WHO Chief Presses Rich Nations for More AIDS Cash (hand me your wallet)

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - The head of the World Health Organization (news - web sites) on Sunday urged rich nations to provide more money to fight AIDS (news -web sites), which is devastating African nations.

WHO Director General Jong-Wook Lee called on Britain, Japan and Scandinavian nations in particular to donate more money to the organization's global push against the disease, estimated to be killing 8,000 people a day.

"The trend is more money is becoming available, we have to put in more requests and suggestions and pressure to the countries," said Lee, in Brazil for a global health conference.

He said "very urgent action and not the business-as-usual approach" was needed.

Funding to battle HIV (news - web sites)/AIDS has increased from $3.2 billion in 2002 to $4.7 billion but is still less than half the yearly total the United Nations (news - web sites) has called for to fight the epidemic and provide drugs to treat people infected by HIV.

The WHO earlier this month unveiled plans to rush life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) AIDS drugs to 3 million of the world's poor by 2005 and train 10,000 health workers.

Lee said HIV had now infected nearly 40 percent of people in Botswana and half the population would die of AIDS unless urgent action was taken. Life expectancy in Mozambique is expected to fall to 27 years due to the disease.

In 2002 around $1 billion was spent on fighting HIV and AIDS in Africa, which is thought to have nearly 30 million of the 40 million people infected by the disease.

The United States has promised $15 billion over five years to combat AIDS, especially in Africa. It has come under fire for only earmarking $2 billion for the program next year.

Earlier this year, Britain said it would give a global AIDS fund $280 million through to 2008 after initially pledging $200 million for five years in 2001.

"I'm sorry, I didn't realize that not blaming the world AIDS problem on homosexuals (which is really misleading, I suppose you mean those mean ole MALE homosexuals, because it isn't much of an issue with lesbianism) made me a "leftist". I'll say it to you and the others on this board. You ARE simpleminded"

I never said, nor alluded to the conclusions that you have drawn. There are no lines to read between in anything that I have stated in any dialog with you. Any reasonable person knows what I am saying, and I believe that you do as well.

The Aids problem in our country (USA), may not have started within the Homosexual Community in Africa, but it has been, and continues to be predominately spread in this country by the male homosexual community, who were and remain the most vocal for finding a cure. (NOTE) I did not say that they were the only group that is spreading it!

Simpleminded you say? I knew you thought so!

Well, perhaps we are simpleminded, and I "Feel your Pain".
After all, I'm sure that it has been very distressing for you to dialog with a small minded and unlearned individuals such as myself.
You have your opinion and I have mine.

But you have demonstrated on thing for sure: You are a Pro- homosexual "ELITEIST", with a definite left leaning agenda, who enjoys arguing about something that is inarguable.

Ditto. Most of those dying of AIDS in Africa are heterosexuals. Another way it is spread there is via infected needles and medical instruments.

The problem in Africa has been blown way out of proportion.

Here's a recent link on the issue:

Africa isn’t dying of Aids
Additional links on AIDS and Africa:

Anal Sex Largest Cause of HIV in Africa
African Women and AIDS
African sexual health programmes "misguided"

Indeed you are correct, saradippity, some here are ill informed and cannot support some of their statements. And some here claim those who discourage homosexual behavior somehow hate homosexuals, when it fact it's just the opposite.

dougherty is right that needles are another way AIDS is spread in Africa. In fact, needles are the primary reason for the AIDS problem in Africa, with anal sex (heterosexual and homosexual) second.

Fortunately homosexuals have admitted AIDS culpability so perhaps they'll start acting more responsibly, and the best way to do that is abstinence.

You'll find the above links and quite a few others below in regards to the severe health hazards of the homosexual lifestyle.

Thanks for posting the list of AIDS/GRIDS links. I've bookmarked them for future reference.
