Raw Data: Excerpts of Bush Speech

"I am running for president with a clear and positive plan to build a safer world and a more hopeful America. I am running with a compassionate conservative philosophy: that government should help people improve their lives, not try to run their lives. I believe this nation wants steady, consistent, principled leadership and that is why, with your help, we will win this election."

"So we have fought the terrorists across the earth not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake. Our strategy is clear. We have tripled our funding for homeland security and trained half a million first responders, because we are determined to protect our homeland. We are transforming our military and reforming and strengthening our intelligence services. We are staying on the offensive, striking terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home. And we are working to advance liberty in the broader Middle East, because freedom will bring a future of hope and the peace we all want. And we will prevail."

"This moment in the life of our country will be remembered. Generations will know if we kept our faith and kept our word. Generations will know if we seized this moment and used it to build a future of safety and peace. The freedom of many, and the future security of our nation, now depend on us."

Well, it sounds good except for the part about gov't helping people improve their lives. Oh well. I believe his heart is in the right place, but he just has more faith in gov't than I've got.

Isn't the speech supposed to be embargoed?

Bond market reacted as if job numbers tomorrow will be larger than expected. Eveyone is watching Bush's speech for clues of this...since he already knows the number! If Bush mentions "strong growth ahead" or something in his speech watch the dollar and bonds on Globex for wild moves.

I dont think they want it embargoes, it gives the press a chance to nitpick and the give the Bush team to make quiet corrections. Plus if people read it or hear about it in part, they may be more eager to view in and watch it in its entirety.

Somewhere there is a disconnect between a compassionate conservative willing to take away from John to give to Tom. In former years that was called communism. Now if John wishes to take his money he has left over from his huge tax burden and give it to Tom, that is charity. Charity is a virtue and should be encouraged. Forcibly coercing and taking from John to give to Tom is tyranny and should be discouraged. It's a long way back to freedom so you should start early and pack a lunch.

President Bush must boost support for the War in Iraq. He needs to restore voters' confidence in his strategy to win the peace in Iraq. Experts predict, God forbid, that the death toll from the Iraq War will surpass 1,000 before the elections. Additionally, terrorists will probably intensify their destabilizing efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan before the elections, attempting to copy Al-Qaeda's success in Spain.

Bush should reiterate America's commitment to building a peaceful, democratic Iraq. He should list America's ongoing objectives and explain at what point (accomplishment not calendar based) our troops will begin to exit Iraq.

Kerry has capitalized on people's concerns over Iraq. Bush has to step up and reassure people that we will win in Iraq. He must go beyond justifying the war. He has to emphasize the importance of winning the war and convince naysayers that the Bush Administration has a strong plan to win the peace.

The Iraq war will be the focal issue in the campaign. Bush has won points painting Kerry as an indecisive flip-flopper. But the election is a referendum on Bush's actions, therefore Bush must convince voter's that he has a successful strategy for stabilizing Iraq.

President Bush should say for example,
Forces will exit Iraq once:
-Elections have been held
-Iraqi forces ably-trained
-Basic infrastructure (oil, water, electricity, etc.) secured
-Iraqi government proves ready to defend and run Iraq
and says US troops not needed.

What do y'all think? I'm just worried that Kerry will seize and capitalize on any pre-election Iraq/Afghanistan turmoil as a reason to fire Bush. I might be over-worrying, but remember what happened in Spain. I'm just suspicious Kerry will shamelessly exploit any increased Iraqi/Afghan violence to his own political advantage.

and the give the Bush team to make quiet corrections.

I disagree. They should already know what the press will say, they shouldn't care what the press will say, and they aren't changing it two hours before he gives it.
