It's a matter of FR's legal warchest vs. that of Big Liberal Media. Either some eccentric billionaire endows FR to take this clear to the Supreme Court or it will become an emasculated shadow of its old self.

Are other news commentary sites, such as DU, LP, L.com, etc. having to comply with these same restrictions?

Well, I guess we will have to trust you to summarize, since I am not going to their links.
This includes the major Indiana paper, the Indianapolis Star, which means I will have to summarize stories on the Mitch Daniels campaign. Bah!

Well, I just visited the Battle Creek Enquirer website for the last time. It's a rag that I quit paying to read a long time ago.
I will no longer give them a click, either.
Ironically, I posted an article from them a couple of days ago - just a sweet local-interest piece about some kids visiting Air Force One.

I emailed a large Midwest newspaper about a particular Left-wing website which posts full-text articles from their rag. I pointed out that their copyright policy (which of course they have fully enforced against us) forbade such activity, and provided 3 specific links from within the last month.
The upper level contact emailed me back that preventing such activity was very difficult, and would probably take almost a year to correct.
His email was clearly a lie.
I say we start Freeping the Net to shut down ANY other site which engages in activity which is forbidden here. Let's see the media liars go up against their own illegitimate spawn.

Google just went public so I believe they have enough money to create their own contractual agreement with these publications.

Lawyers have to have something to do to justify their paycheck.
It's time to think "out of the box" to save FR from morphing into a shell of links.

I wonder if they sent the same kind of letters to DU, or Bartcop, or smirking chimp, etc. See my post #49 about smirky. Anybody who believes there's free speech in this country is dreaming.
And the Left is jumping up and down about the Patriot Act. Puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeze!

Jim Rob pointed out that even if we have right and the law on our side, they still would drag him into court and the most likely path would be for this end up in the US Supreme Court. Going to court would become a full time job, something I wouldn't want.
IMHO, the web is dying, and manure like this is helping. My prediction is that these policies will hurt these sites and their tune will change, but only after November 2.

The inability to post excerpts is simply bizarre.
The press now reserves to itself the right to publish stolen material, classified material, and clearly false material, while threatening to use the legal system to bankrupt anyone who cites them.
They might even get away with it.

PC Magazine and it's subsidiaries are no longer allowing us to post their articles. Since then, I have cancelled all of the emailings I subscribed to of theirs, and will not renew my subscription. In fact, I will be sure to let them know why I will not renew when I get the renewal notice. There are PLENTY of other computer mags that I can subscribe to.
