Kerry citation a 'total mystery' to ex-Navy chief

August 28, 2004

BY THOMAS LIPSCOMB

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.

"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.

The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."

Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.

Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

I don't think he'll be able to avoid signing the Form 180...

OTOH, if releasing the records would be so damning that he'd have not one shred of loincloth to hide behind, he'll stick with his current course and try to bluff his way through midnight on November 2, even if he knows he's going to lose.

LOL. Thank you. You just made my night. This place is awesome, and I try to do my best to add to it. My "skills" (analytical critic) would be worthless without input from others. You, and AFPhys, and been_lurking (and others) have been appropriately firm, yet polite, in providing facts and personal experience to rebut my speculation.

It's good to know that freedom won't go away with a whimper, at least not in my lifetime.

Close analysis revealed Rood supported the what the Swift Vets were saying although he took the position that he was coming out in defense of Kerry.

I'd have to reread the article for some details. Rood definitely came out under pressure from Kerry. IIRC, he didn't say he supported Kerry in total, but did agree with one of Kerry's Silver Star versions regarding the single VC. His primary justification for talking was to get his version on the record, let the chips fall where they may.

A few people guessed, without reading the article, that Rood's recollection and story would not contradict Elliott's problem with the Silver Star citation. My only point being, "close analysis" was done before Rood came out. And still, the media has not identified and expressed the relevant points of contention regarding the Silver Star.

This bodes positive for extended media attention.

The libs are not giving an inch and will never believe the reality. This is a battle for the moderates, independents and Nam Vets who may have voted Rat for various reasons.

Liberals are by definition living in a fantasy world (Utopia on Earth courtesy of the State) and thus will NEVER, EVER let facts dissuade them from their preconceived opinions. The battle is of course for the mushy middle ground, as it has always been.

Something is being covered up. Their spokesmen even lie in trying to claim all his records are out.

Heard Hume on FOX this am questioning a Kerry campaign hack about releasing all the records. The guy kept saying all the records were on the (Kerry) web site. When Hume aked about the 100 or so reportedly unreleased documents, the quisling responded: "There are over 100 documents posted on the web site" -- One of the most sophomoric lying cover-ups I have ever heard. There is no way these pukes should be allowed to get away with this.
