Mitt Romney thinks Obamacare is a bad law that will hurt the country, but disagrees with how conservatives in Washington are trying to get rid of it.
In an exclusive interview with CNNs Jake Tapper, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee said using the politically charged Affordable Care Act as a wedge in Washingtons fiscal wars is counterproductive.
"We're more effective tactically not to use a shutdown of some kind to pursue the ... anti-Obamacare objective. I don't think that will be as effective," Romney said in the interview conducted on Friday in Boston.
"The tactic of using a government shutdown to try and push that will be counterproductive politically, that it's going to end up hurting our party, and it could well - it could be inconvenience, and hurt some individuals as well, and checks are late, and so forth," said Romney.
Romney, however, gave Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas credit for speaking for more than 21 hours against the health care law, a marathon he called a "quasi filibuster."
But, Romney adds, "I think there's a better way of getting rid of Obamacare - my own view - and that is, one, delaying it by at least a year."
"The other would be potentially working hard to get Republicans elected to the House and Senate and they'd be able to do in a traditional way," said Romney....

Romney is a progressive. He agrees with the democrats. Of course he’s going to disagree with Cruz.
who?
Polling shows shutting down Govt. is a disaster for republicans. The simple reason is only 1/2 the republicans think it is a good idea. It isn’t just Mittens, 25 senators voted for cloture. Cruz could only muster 19 votes. If we can’t hold our caucus what makes you believe the majority of Americans will back the play? Polling doesn’t show it, actions don’t show it, wishing won’t make it so.
I am not against anyone making a principled stand but to think this turd will smell like roses is a fantasy when the signs are out there.
That seals it. If Romney thinks it’s a bad idea, it must be golden.
Isn’t this the guy who after he lost, his son told people that his dad didn’t really want the Presidency? We should pay attention to him why?
Not funding Obamacare doesn’t defund the govt. It’s Reid and Obama who would shut it down voluntarily.
>> to think this turd will smell like roses is a fantasy
What is the ‘turd’ you’re referring to?
I agree, and if Romney and the rest of the Ruling Class hadn't worked so hard over the past 25 years to purge Reaganism out of the party, we wouldn't be going through all this.
It’s his right to disagree - but why go public with it???
Shutting down the gov. Look I know a lot of people think it will be “fun” to shut the whole thing down. I think it is bad policy. You said it would be rid and Obama’s fault if Gov shut down over Obamacare. I have heard the talking point. I like to win. We have tried 43 times to repeal Obamacare. Until you change the White House it is not going to happen. I have looked at the polling data. No matter how you frame it shutting down the Govt polls poorly. The numbers are around 65/35. In other words not close. Who gets blamed? No matter how you spin it the republicans are to blame in the neighborhood of 63/37.
The Dems came out with a new talking point, give us single payer or we will shut it down, they say see how absurd the notion is?
So yes the turd I mention is the policy of shutting the gov down. The reprocusions will be bad and it will get us no closer to the goal. As I said I would never say to anyone not to do it I just personally think it is a bad idea. If our caucus was together and the polling a little closer than maybe but it is not,
GIVE ME A BREAK.
REPEAL AND REPLACE THE GOP...
PALIN~CRUZ 2016
Romney so brilliant at tactics caved to the Dems on Romneycare.
Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.
Sometimes you need to lead rather than follow the polls. If the GOP gets Obamacare defunded or delayed for a year, every Republican and some independents and Dims will support the tactics. If they fold after a short shutdown, few will see the tactics as worth it.
It is impossible to get it delayed or not funded. For two years Obama has said he will not negotiate on debt ceiling or Obamacare. He has said all those things recently. An article out today also has spoken of his resolve on this. To do any of this it takes his signiture or 21 dem senators to override veto. So even if there is a shutdown how do you win.
I understand your point about polls. Sometimes when you lead you can flip public opinion. The problem is the public has seen 43 times repealing of Obamacare, a court battle, and now a shutdown? They see it as sour grapes. Every poll shows same thing Obamacare is either even or unfavorable by a few points but shutting the gov down over it is toxic.
As a policy move it is a bad play IMO.
Romney shut up and go away.
Now.
The point you might be missing is whose voters benefit the most from the government operating and thus would be hurt the most by it not operating? Do you think if the government does not operate for a bit, the GOP voters will be hurt more or the Dim voters?
So Obama can say whatever he wants. If the GOP Congress will not pass a CR without the Obamacare defunding or delay or if they refuse to raise the debt ceiling without the Obamacare defunding or delay, then the money won’t be there. Obama can huff and puff as much as he wants, but the money wont be there.
Heck a great strategy for the House would be to pass what they will accept and then LEAVE WASHINGTON. They also should refuse to talk to anyone in the national press. Then they can wait until enough Dim voters raise enough sand with Obama and the Dims and then a compromise can be worked out or they can just hold tough until they get what they passed.
We will see how it plays. I leave you with one huge thing. The republican caucus is in disarray. Cruz could only get 19 senators from his own. The Dems are holding together
