CBS'S BIG BLUNDER? (Credits Free Republic)

September 10, 2004 -- THE populist revolu tion against the so- called mainstream media continues. Yesterday, the citizen journalists who produce blogs on the Internet — and their engaged readers — engaged in the wholesale exposure of what appears to be a presidential-year dirty trick against George W. Bush. What the bloggers and their audiences did was call into profound question the authenticity of four documents proudly trumpeted by CBS News in a much-heralded investigative report on Wednesday night's edition of "60 Minutes" about the president's National Guard service in the early 1970s.

These were "previously unseen documents . . . obtained by '60 Minutes,' " the network bragged Wednesday night on its Web site. Their author, supposedly, was Bush's squadron commander, Jerry Killian, who died 20 years ago.

They "include a memorandum from May 1972," CBS reports, "where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about 'how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November.' " A document dated "18 August 1973" complains that Killian is being asked to "sugar coat" Bush's record. "I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job," the document says.

Liberals went wild with glee about the story, especially after the onslaught on John Kerry's Vietnam record by his fellow Swift-boat veterans.

Kevin Drum, the most talented of the left-wing bloggers, wrote: "This story is a perfect demonstration of the difference between the Swift-boat controversy and the National Guard controversy. Both are tales from long ago and both are related to Vietnam, but . . . in the National Guard case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence provides additional confirmation that the charges against Bush are true."

[snip]The Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site, the 47th posting on the topic there. Post No. 47 pointed out that there was something off about these documents from the 1970s: The spacing between the letters and the words was proportional, and only a few IBM electric typewriters could achieve that effect back then.

FreeRepublic credited with starting Memogate!!!

Lest we forget the honorable Sandy Berg(l)er, the light-fingered Democrat, this would be Memogate II.

RE: your #116 - "If you all click on Buckhead page then on "in Forum" its a good read where you can watch it all unfold from Buckhead's perspective.

Exciting."

Yes - it has been amazing, beyond belief. I've been grinning so much the back of my head hurts. But I insist this would have been exposed without me. It's the New Media Rules. FR Rocks and Rules, and many thousands made this happen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Howlin WE NEED TO SEE THOSE MEMOS AGAIN! They are not in the style that we used when I came in to the USAF. They looked like the style and format we started using about 12 years ago (1992). Our signature blocks were left justified, now they are rigth of center...like the ones they just showed. Can we get a copy of those memos? 107 posted on 09/08/2004 8:19:00 PM EDT by TankerKC (R.I.P. Spc Trevor A. Win'E American Hero)

That blogger must be following a different Swift-boat controversy. The one I've been following in considerable detail ALL points to problems with Kerry's stories (and I mean that in plural -- he's had several versions).

The difference between discovering these memos are fake and what I posted on 9/11 was that freepers have researched typewriters & have evidence that the memos were faked. I had no evidence that bin Laden was behind 9/11 that morning. I had a gut instinct that it was that animal that murdered 3000, but it took a while before we had evidence.

I told my sweetie the same thing last night, but I was having a hard time making him understand why it had to be someone young who did this.

He finally understood that the person who did this likely has no experience using a typewriter, and probably has only ever used a word processor. When I explained the superscript "th" and how Word autocorrects it (and showed him on my own computer), I swear you could see the light bulb come on over his head.

This victory justly has thousands of fathers, and would have been won without any particular individual contribution because of the New Media swarm. The New Media Rules. FR Rocks. Thanks very much to you, Howlin, TankerKC, and the many, many, many Freepers who busted CBS.

My first reaction to this today was that it would take a long time to actually go anywhere. That is what I am used to. I am glad I was wrong. I am amazed at how quickly this has gone from FR to the mainstream media.

I guess all it shows is that sharks will always be attracted to blood and thrashing in the water, even if it's not from their usual prey.

I just checked the DUmmies website (Oh, forgive me). They are in a fit over this story! They are yapping about a Selectric typewriter that existed back then that "could" have been used.

The thing could have beeen typeset on a Linotype machine too, but there's "could have" and "likely". They are grasping at straws. The Selectric explanation only carries so far. It doesn't explain the perfect match of spacing with a Word document. That simply is not likely to happen in the world of type, and they know it.
