What Happened To The Rare Tribes (Tsunami)

What happened to the rare tribes?

SANJAY DUTTA & CHANDRIKA MAGO

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2004 11:19:06 PM

NEW DELHI: An enormous anthropological disaster is in the making. The killer tsunami is feared to have wiped out entire tribes — already threatened by their precariously small numbers — perhaps rendering them extinct and snapping the slender tie with a lost generation.

Officials involved in rescue operations are pessimistic, but still keeping their fingers crossed for the Sentinelese and Nicobarese, the two tribes seen as bearing the brunt of the killer wave.

The bigger fear is for the Sentinelese, anthropologically the most important tribe, living on the flat North Sentinel Island. Putting their population at about 100, officials say no body count is possible as the tribe had remained isolated. The Nicobarese, numbering about 25,000, are also feared to have suffered major losses, if not near -extinction. Clustered in 12 villages along the coast of Car Nicobar, the worst affected, it is feared nearly half of them could have been engulfed by the giant wave.

Then there are the Chowra and Teresa islands, mostly inhabited by the Nicobarese. Chowra has reported 38 deaths from a total population of 1,500. Here, too, the picture is hazy. The Onges, living on the Little Andaman island, are expected to fare a little better. So far, 14 deaths have been reported from the island. Some of these would be Onges. To begin with, they just number a 100.

The Shompens, Great Andamanese and Jarawas are expected to have fared better as they live on comparatively higher grounds. But their small number could be working against them.

If you are referring to the cooking pots in Arizona, those were owned by the Aztecs who had moved up to the area. They were cooking the ancestors ~ they weren't the ancestors themselves!

Aztec cannibalism was not unknown.

I was once banned from a school for pointing out Aztec "peculiarities."

60K+ people have died, and they are worried about a handful of stone aged cannibals?

Let's hope that you didn't "point out" those peculiarities in a live demonstration in front of the class. Such events are frowned on!

Thanks for the clarification. I was always under the impression they were Anasazi pots, used to cook neighbors, rather then visitors' pots used to cook Anasazi.

In any case, I much prefer to go to Grandma's for holiday dinners, than to have Grandma for dinner.

Oh, you can find live cannibals even on Borneo, the Dayaks show up every couple years and eat their Madurese neighbors, frying up their faces and arms and hands in local marketplaces, and motorcycling their heads around on pikes in the tract housing developments.

Nominally, these Dayaks are Christian, but it's tough on them and in the end, they always backslide into the old ways every couple years. You can take the Christian out of the cannibal but you can't take the cannibal out of the Christian.

"That's where Krakatoa is located! One explosion possibly brought about the Dark Ages in 538 AD."

Professor Mike Baillie believes it was a comet fragment(s) that brought on the Dark Ages.

That sounds like cannibals to me. They're cannibals. No liberal excuse-making and naysaying is going to change my mind about this. They ate some British tourists and that's all I need to know about whether I like them or not. They eat people! They're cannibals!

I don't know the details but, I must correct your statement in the name of Christ. There is no more cannibal left in the Christian but, there may well be cannibals amongst the Christians.

next winter, the carribbean and south florida will be loaded with euros on vacation.

They already are doing that now, thanks to the high value of the Euro currency. Europeans are flocking to resorts in Florida in record numbers because they realize their currency can go a long way here in the USA.

NOT meant that way!!! I honestly did wonder about them being made extinct by this because they've always intrigued me, but I wasn't aware of the rare tribes. I am very sad about the horrendous loss of life, human and otherwise, and I'm sorry you thought I meant otherwise.
