Risk V. Reward: The Anti-Romney Phone Calls
The Atlantic ^ | November 16, 2007 | Marc Ambinder

Posted on 11/17/2007 6:08:40 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Whodunnit?

Here is why it is unlikely that Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson or any top-tier challenger to Mitt Romney had anything to do with the wave of anti-Mormon, Anti-Romney phone calls in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Think about the reward. Would the questions asked by the firm elicit any meaningful data for the campaign who wrote them? Would the relative reward of a few dozen voters changing their minds about Romney because of his Mormonism be worth the avalanche of embarassment and ill-will that would accrue to the candidate who authorized the phone calls?

Political consultants aren't stupid -- they understand that culprits eventually will out, that the profusion of citizen reporters and company moles virtually guarantees that the identity of the organization that contracted with the phone bank will one day be known.

Even if the goal is to earn media coverage by planting some audacious phone calls and then allowing the media pick up on them -- notice how the media coverage repeats the explicit anti-Mormon claims -- it's probably true that the sympathy that attaches itself to Romney washes out the reptition.

My guess: the responsible party is a free agent sympathetic to but not associated with a real campaign -- or an anti-GOP group testing messages -- or a dull party apparatchick who works for a small, inconsequential interest group funded by wealthy donors.

That’s what I think. This is right out of their playbook. Anyone who criticizes Mitt is an anti-Mormon bigot.

Mitt would make a great running mate for Hillary. Then they could pretend to be victims together.

Romney is friends with some of this family:

I don’t know for sure but this is really bizarre.

I also wondered if it was a Democrat campaign staff doing this.

Did you see the post by BNG on a "Rovian" thread? His wife calls Romney "Guy Smiley" and when she saw him on TV, asked if Romney got nominated, would he choose Kermit as a running mate? Made me laugh out loud!

(Sounds like a cool wife)

The main suspects right now are the McCain and Giuliani campaigns but given the posts on this and other threads, it could well be Fred Thompson Freepers. Many of the Romney threads I have posted have degenerated into debates on Mormon doctrine but hey, it must be “Mittwits” and not “Frednecks”, “McCaniacs” or “Rudyites” who are to blame despite the fact that persons from all three campaigns, have been publicly caught either passing on or originating such bigoted attacks in the past. The truth will come out. We will see.

Do you have any names of "Fred Thompson Freepers" that you are accusing of "push-polling" Mitt in two states (IA & NH, pretty high-tech for lil' ol' Freepers...) or do you just like to blindly accuse opponents supporters of mischief?

There have been a few that I have seen, outdistanced by the multiple Romneyacs bashing Fred Thompson threads.

I visit many conservative sites and am a member of a few, and the key word from many Romneyacs seems to be that you are a ‘bigot’ if you don’t like Mitt. Mitt’s crew must’ve given them that one in the campaign e-mails.

IMHO... It was put out by a Company run by Romney supporter Mormons. My best guess is they did it for free. With/without the knowledge of the Romney campaign. I’m betting that it was with!

My point was that there has been plenty of people in this political season who have been trying to use Romney's religion against him using methods that are equally disgusting, many of whom are Frednecks who post here on FreeRepublic.

As to any names of people making such accusations, I don't even have to go looking. Check out response #22 from Beagle8U on your own thread.

It was a Mormon firm (its based in UT so it has to be Mormon)...They probably did it for free. Because hey, everyone knows them Mormons stick together!

Everyone else who has seen this story has been upset about the rank bigotry it clearly represents and just how poorly it will reflect on the Republican party but you and a handful of Freepers here seem to be far more concerned about trying to link this back to the Romney campaign in order to score political points. I imagine that's a tacit admission that this push polling was, in fact, bigotry so at least that's a step in the right direction given what has been posted on FR about Romney's religion. But your seemingly desperate need to connect this admittedly bigoted attack to the campaign victimized by it, based on no particular evidence, is, to say the least, unfortunate.

And you, as a 'charter member of the Romney FR resistance', seem equally far more concerned about disparaging Freepers than waiting to see how all of this eventually comes out.

I suspect it was a Romney supporter, trying to ‘help.’

Sorry but it was a Mormon owned company, who certianly have Mormon employees, there is something wrong it they think it appropriate to do that poll. In the end my guess is they agreed to do it, hoping it would help Romney.

And its not just some Freepers who see the possibity of a rogue supporter.

Go read Liz Mair, Politico, eyeon08.com, and others. I would be very surprised if Romney knew of this before the fact.

Check your facts Skippy!

Is or is not the founder of that company Mormon?

How many of those that control the company have been donating to the Romney campaign?

The company is full of Romney supporters that have been donating large sums to his campaign.

I stand by my post based on all the facts that have been posted here since this story broke.

Just mentioning that someone is Mormon is no more of an attack on the Religion than mentioning that Mike Huckabee is Baptist!

It appears we don't have to try and link anything. These folks are going to do it for us.

You know what is odd, you guys wear Mitts Mormonism like a badge when you need it and an anchor when it is turned against you in any form or fashion, real or not.

More often the word Mormon is brought up by you and other Mitt Supporters than anyone else.

Mitt has more than enough problems for those in the Conservative movement, we don't need the Mormonism bit.

I don’t know for sure but this is really bizarre.

A few months ago, I had the oddest call from someone who identified himself as being from the Romney campaign, who purported to be seeking my support for Governor Romney in the primaries.

However, this individual was the rudest individual that I have spoken with over the years when dealing with politics; he certainly was a poor representative if he was really from the Romney camp. My guess is that he wasn't really a Romney supporter, and that his rudeness was supposed to make me think unfavorably of Governor Romney.

My daughter took a pic of me with my Fred Thompson sign while at a rally. When we got home and looked at the pics, over my head is a Ron Paul sign! (a handful of Paul supporters came to the Thompson rally). I have a dear friend who is a devout Paul supporter and I thought she'd get a kick out of it! I'm hoping she'll respond since she hasn't spoken with me since I told her I don't support Paul. :(

Orem, Utah based Western Wats company probably hires residents of Utah county where it is located, right??

According to data taken in 2000 by the ARDA, 88% of the overall population, and 98% of religious adherents in the Provo-Orem area are LDS[6].

Why would any educated Freeper guess that Western Wats hires predominantly MORMONS? Duh!
