A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

He Lights The Way
Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness. -Psalm 112:4
|
A missionary in Peru went to visit a group of believers one evening. She knew that the house where they were meeting was located on a cliff and the path would be treacherous. She took a taxi as far as it could go, and then she began the hazardous ascent to the house on foot. The night was dark and the way was very difficult. As she rounded a bend, she suddenly came upon several believers carrying bright lanterns. They had come out to light the way. Her fears were relieved, and she ascended the path easily.
In a similar way, God lights our path. When we trust Jesus as our Savior, He who is the Light of the world enters our lives and removes the darkness of our sin and despair. This light continues to comfort us through times of sorrow. In the midst of sadness, trouble, illness, or disappointment, the Lord brightens the way and encourages His children by giving hope. This may come through a word of exhortation from a fellow believer. It may be the illumination of God's Word by the ministry of the Holy Spirit. It may be calm reassurance in response to heartfelt prayer. Or it may be the miraculous supply of a specific need. Whatever the case, God sends light when we are engulfed in darkness. Jesus gives light in the darkest night! -Dave Egner
No darkness have we who in Jesus abide- The Light of the world is Jesus; We walk in the Light when we follow our Guide- The Light of the world is Jesus. -Bliss
God sometimes puts us in the dark to show us that Jesus is the light.

American Forces Press Service
SAN DIEGO, - The U.S. Navy made a good first impression on a group of civilian visitors during a recent tour of Naval Air Station North Island here.
The visitors were part of the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference, a group of specially selected civilian leaders who spend a week visiting military installations to learn about the U.S. military. The 54 participants of the conference's 69th iteration toured stateside military bases April 24 to May 1.
They arrived in San Diego April 29 and toured the naval air station the following day. Prior to San Diego, the group visited with the Coast Guard in Yorktown, Va.; the Air Force at Moody Air Force Base, Ga.; the Marines at Parris Island, S.C.; and the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Naval Air Station North Island is home to several famous naval assets, among them the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier; the older USS Nimitz; the USS Belleau Wood, an amphibious assault and command ship; and two Los Angeles-class nuclear submarines, the USS Asheville and the USS Topeka.
"There are some amazing craft at this installation," Vice Adm. Terrance Etnyre, commander of the Naval Surface Force in the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in his welcoming remarks aboard the USS Belleau Wood.
Naval Air Station North Island is home to 100,000 Navy and Marine personnel, 100,000 family members, and 200,000 naval retirees. It also is the master station for all helicopters on the West Coast. The Belleau Wood's commanding officer, Capt. Robert Ford, described the base as "the heart of the Navy and Marine Corps."
After breakfast in the ship's Ward Room, the JCOC participants toured the huge vessel. They received a briefing on fire safety and observed a simulated fire drill, in which designated personnel from all over the ship rushed in seconds after the alarm sounded, jumped into firefighting gear, and hurried off to their duties.
"In the Navy, every sailor is a fireman," a briefer said. "The main thing is to keep the ship in the fight."
After the fire drill, it was back to the flight deck to watch the ship sail under the Coronado Bridge, a huge half circle that spans San Diego Bay. On the way, they passed the USS Ronald Reagan, which the group would visit later; the USS Nimitz; and the USS Midway, now decommissioned and docked for public tours.
The USS Belleau Wood deploys as the flagship of an expeditionary strike group. It can carry a complete Marine battalion, along with all the supplies and equipment needed in an assault, and land them by helicopter or amphibious craft. The 820 foot flight deck can accommodate up to 30Marine Corps helicopters and AV-8 Harriers.
Like the Midway, the Belleau Wood is scheduled to be decommissioned in October 2005 to make way for a new class of amphibious assault ships.
In the ship's Combat Information Center, the group witnessed a combat simulation in which a hypothetical tyrannical state launches an air attack on the vessel and the crew is forced to defend the ship.
One JCOC participant from each of two groups was chosen to serve as "tactical action officer" of the operation.
Sitting in the TAO's chair before a full array of screens and digital readouts, with advisers on each side, the TAO-for-a-day had to direct the battle based on the information he received from the crew and three radar screens that were tracking the enemy aircraft and surface vessels.
The JCOC participants got to see firsthand what it was like to be in full battle mode as two enemy fighters departed the hostile nation's airspace with unknown intentions.
The ship's crew called out situational updates and presented the TAO with options ranging from firing warning shots or deploying "chaff" -- tiny strips of metal foil used to confuse enemy radar -- to divert enemy fire, to more drastic measures, such as shooting down the aircraft, as the hostile craft "locked on" the Belleau Wood and prepared to fire.
A cry of, "Vampire, vampire, vampire," rang out, indicating inbound missiles, and the JCOC TAO ordered the hostile craft taken out. As the blips on the radar screen disappeared, a cheer rose up from the group.
"Boy, that was something," TAO-for-a-day and JCOC participant Kurt Moyland said.
In the final demonstration of the day, the JCOC participants watched as a "landing craft, air cushioned" amphibious vehicle came roaring out of the well below the stern amidst a spray of water and mist. The small vessel spent the next several minutes moving forward and aft alongside the ship so the JCOC could get a good look at it.
LCACs are used to transport Marines and equipment to the beach and can travel at speeds up to 80 knots.
"When the president wants to send in the Marines, he used to ask, 'Where are the carriers?'" Vane told the group in closing remarks. "Today he asks, 'Where is the amphibious strike group?' I hope we gave you a taste of that today," he said.
Following the LCAC demonstration, the JCOC participants disembarked from the USS Belleau Wood in small boats, launched from the same well as the LCAC they had observed.
"We have all been ... amazed and impressed," one JCOC participant remarked. "Amazed by the technology and impressed with the men and women who people the U.S. military."

Good morning, Your Honor.
We look forward to your offerings of The Daily Bread,
finding so much contained in the brief 'servings.'
Today's reminder is beautiful, reminding us God indeed will light our way...
"In a similar way, God lights our path.
-Dave Egner"
======================================
TC has this demonstrated, living this in his physical fight, with the help of a "few friends."
Keeping our eyes upon His Light can lead to overcoming, and ultimate victory...
Thank you for feeding the flock, Rus, in His Name ---

Interesting how the press is portraying as "odd" the relationship of our Commander-in-Chief with President Putin.
They of course focus on "hate 'em and shun 'em if they don't agree with you 100%," while President Bush chooses to employ a steady trickle of openness and good will to make inroads and, hopefully, gains.
How on earth can you make headway if you sit in separate corners and aim barbs and daggers (and perhaps one day missiles) at one another?!
President Bush lives according to his faith in His Creator, seeking wisdom and guidance.
I am reminded of 2 photographs I saved nearly 5 years ago, taken the weekend before the 2000 Presidential Election as he and Mrs. Bush landed in Tampa...
What is interesting is while they were blessed with those rainbows and sunshine, a photograph of Al Gore landing in Miami the very same day in heavy rain was published (I had it and lost it)....tells a story, doesn't it?
May God continue to shower you with blessings, and enable you to effectively lead America, Mr. President -- Amen.
Our prayers for God's guidance, for our America, and *for those who defend her* will continue to be sent in steady streams.
