AP Interview: Gingrich Criticizes Bush, Open to Presidential Run By Ron Fournier The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - Newt Gingrich is taking steps toward a potential presidential bid in 2008 with a book criticizing President Bush's policies on Iraq and a tour of early campaign states.
The former House speaker who led Republicans to power a decade ago said he soon will visit Iowa and New Hampshire to promote his book, try to influence public policy and keep his political options alive.
"Anything seems possible," including a White House race, Gingrich told The Associated Press.
The quotable and controversial former Georgia congressman, who now runs a consulting firm in Washington, is promoting, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America." He seemed to welcome the thought that a book tour will increase speculation about his political aspirations.
"It never hurts to maximize opportunities. That's the American tradition," Gingrich said. "If I can influence the reporters and political activists in Iowa and New Hampshire, they will influence the candidates."
Asked if he might be a candidate himself, Gingrich said. "For an Army brat from Pennsylvania who became the only Georgia Republican in the House and the first Republican Speaker of the House in 40 years, anything seems possible. I don't think it's very likely. On the other hand, if I have an impact on public policy and do it in a way that is exciting and positive, why wouldn't I want to do that?"

Mr. Speaker has no national constiuency. He also left DC in a less than desirable way (even though it was the fault of the MSM.) We need a new candidate who will NOT be afraid to wallop Hillary Von Rodham and say to all American that she is a Socialist Elitist Zealot with no redeeming social qualities whatsoever.
ARe you kidding me? I appreciate Gingrich and all, but he's so 1990's. Maybe Caspar Weinberger can announce his candidacy next.
Newt, your time has come and gone. You were smart, but you didn't have the moral qualifications to be a leader. The media only pays attention to you when it hurts the president or the image of the party, so find a nice teaching job somewhere and shut up.
Gingrich was always the most intelligent politician in my view. He seems to gave fell into the "me" syndrome over the past few years.
Et tu, Newt? He allowed himself to be slimed by Clinton & Co. during the 95 budget battles without answering, and the left will never give him a chance no matter how much he trashes Bush.

In which case, Governor Sanford is an attractive candidate. He has proven himself to be trustworthy and able in his service to the people of South Carolina (he actually cut the state budget, and served only as many terms as he said he would when he was a Representative). Hillary will look like a retread in comparison: she is already an old bag, Republicans merely need to show a fresh face to highlight it.

Good! I cannot think of another electable Republican anyhow.
I could support Newt enthusiastically. He has an historian's view of the issues faced by the nation; he is conservative in outlook; and he has proven mass communication/leadership skills. Electability is the biggest question he would have to face. He would need to deal with morals questions from the right, and executive experience questions from the middle (Americans generally elect governors or VPs to the Presidency). The left would froth at the mouth--always an entertaining spectacle.
