An overwhelming majority of voters believe it was wrong for Democratic nominee John F. Kerry to have mentioned in Wednesday's presidential debate that Vice President Cheney's daughter was a lesbian, according to the latest Washington Post tracking survey.
Nearly two in three likely voters -- 64 percent -- said Kerry's comment was "inappropriate," including more than four in 10 of his own supporters and half of all swing voters. A third -- 33 percent -- thought the remark was appropriate.

It was quite obvious that both Kerrys and Edwards references to Mary Cheney in their respective debates were planned in advance and part of a strategy to accomplish something. WHAT WERE KERRY AND EDWARDS HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH BY REFERRING TO MARY CHENEY BEING A LESBIAN?
Dracula has seen the light while he melts.
As bad as Kerry's using Mary Cheney was I still think Elizabeth Edwards comment was more hurtful. How can a mother say that another mother is ashamed of their child? That was the lowest comment I have heard. It sounded like something DU would have posted.
And this from the liberal Washington Compost. Very fine job, Mr. Kerry. Keep up the good work, sir!
Can you say Wellstone funeral? Dems have done it again.
Bump.
I don't get it. Why is it sleazy? She is gay. Everyone knows that, it is no big deal.
When Kerry said that during the debate...I rose up slowly from the couch and a feeling in my gut went..."GAME OVER"!
I called my parents moments later and said mark my words...you just saw the turning point in this election....
Not only that, the Kerry campaign, immediately after the debate, said Cheney's daughter was "fair game." They didn't even try to spin it as Kerry's deep understanding or sympathy with the gay community, they called it fair game. (Which means it's okay to hunt, ridicule, attack, etc.)
She is a lesbian! Everyone knows it. Why is this a big deal?
These people Kerry, his wife, Edwards, his wife are the scum of the universe. Just like Bill Clinton has gotten his justice from the Lord with his bypass, that has changed him forever, the Lord will take care of these low life vermin.
By having both the "Johns" hammer this issue, their focus groups must have told them that A. The "Gays" will forgive, forget, and move on. B. The Christian Right will stay home.
Tells me they don't know Christ went to the cross for all of us.
It's so ironic that it is happening this way.
All of the horrible stuff about Kerry (his viciousness, his hypocracy, his smearing of all Vietnam veterans, his lies about his war record, his inactivity in the Senate, and on and on and on) have relatively little impact on most voters. One mean comment resonates with the public and, I hope, becomes the tipping point that causes large numbers of voters to break faith with their candidate.
Why didn't people get disgusted with him long ago? Is the public at fault? Is the media coverup so effective?
I'm completely perplexed at the randomness of all of this.
They think they are going to scare the religious right into not voting for Bush Cheney.

I remember reading about Harry Truman wanting to kick a critic in his cojones for the review he'd done of Truman's daughter's piano playing. The critic wrote some nasty things about Margaret's piano playing. Compare that to today's sickness of repeatedly bringing up Ms. Cheney's sexual orientation. Does anyone believe that wasn't thought out for political advantage? This was a calculated move. This was a cheap shot. Think, too, about some of the Kerry issues - taxes, military record, and others, - have been treated as off limits and are still not open to the public! Clinton's sex life, according to liberals, was off limits, but Ms. Cheney's sexual preference is important enough to bring up twice in the two debates by the Democrats.
At least she's not like John Kerry, who sleeps with a cow.
This was either:
1. A thinly veiled and poorly executed attack on Dick Cheney (for being a bad father who won't talk about his gay daughter and won't fight for her rights); or
2. An attempt to evade the gay marriage issue and avoid a direct debate on it, by sending the message to the Bush campaign that they will drag Mary Cheney's name into it every time the Bush camp tries to engage on gay marriage.
I think it was the former. Bill Kristol thinks it was the latter. But most people think it was an even worse reason, to try to get that oh-so-huge anti-gay bigot vote to stay home and not vote for Bush.
But the survey also suggests that Kerry continues to claim a large lead in key battleground states. In these 13 states, Kerry held a 53 percent to 43 percent advantage among likely voters.
Anyone ever hear of this poll? Kerry holds a 53/46 lead??? More lies from the Kerry kool-aid drinker.
'As bad as Kerry's using Mary Cheney was I still think Elizabeth Edwards comment was more hurtful'
she is a despicable human being. you would think that with her personal tragedies she could be a little more compassionate and sensitive towards another woman/family/.
no one can stand her; her rushing up to the stage to confront VP Cheney that 'yes he HAD already met her husband'..how transparent and stupidly shallow - like a little league mom yelling at the coach to play her kid...
plus, she is NOT easy to look at; now that we can't even say "well, maybe she's a nice person",...there's no reason to have anything to do with her.
consider her shunned. she deserves it.
