ATTN KERRY CAMPAIGN : Edwards COULD have served during Vietnam BUT didn't.

"Kerry continued the assault Friday at a rally in Newark, Ohio, slamming Cheney for avoiding military service during Vietnam.
He told the crowd, "I'll let you and the American people decide whether five deferments makes you more 'unfit' than two tours of duty."

John Edwards COULD have served during Vietnam BUT didn't.

Instead he went to college from '70-'74

"...A proud product of public schools, John became the first person in his family to attend college. He worked his way through North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974, and then earned a law degree with honors in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. .."

Sounds like the basis of just a gentle letter-FREEP to every newspaper editor asking whay Edwards didn't volunteer for the military and why he didn't even enroll in the ROTC. Inquiring minds want to know since they are hammering Cheney

Vietnam or not, Edwards still could have volunteered to serve in the military.

Kerry is such an arrogant putz. Does he not even see how wide open he is on this issue? Oh, that's right, he sees it but how dare anyone point it out. He won't allow it.

Kerry--- I guess the best way to know him is to look at the friends he has kept and keeps, right?

The DOD has no record of Al Hubbard having ever being in Vietnam.

And he was a Sgt, NOT a Captain

And there is no record of a combat injury

Excellent point, Edweirds needs to be challenged at every whistle stop by vets asking him why he didn't serve.

Then Kerry needs to be hammered with this as well as McNasty in the DNC.

Cheney- born 1/31/1940

Kerry - born 12/11/1943

-------

Yep .. he was older then Kerry when the lottery started

BTW .. didn't the draft go into affect around WWII??

And if so .. wouldn't that make Kerry a draft dodger for going to college?

"FOR THE RECORD: Questions of Service"
The military service or draft status of the Democratic presidential candidates during the Vietnam era:

Served in Vietnam

Wesley K. Clark, 58 After West Point, Oxford and Army training, served in the First Infantry Division in Vietnam from May 1969 to February 1970. Won a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

John Kerry, 59 While still at Yale, enlisted in the Navy in 1966, and served two tours in Vietnam, winning three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. He returned to become an outspoken opponent of the war.

Served in the National Guard or received student deferments

Richard A. Gephardt, 62 Joined the Missouri Air National Guard after his student deferment lapsed in 1965. Became a lawyer in the judge advocate's office and stayed in the National Guard until 1971.

Joseph I. Lieberman, 61 Received student deferments from 1961 through 1967 while at Yale and Yale Law School. After finishing law school, received a parental deferment with his wife pregnant.

Received medical deferments

Howard Dean, 55 While a senior at Yale in 1970, told authorities of a back condition, spondylolysis, and received a medical deferment. His draft lottery number was 143, meaning he would have been likely to be drafted, according to the Selective Service.

Dennis J. Kucinich, 57 Was declared ineligible for the draft because of a heart murmur found during a high school physical for the football team. He applied for the exemption when he got his draft card.

Draft ending as they became eligible

John Edwards, 50 Received a relatively high number in the draft lottery when he became eligible in 1972. The draft ended before he was called up.

Al Sharpton, 49 Was eligible in the 1972 lottery, when his number was 103, a relatively safe number since even in the previous year, the draft reached only as high as the number 95.

Ineligible

Carol Moseley Braun was not eligible for the draft because she is a woman

Just curious, but Cheney was 27-28 during the escalation in Vietnam, wasn't there an age limit on draftees? He seems a bit old to be drafted.

Thanks for posting the link. This was "my" lottery also. Didn't even have to look at the chart to recall what my number was, I've never forgotten waiting to hear it announced on the radio. All my buddies and I were gathered together to see if any of us would be called. Anyone with a number higher than 16 was reclassified from 1-A to 1-H, literally overnight. This meant our chances of being drafted were nil.

This all took place in Massachusetts and the political climate was such that few young men were enlisting. Kerry can claim credit that his actions had much to do with the attitudes that were then prevalent, at least in New England.

This entire thread and particulary your post brings back alot of memories.

Regards

Edwards is 51 years old. That would make him born in 53, or 21 yrs old at the end of the war. He could have served.

Birth date: June 10, 1953
Education: Bachelor’s degree, North Carolina State University, 1974; law degree, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1977
Career: Lawyer in private practice 1977–1997 representing families and children hurt by negligence and indifference. Battled large corporations and the powerful insurance industry.
Elected office: U.S. Senate, 1999–present
Accomplishments in Senate: Co-authored Patients’ Bill of Rights that passed Senate in 2001; fought for middle-class tax cuts for working families and opposed Bush tax cuts for the wealthy; voted to protect workers’ rights to overtime pay; worked to improve schools, fully fund the No Child Left Behind Act, expand after school programs and improve teacher pay; opposed Bush administration radical judicial appointments; fought to strengthen Social Security and Medicare; voted to protect Buy American requirements for the U.S. Defense Department. Edwards serves on four committees: Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Intelligence; Judiciary; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Family: Wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Catharine and Emma Claire; son Jack. Their first child Wade, 16, was killed in a car accident in 1996.

Check out VVAW and Anti-Imprialist and go to their guy in Europe. He is the one you see leading a lot of demonstrations in Europe. His name is Darnell Summers and he spent his Vietnam Tour in Long Binh Jail. We was part of this Black Panthers group. He always likes to sign his name SP4 Darnell Summers USArmy 1966 to 1970. He really hates it when you point out he only made SP4 in four years when Elvis Prestly made E5 in only two years. If you got time to waste some time contacting this guy, try it out, it is a lot of fun.

I could be wrong .. but I believe the cut off age was 26 yrs of age when the lottery went into effect

At that time Cheney was 27, married with a child .. and would not have been drafted

Kerry was 23/24 yrs old and not married at the time

From Edwards' bio (see link above):

...As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards has worked tirelessly for a strong national defense and to strengthen the security of our homeland. He has authored key pieces of legislation on cyber, bio, and port security...

I wonder if his attendance & voting record were as good as Kerry's, whose attendance was 24%.
