction of the south after the surrender went down in order to keep Lincoln's hero status. They pulled it off by refusing to accept the surrender until they were sure the armies were disbanded and all weapons surrendered, then the north sent in the crazies to loot rape and burn everything tore up railroad tracks bridges killed livestock burned atlanta to the ground
but history is written by the victor
the people up north never even knew it happened or they would not have worshipped Lincoln as such a hero , (that was before Twitter)

Lincoln was complicit, thats why I disagree with Mark Levin about how great he thinks Lincoln was
to me Lincoln is just the 1860's version of a George Bush or Obama (same thing)

Sherman’s March was certainly different from the 18th century European War practices, but it was typical or mild, compared to what wars have been throughout world history. Much of what happened was done by undisciplined soldiers on their own.
