Hey, Freepers: I don't know who PhotoShopped that fake "2nd photo" of Kerry and Fonda at the antiwar rally, but you should know that you came within AN EYELASH of causing a huge embarassment.
Thank goodness Raoul made a phone call, so Kristinn just got a call from somebody who is a longtime press friend of FR who was about to go nationwide with the "2nd photo" story. You've got no idea how close this was to being a train wreck.
I am told NewsMax actually got suckered on this.
The same veterans who had circulated the original Fonda-Kerry photo apparently got hold of the PhotoShop fake and didn't know it was a joke. So when these veterans contacted the press Thursday morning claiming to have a second photo -- man! A lot of valuable time was wasted as reporters contacted Associated Press trying to verify the existence of this fake photo.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful with this kind of stuff.

Great ! You post this article and I don't know which pic is fake. Note even a link. Is this the one ?? ...
Kerry: America needs a 'regime change' too
Pretty silly. I scrolled through this article (quickly) and don't find 'THE' discredited article.
How will I recognize it ?

Thanks for posting that. I saw it posted by Registered before and knew it was fake. Now I know the issue of this thread.

See Post #169 for the "FAKED" picture (bet it stays up this time)
(Quite a contingent of DC Freepers on this thread tonight. Thanks for all you do there in the nation's capital. Bravo!!)

I knew that. I enjoy spoofs, sarcasm and all kinds of mind games. Do you know who Audy Murphy was? Do you know that Jane Fonda played in a movie called Barbarella? Actually, W. looks a great deal like Audy did at that age.

I thought it was an obvious fake myself. I guess those who thought it was real never really held a newspaper in their hand and looked at it. :-P

So, whoever passed it to the press is in the wrong! I agree, besides I could swear that I saw that pic on a post a few days ago with credit given to Registered. I think someone was looking for 15 minits and got suckered. Don't blame Registered for the speedy fingers of someone who didn't bother to check the photo.

Well, a picture with the word "FAKED" through it would be pretty definitive for me. Pass the word on to her; she'll appreciate it.

Is this the picture? If so, it's my creation. The light is wrong on Kerry's face - this is east to spot; contrast that with the sunlight and the shadows on Fonda; contrast this with the diffused light on Kerry's face.
(I'm surprised that to many people don't 'catch' this right away ...)

I thought it was an obvious fake myself. I guess those who thought it was real never really held a newspaper in their hand and looked at it. :-PWere you on the thread when the bogus pic was initially posted? I was. Thank God for an honest FReeper who exposed the pic as being a fraud, or a so-called "parody" very quickly. It certainly WAS NOT presented as such when posted.
Kind of reminds me of dialog from one of my favorite movies.
Chili Palmer: Martin, look at me.
Martin Weir: I'm looking at you!
Chili Palmer: No, look at me the way I'm looking at you.
Congrats, Registered. Not sure what your agenda is, but you're obviously very good at promoting it.

Thanks for the kind words, CD.
I offer this comment, speaking as a "newbie" in the DC Chapter: Over five-plus years of DC Chapter history, the founding members of the chapter have been sticklers for truth, accuracy and peaceful (but fun-filled) activism; and with that they have earned a lot of trust and goodwill with certain members of the media.
A good reputation is priceless in this town; sometimes it takes a lot of work to keep that rep spotless. Thank goodness that Doctor Raoul and Kristinn were on-the-ball with this, and were able to mitigate the damage that could have been done. Madstrider's absolutely correct, we did come within and eyelash of causing a huge embarrassment - in a lot of places.
I will agree wholeheartedly that it's a lot of fun to play with photos and taunt our political foes with blatantly obvious fakes; but we have to play safely - meaning that faked/PhotoShopped photos should have some kind of marking on them identifying them as such, for folks who may not be familiar with our senses of humor.
Let's all be careful out there, folks.
:-)

I feel stupid. I can't see a way to get the link to that picture (post 169)
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1076946/posts?page=179#169 to her through her site. I don't see an "email me" or anything there, and though there's obviously a way to post comments, I can't figure it out. I have some visual field problems that often interfere with stuff like that.
To: LisaMalia; Registered
Don't be so quick to assume malice of any kind. It's an irresistable challenge to make a Photoshopped image that good and that believable. That one is about perfect. (Under trees, lighting IS irregular--that actually makes this more believable, not less.)
Hindsight is 20/20, you know. Registered has done some absolutely super stuff over the years.
To: LisaMalia
Hint 1: Photos from newsprint have clearly visible dots, especially newspapers from the 70's.
Hint 2: The caption "John Kerry (LEFT)" *funny*
Hint 3: Registered posted it. Has he ever posted a picture that wasn't a parody or faked?
To: John H K
There ALSO is a fake pic of Kerry in front of a North Vietnamese flag. People have been using it as if it were real; Vietnam Vets against Kerry or whatever created it and have a link explaining they made it and it's not "real", but it's still an UNBELIEVABLY dumb thing to do. The "Vietnam Veterans Against John Kerry" website has that photo, but it's next to a link in big type that says something like "ABOUT THIS PHOTO" where the Vets show how that "photo" was made. "Composite" is a better word. Funny, they made one, but they got fooled by one and sent it out to the press. It was only up for a short time on FR too.

Some people here have been known to freak out here over editorials that are painfully obvious and very witty satires. It's amusing. Should a news agency choose to run with a photo or satire produced or posted on FR then it's their own damn fault, not the artist's or satirist's fault. ;-)

Look at the angle of the light striking the papers held by JK and compare with the light on Hanoi Jane's face.

The first thing I noticed in the bogus photo of Fing K on stage with the Commie Fonda, was that the Kerry pose was one of someone in a sitting position, not someone standing. Actually, that's Kerry in the original photo. It was "Hanoi Jane" that was dropped in.
