A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Last week Louie made a comment about his granny always wearing a bonnet when she worked outside, and the next day, from a friend, I received "Grandma's Apron" in my email. Both his comment and the story took me back to my childhood, and visits at my grandparents, and seeing my Grandma as she went about her daily chores.
I wanted to share the apron story because it's cute.
The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken-coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot woodstove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.
REMEMBER THIS!
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

Would you like to join me on the porch for a glass of Grandma's lemonade? She always made the best, but part of it was sittin' and swingin' in that big porch swing.
Lemon Syrup
1 cup water 2 1/2 cups sugar 3 cups fresh lemon juice Pinch of salt Strips of zest from 4 lemons
Combine water and sugar in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Add salt and lemon zest. Raise heat and bring to boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Cool. Add lemon juice. Refrigerate in a covered jar. Remove zest before using.
For lemonade, add 3 tablespoons lemon syrup to a glass of water. Add ice cubes. Garnish with fresh lemon slices.

Grandma's Apron brings back memories around here too.
Seein' as how I do a lot of cookin' around here, my family presented me with a Grandpa Apron adorned with everyone's handprint.
Coffee? You betcha. Thanks.

My Grammy never drank lemonade. She sipped on rock and rye and bourbon.
I think I take after her. We had the grandkids over this weekend and I let them watch me guzzle a few beers. Their Grammy (Maggie) is a teetotaler.
