Casey Cagle takes slight lead, polls show (GA Lt. Gov. primary)

Two local pollsters on Wednesday said a withering series of TV ads has given Casey Cagle a slight lead for the first time over Ralph Reed in the Republican race for lieutenant governor.

In a combination of television spots, direct mail and automated phone calls, Cagle has accused the ex-Christian Coalition leader of defending "sweatshops" in the Northern Marianas Islands that coerced children into prostitution and forced women to have abortions.

"Preposterous. This is beyond the pale," complained Jared Thomas, manager of the Reed campaign.

A tracking poll of 400 likely GOP voters published Wednesday by Insider Advantage, an independent firm, showed Cagle leading Reed 41 percent to 36 percent. Margin of error is five percentage points.

Separately, Strategic Vision, a Republican-oriented public relations firm, gave Cagle a slimmer, 42 percent to 41 percent lead over Reed. It polled 450 Republican voters, and its survey had a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

This was not Ralph Reed's year to run (a lobbyist in 2006), but Cagle's ads sounds like they're going to far. Indeed, the primary is getting so nasty, the ultimate GOP nominee may be crippled in the general election.

The 'Rats must be loving this.

On the plus side for Reed, it looks like the Marianas charge is bogus. On the minus side, looks like he sold out to get pro-abortion pro-gay Rudy G. to endorse him.

In what way is Reed perceived to have sold out?

Mr. Religion looking for moderate votes by promoting his endorsement by Mr. Abortion?

Cagle remains our best shot in the general. I think Reed carries too much baggage and isn't fully committed to the job with which he's running for.
