ZOT! U.S.: IRA must disband now
Reuters ^ | Wednesday, March 9, 2005

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (Reuters) -- The United States has demanded that the IRA disband after the guerrilla group's astonishing offer to shoot the killers of a murdered Northern Ireland Catholic man. "It's time for the IRA to go out of business," U.S. special envoy Mitchell Reiss said Wednesday. For the IRA's political ally Sinn Fein, Northern Ireland's biggest Irish nationalist party, the U.S. demand was yet another blow to its democratic credentials. Reiss told BBC radio: "It's time for Sinn Fein to be able to say explicitly, without ambiguity, without ambivalence, that criminality will not be tolerated. "You can't sign up for the rule of law a la carte." The IRA's offer -- also condemned by London and Dublin -- handed fresh ammunition to Protestant rivals who say Sinn Fein is not fit for government until the Irish Republican Army disarms and disbands. The killing of Robert McCartney by a gang including IRA members has plunged the IRA and Sinn Fein into crisis -- coming just weeks after the guerrilla group was blamed for a £26.5 million ($50 million) bank raid in central Belfast. London and Dublin say there can be no progress on restoring the British-ruled province's regional government -- set up under a 1998 peace deal to share power between divided Protestants and Catholics -- until the issue of IRA criminality is resolved. Home rule was suspended in 2002 when unionists, who support ties to Britain, said they would no longer sit in government with Sinn Fein until the IRA got rid of the weapons which sustained its three-decade campaign against British rule. "It is their declared intent to murder," said hardline Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley in response to the IRA move.

You can not separate Sinn Fein from the IRA.  That has become vividly clear the past 2 weeks.  I'm sorry you can't see it.

McCartney's killer was a high member of Adam's and McGuinness' security team and was seen with them after the incident.

Irish citizen by birth or one of the yanks that uses his Irish grandparents to get duel citizenship?

Ivan,
Can you please provide links to the articles where the Irish suggest that America "goy what it deserved" on 9-11-01? This is very sad news for me. Than again we have idiots here in America expousing the same tripe.

>No excusing it no matter how many times the Kennedy's praise these people.

Birds of a feather.

Corpulent Ted is a socialist and he killed someone, too. I'd say he's earned his IRA stripes rather well.

One final point - after September 11th, Britain has been supporting America in every way, including our dearest blood. Sinn Fein / IRA wrote editorials suggesting America got what it deserved. It's time you realised on which side your bread was buttered, who your friends are and who your enemies are, who sides with you and who sides with the terrorists (including FARC in your hemisphere). Keeping the IRA out of the White House's festivities is a sensible move.

I agree with you, but "America got what it deserved" on 11 September 2001 is far from an uncommon opinion.

God Gave U.S. 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says

By John F. Harris
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 14, 2001; Page C03

Television evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, two of the most prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bear partial responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attacks because their actions have turned God's anger against America.

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Falwell, appearing yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," hosted by Robertson.

"Jerry, that's my feeling," Robertson responded. "I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."

I can tell you're not as new around here as your sign-on date portends.

You should know better than to spout off before "doing your homework."

If your parents were from Cork, I can see where your attitude derives.

The problem is the bias against Irish Catholics in London.

Most of that is due to the bombs that Irish catholics have exploded in public places in England. Just like the bias against Arab muslims here since 9/11.

Terrorists are Terrorists regardless of their cause. The USA cannot fight the War on Terrorism and be taken seriously if they ignore the Terrorism of the IRA.

Catholic Groups who support the IRA are just as guilty as the American Islamic Groups who support Osama Bin Laden.

No, and I don't scoff at slavery or the genocide against the native Americans...but wait, what does that actually mean to me, living now? As a WASP should I turn myself in to the Hague for what what my ancestors may have done [from the east of England, Suffolk, so unlikely to have been involved first hand...but their taxes...].

I guess I'll wait until you pay some reparations for slavery before I take another word of yours in this thread seriously.

to retaliate against someone or a government with killing is not acceptable in the "cililized world", In other words, killing is not going to get you the recognition you need to achieve peace, and if peace is what the IRA wants, they are not acting like it. That debacle is somewhat similar to the tit for tat between the palestinians and the Isreali's. I would say the same thing to them, killing in retaliation is not the answer...

Catholics have a legitimate beef, and those things need to be addressed, but NOT by either the IRA or SF.

This world is at war with a group of people who think any Christian is fair game. This world need to unite in a fight against evil of whatever stripe. A good cause fought by men without morals taints that cause forever. I'm glad you're rethinking your position because good and decent Irish Catholics need your support, not the IRA/SF. They can not be seperated any more than Hizbollah can seperate THEIR military wing from their political wing.
