CBS'S BIG BLUNDER? (Credits Free Republic)

September 10, 2004 -- THE populist revolu tion against the so- called mainstream media continues. Yesterday, the citizen journalists who produce blogs on the Internet — and their engaged readers — engaged in the wholesale exposure of what appears to be a presidential-year dirty trick against George W. Bush. What the bloggers and their audiences did was call into profound question the authenticity of four documents proudly trumpeted by CBS News in a much-heralded investigative report on Wednesday night's edition of "60 Minutes" about the president's National Guard service in the early 1970s.

These were "previously unseen documents . . . obtained by '60 Minutes,' " the network bragged Wednesday night on its Web site. Their author, supposedly, was Bush's squadron commander, Jerry Killian, who died 20 years ago.

They "include a memorandum from May 1972," CBS reports, "where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about 'how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November.' " A document dated "18 August 1973" complains that Killian is being asked to "sugar coat" Bush's record. "I'm having trouble running interference and doing my job," the document says.

Liberals went wild with glee about the story, especially after the onslaught on John Kerry's Vietnam record by his fellow Swift-boat veterans.

Kevin Drum, the most talented of the left-wing bloggers, wrote: "This story is a perfect demonstration of the difference between the Swift-boat controversy and the National Guard controversy. Both are tales from long ago and both are related to Vietnam, but . . . in the National Guard case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence provides additional confirmation that the charges against Bush are true."

[snip]The Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site, the 47th posting on the topic there. Post No. 47 pointed out that there was something off about these documents from the 1970s: The spacing between the letters and the words was proportional, and only a few IBM electric typewriters could achieve that effect back then.

This attempt is just the TIP OF THE ICE BERG.

MORE WILL COME!

The next ones will not have such primitive mistakes. Democrats see that they many not survive a loss in this election. For them it is literally do anything or die as a political party.

With a loss, so go their donors, their money, their influence abroad. Teddy Kennedy still uses his political push outside the usa, how will it work if there is on "influence" to peddle?

WE HAVE TO FIGHT LIKE WE ARE 10 POINTS DOWN.

no prisoners,
never give up
never surrender
until the rats are in the garbage heap.

Or as Tereza calls us--"the common man". LOL
Good job freepers. I was following that thread yesterday and the way it exploded was beautiful! CBS=Can't Believe S$#t
Bottom line is when we stay conscientious out in this big "free republic" of ours, things get done and the left can't run roughshod on our country. Let's keep their feet to the fire. This is the way we will dismantle the stranglehold they've had on not only the media, but academics too.

The thing is Blather and the other lieberal media PTB can't believe people aren't just buying their propaganda anymore.

The internet has changed the world, we no longer need them as a news source - people are too sophisticated now too.

I really hope this is the end of Blather's tour of duty on that sinking CBS ship.

Good Job to all the freepers that pursued this - putting those lying liberals-especially in the media -- back in their place!

I've read through the entire thread. This is without a doubt a great effort and illustrates the power of FR.

It also shows that FR is 24/7: 365.

FReepers have been at it allnite long. Great job guys.

Do the 'Liberal' bumper stickers say "Liberals The other white heat"? Forgive me for being ignorant, but what does that mean?

It's particularly appropriate now, as the liberals are screaming like "stuck pigs". *evil grin*

There's a larger story here. Blogs and Internet news sources have long been criticized by the mainstream media as unreliable. However, in their arrogance borne of monopoly power over news, the MSM never allowed effective criticism and usually avoided making corrections comparable to the original error, if at all.

Thus, the new web media has vast advantages over its competition in terms of timeliness, public scrutiny, and flexibility to make changes. As a democratized forum which encourages dialogue, it has become the more reliable news source, while also meritorious for its convenience, efficiency, reach, cost and diversity of subjects and ideas.

What boggles the mind is how many other stories 60 Minutes and other MSM programs relied on forged documents or deceived viewers based on unvetted or poorly vetted materials in order to promote a point of view or political candidacy. Topically, some of that deception extends right back to the stories coming out of Vietnam, about how we were losing the war militarily -- which turned out to be a Big Lie orchestrated by the liberal monopoly networks of CBS, NBC and ABC. Thank goodness things have changed.

Democrat denial runs deep. They are busy with one conspiracy theory and another, desperately treading water without a life jacket. Going down, down, down.

They are still in denial. They have resorted to calling Jerry's widowed wife a B*tch,

and the experts are now "so called experts".

By now, I think DUhs are in the 'anger stage.' Soon they will have to accept the truth. Heheheee..
