'couldn't have gone getter,' in the words of her surgeon

Strange words, indeed.

No need for a masectomy? God be praised Laura Ingraham is free of cancer! This comes as wonderful news to her, her fiance, family and friends. Miracles do happen and it turned out God answered a lot of people's prayers.

Initial sentinel node testing

This is really neat...they shoot the tumor with dye. And,then they follow the dye to the lymph nodes. The nodes that "light up" are removed & checked for cancer. Even if there's no cancer in those nodes they're removed anyway because IF there were to be cancer, the nodes that were lit would be the ones most likely to be effected. The ones where the would-be cancer would probably travel to.

Not in lymph nodes; that's good. No micro or macro metastisis is a relief. So they did a biopsy and not anything else.

Sounds like they did a lumpectomy, but they still have to wait for the pathology report, but they can pretty much tell at the time that the nodes are removed whether they're cancerous or not.

No need for a masectomy? (sic)

What good news. Although it seemed yesterday some folks on here were acting like it should have been done automatically. Strange how easy that is when it's not their body being altered.

There's no word yet on whether or how much chemo. But the surgery sounds like it was wildly successful.

I was only going by the "sentinel node" which is a biopsy but I guess on her website the entire article shows she said at the end a "lumpectomy". I guess you can do both at the same time. In some cases when they do a biopsy, they will see if they can do a lumpectomy while in there, if they can get the entire tumor with clear margins.

That is good news indeed that there is no involvement of the lymph nodes.

If they don't find anything on the second series of tests, could she avoid chemo?

I had testicular cancer in 1997. Although I had the surgery then, it took 5 years of CT scans, blood tests, and chest/abdoment x-rays to be declared "free of cancer."

While it's likely it hasn't spread, it may take more time for her to be medically declared "cancer-free."

Well if they got the whole thing in a lumpectomy and there's no presence of cancer in the nodes, then they will at the most do radiation and nothing else.
