Living Room Somewhere - (CSC wires) What did you do during Thanksgiving? If you are like most people, you stuffed your belly and face so much that you could give the Pillsbury Doughboy a run for his money. And if you were able to move to the couch, you were probably watching football, basketball, hockey, or figure skating. Why figure skating? It's always on television.

Here's a rundown of what was going on while you were stuffing your face with stuffing.

NFL - The Dolphins did a number on the Cowboys. While Toby Keith highlighted the halftime show with great music, there was nothing exciting about the game for the Cowboys fans. Oh well! There is always next Thanksgiving. Gobble! Gobble!

NFL - Of course the Detroit Lions are bad, but the Green Bay Packers couldn't beat them. Maybe next time for the Cheesehead Fans.

NHL - What is the best part of an NHL game?

Tie Domi

Fighting!
Can't we all get along?

NCAA Basketball - While you were busy trying to locate who ate the last piece of pumpkin pie, Duke manhandled Pacific University. The question remains: Do you really care? Sure you do. Really!

NHL - Oh! On Turkey Day, they did play hockey. The Maple Leafs, Canucks, Coyotes, and Avalanche won their respective games. Yippee!

Sports Humor
Do you love sports, but lack anything funny to say about sports? Well, that's why we are here. To make you funnier!

Jocks Vs Nerds (You know who you are!)

"Is it better to be a jock or a nerd?"
$ Michael Jordan having "retired," with $40 million in endorsements, he makes $178,100 a day, working or not.

$ If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head.

$ If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550 while he's there.

$ If he decides to have a 5 minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it.

$ He makes $7,415/hr more than minimum wage.

$ He'll make $3,710 while watching each episode of Friends.

$ If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him a whole 12 hours.

$ If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would have to do it at the rate of $2.00 every second.

$ He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be reimbursed $33,390 for that round.

$ Assuming he puts the federal maximum of 15% of his income into a tax deferred account (401k), his contributions will hit the federal cap of $9500 at 8:30 a.m. on January 1st.

$ If you were given a penny for every 10 dollars he made, you 'd be living comfortably at $65,000 a year.

$ He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100 meter dash in the Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon.

$ While the common person is spending about $20 for a meal in his trendy Chicago restaurant, he'll pull in about $5600.

$ This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past presidents for all of their terms combined.

Amazing isn't it? However...

$ If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 450 years, he'll still have less than Bill Gates has today.

$$$ Game over. Nerd wins.

Workout At The Gym
(Beware of Christmas Gifts!)

At the Gym

For Christmas this year my wife purchased me a week of private lessons at the local health club. Though still in great shape from when I was on the varsity chess team in high school, I decided it was a good idea to go ahead and try it. I called and made reservations with someone named Tanya, who said she is a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and athletic clothing model. My wife seemed very pleased with how enthusiastic I was to get started.

Day 1

They suggest I keep this "exercise diary" to chart my progress this week. Started the morning at 6: 00 a.m. Tough to get up, but worth it when I arrived at the health club and Tanya was waiting for me. She's something of a goddess, with blond hair and a dazzling white smile. She showed me the machines and took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill. She seemed a little alarmed that it was so high, but I think just standing next to her in that outfit of hers added about ten points. Enjoyed watching the aerobics class. Tanya was very encouraging as I did my sit ups, though my gut was already aching a little from holding it in the whole time I was talking to her. This is going to be great.

Day 2

Took a whole pot of coffee to get me out the door, but I made it. Tanya had me lie on my back and push this heavy iron bar up into the air. Then she put weights on it, for heaven's sake! Legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made it the full mile. Her smile made it all worth it. Muscles feel great

Day 3

The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the tooth brush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I am that I have developed a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was okay as long as I didn't try to steer. I parked on top of a Volkswagen. Tanya was a little impatient with me and said my screaming was bothering the other club members. The treadmill hurt my chest so I did the stair monster. Why would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by the invention of elevators? Tanya told me regular exercise would make me live longer. I can't imagine anything worse.

Day 4

Tanya was waiting for me with her vampire teeth in a full snarl. I can't help it if I was half an hour late, it took me that long just to tie my shoes. She wanted me to lift dumbbells. Not a chance, Tanya. The word "dumb" must be in there for a reason. I hid in the men's room until she sent Lars looking for me. As punishment she made me try the rowing machine. It sank.

Day 5

I hate Tanya more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. If there was any part of my body not in extreme pain I would hit her with it. She thought it would be a good idea to work on my triceps. Well, I have news for you Tanya, I don't have triceps. And if you don't want dents in the floor don't hand me any barbells. I refuse to accept responsibility for the damage, you went to sadist school, you are to blame. The treadmill flung me back into a science teacher, which hurt like crazy. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like a music teacher, or social studies?

Day 6

Got Tanya's message on my answering machine, wondering where I am. I lacked the strength to use the TV remote so I watched eleven straight hours of the weather channel.

Day 7

Well, that's the week. Thank goodness that's over. Maybe next time my wife will give me something a little more fun, like free teeth drilling at the dentist's.

NFL & NCAA FOOTBALL

Assuming you had the time to watch, "WHAT DID WE LEARN THIS PAST WEEKEND IN FOOTBALL"?

1. Republicans are to blame for Texas A&M having a bad year. Just ask the people "in the know" at that "conservative" school Texas A&M. Next week: Republicans are to blame for naming the state. Stay tuned.

2. Nebraska fired their head football coach, Frank Solich, this week. Guess what? They can still beat Colorado. Too bad they couldn't schedule Colorado every game.

3. Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Cotls head coach, made a mistake before the half. When asked about it, he acknowledged it. The Colts couldn't recover from the costly punt return for a touchdown.

4. Keyshawn Johnson, sort of still with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is "stunned" at how he has been treated by the Bucs. When you don't show up for meetings, practices, team days, and a host of other things, it should not come as a surprise. Well, unless your name is Keyshawn Johnson.

5. Eli Manning is probably the best QB in the Nation and he will probably not win the Heisman. Hello Jason White of Oklahoma.

6. Nevada is great for gambling not for football. Boise State, that great college from Idaho, unleashed on Nevada. So much for the Nevada hype of "destroying" Boise State this year. Oh well, maybe next year.

7. Did you know that Tim Hasselbeck of the Washington Redskins is related to the Seattle Seahawks QB, Matt Hasselbeck? We were sure you hadn't because we were only reminded a million more times on Thursday and Sunday. Give it a rest already. We know! We know!

8. Larry Fitzgerald may be one of the leading Heisman candidates, but his team fails to beat Miami yet again. Hello?

9. Bobby Bowden and Ron Zook, the two head coaches for Florida State and Florida, played last week. Did you notice? Well, Florida State won. Chris Leak looked impressive. Don't be surprised if he wins the Heisman before he's finished at Florida. He's just that good; well except for being on the losing side of this particular game. Such little details, so little time.

10. When Brett Favre is doing bad, John Madden and the rest of the lot have an answer for it. It's always about his thumb. Yep! He hurt his thumb again. That is the same issue with the St. Louis Rams Kurt Warner.

11. ESPN's Chris Berman better find a new team to insult. Using the Cincinnati Bengals as his whipping boys is getting old. As a matter of fact, he can have a whole array of teams to pick on. How about last year's defending Super Bowl Champions?

12. For those of you that watch CBS's NFL show, here's a guide through the language of Deion "Prime Time" Sanders:

"He's a playa playing properly"
(Translation: The guy can really play and play well!)

"He's got his game on"
(Translation: He can play, but not as good as I could)

"He's stylin"
(Translation: He looks alright, but he doesn't look near as good as I do)

"He be bringing the heat"
(Translation: He's not on fire like I was when I was playing)

"Get the in-laws outta my crib"
(Translation: I had in-laws once, but my ex-wife found me cheating and took me to the cleaners. Don't let that happen to you)

Now you are better educated!

13. The Kansas City Chiefs may have the best record in the NFL, but it's the New England Patriots that have kicked it up a notch.

Here's this week's NFL schedule!
Don't forget to have the picks to MoJo2001 by Saturday at midnight!

CONGRATULATIONS

He's this week's Canteen NFL Picks Winner!!!

Oh! We are nearing the end of the NFL Picks. So? We'll have only a few weeks to wait for the winner of the actual prize. As for the other prizes, we were gonna send the NY Giants Cheerleaders to do housework for never4get, but according to Mayor Mike Bloomberg: "We don't have any"! Hmmm......

One more thing!

This weekend is the Army/Navy game!!

So? MoJo would like to say the following:

Beat Army!!!

This week's Canteen Sports Corner was brought to you by:
Lots of Mountain Dew, cold medicine, and nagging from Ma!!

Auntie Fawnn's Perfect Oatmeal Cookies:
Chewy or Crunch -- You Decide
Chewy version pictured on the left!

Humidity and other factors (like the water content of the shortening or butter) can affect baked goods. Perfecting cookies comes with experience. You develop an "eye" about how a perfect batter should look and perform.

The biggest mistake most home bakers make is the way they measure the flour. (Do NOT pack the flour into the measuring cup. That means, do NOT use the cup to scoop out your flour. Use a spoon to scoop the flour and sprinkle it into the cup, then use a knife to level off the cup.)

Okay, now that (part of) my lecture is out of the way, let's get down to the actual recipe stuff:

Many people prefer their oatmeal cookies with raisins. I like chocolate chips. I consider this a versatile chocolate chip cookie recipe with healthy oatmeal.

I like my cookies crunchy and crisp, but my daughter prefers them chewy, so I adapted this recipe so that we could bake them either way using the same recipe. The ratio of brown sugar to cane sugar gives them a subtle butterscotch flavor. If you prefer a stronger butterscotch flavor, reverse the amounts and use 1 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar instead. The cane sugar does help make the cookies crispier though.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup vegetable shortening*
1/4 cup butter**
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup granulated cane sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon real vanilla
1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon sea salt***
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups oatmeal
6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Cream the shortening, butter, sugars, and egg until they get that wonderful yellow color. Add the water and vanilla and process until mixed.
Sift the flour, salt, and soda together and beat into the butter-sugar mixture. Fold in the oatmeal. (Mixture will be stiff.) Mix in the chocolate chips.
Use the "drop" method to make the cookies, spooning out about a tablespoon of batter for each cookie onto a prepared cookie sheet. Leave the cookie mounds rounded for chewier cookies or flatten them slightly with a fork for crunchier cookies.
Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.

Notes:

*Most vegetable shortening (like Crisco) contains unhealthy trans fats. I prefer Spectrum Naturals Organic All Vegetable Shortening.

**Because it's less expensive, I usually use salted butter. (See note below re salt.) Unsalted butter usually has a higher water content than does unsalted butter, and this recipe takes that into consideration. When in doubt, only add about 2 1/2 cups of the oatmeal and then bake a test cookie. Add the remaining 1/2 cup or even more oatmeal, if necessary. (Stick margarine is even higher in water content and therefore it's difficult to predict how it will perform in any recipe. In my experience, Parkay performs best.)

***To my taste, sea salt tastes saltier than does regular table salt, so I can get by with using less. (If you insist on using yucky, metallic-tasting table salt, you may need to use 3/4 teaspoon. I recommend that you start with 1/2 teaspoon, do a test cookie, and then adjust, if necessary.) Crispy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

For crispier cookies, omit the shortening and use all butter.

The cookies will spread out and be flatter if you do so, so take that into consideration when you place the dough on the cookie sheet.

If you add nuts (like pecans or walnuts), decrease the amount of oatmeal by the amount of nut pieces. Otherwise, your cookies will be too dry and crumbly.

To ensure chewier cookies, you can also add an extra egg. (You'll need to increase the amount of oatmeal a bit to compensate.)

Oatmeal Raisin Spice Cookies

For Oatmeal Raisin Spice Cookies, substitute raisins for the chocolate chips. Season by adding 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, and a pinch of nutmeg to the dry ingredients. (Spices are another thing that are subject to taste, so you may want to make a test cookie and then increase the amount of spices accordingly. It's best, of course, to err on the side of caution because you can always add more; it isn't that easy to pick spice pieces out of a cookie batter! Alternatively, if you prefer, you can substitute pumpkin pie spice for the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.)

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Cool Our Troops is a non-profit effort to 'Cool' our troops in Iraq. They are raising funds to send personal misters to 50,000 military personnel serving in Iraq. The misters are portable, no batteries or electricity required, and rely on evaporation to cool surrounding temperatures by 20-30 degrees.

If you ever left a message on an answering machine you can do this!
It's really that simple. AND It's a Toll Free Number !

Send deployed troops message on SoldiersRadio.com

SoldiersRadio is again this year providing a way to let you tell Service members worldwide that you care and are thinking about them during the Holidays.

You can do an Audio Post Card simply by calling 1-800-330-5090.
Your recorded personalized message will be played back on www.SoldiersRadio.com.

You can record a short message (30 seconds) to friends, family members or just a random message of good will. SoldiersRadio will then take your message and put it on the radio Web cast throughout the Holiday Season. Its very simple to do and works both ways ... from the field or to the Service member.

AnyServiceMember.org is also promoting the call-in holiday service in hopes of reaching a large group of people who would like to send a message to Soldiers serving away from home.

The cut-off date for the call in is Dec.15.

Great thread. I love the sports days in the canteen.

I'm hitting the sack. Good night everyone.

Good night troops the world over. Stay safe. Stay warm. Stay dry. Take care of your brothers and sisters. We love you all. Come home to us soon.
