PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

[Page: S5714] GPO's PDF

---

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.

Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.

On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.

Did I hear Diane Feinstein right? Did she say Orrin Hatch suggested Ruth Bader Ginsberg and one other judge to Bill Clinton, for the Supreme Court?

Yes. Radical gender feminst and former council to the ACLU Ruth Bader Ginsburg was recommended as an acceptable choice by Orrin Hatch.

Guess we need to borrow from the international scene and use the cages like the Russians are using for one of the Beslan murderers on trial.

LOL, I love it. Think of the message that would send. Think of the lefties going ballistic all over the place. Lots of upside to this idea.

I didn't give any attention to the details of the impeachment proceeding at the time, but I did make not of Graham's comments on social security in the past few months. Graham's weak knees on this, as a result, came as no surprise.

Frist is a cardiac surgeon and deals with life and death in a manner that can't be imagined.

If the GOP does pull the nuclear option off, I wonder whether Bill Frist will be getting any apologies from the FReepers who bashed him incessantly throughout this ordeal?

If he pulls it off, it will balance out his rolling over on Specter. I would be willing to judge him going forward with a clean slate. But I will not apologize for fearing the worst in light of his track record.

Thank you for the info.
It basically voids any argument by the Dems that it takes 60 votes to change a Senate rule. Byrd didn't even get 60 to change the rules but if the Dems argument holds any water they needed 67. Byrd changed the rules 4 times on a simple majority.

I agree and she is going after him again, because he said majority rules! WHAT PART DON"T THEY GET? WE are the Majority and WE want these Judges and PEOPLE the Majority WE elected to RULE!

If the reasoning is that the shackles influences the jury to give a harsher sentence....couldn't the opposite be said?

If I am on a jury that convicts a person of murder, but he/she is allowed to walk around WITHOUT shackles, then perhaps I am persuaded that he/she isn't dangerous anymore, and am too lenient in sentencing...

There are WAY too many convicts that commit crimes upon release from prison as it is....

I am guessing that is why he is going about this in a "surgical strike" manner rather than just cutting the aorta! LOL

I don't think I'm ever going to get over Estrada's withdrawal.

Bah! Estrada was nothing compared to what the "Gang of Four" (Biden - Leahy - Kennedy - Metzenbaum) did to Bob Bork -- with the decisive assistance of the current Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. At least Arlen did fight for Clarence Thomas.

"The reason McCain and the others are upset is that they can anticipate the same may well happen to them. "

McCain has two things on his mind; the Presidency in 08 and lacking that to get on the ticket as VP for a Conservative to offset whatever Hillary has up her sleeve.

IMHO what McCain is doing here is negotiating with Frist to get on a Frist/McCain ticket in 08. Laugh all you want, McCain is positioning himself. We all think he is a stupid RINO. I submit that the only way McCain has a chance to get to the WH is as a VP.

Rehnquist wheeled into Capitol Medical Department

CAPITOL HILL As the Senate debated judicial filibusters, Chief Justice William Rehnquist was wheeled into the Capitol to visit the medical department.
His low-key appearance was a reminder of what is at stake in the debate.

You are correct. You did not call Senator Frist a RINO. Nor did you contend that he had to be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting the constitutional option. You said, and let me quote, ". . . When you have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the right thing . . ."

What is your basis for the statement that Senator Frist had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing? I have been following the hearings since the democrats first started the filibuster, and it seems to me that Senator Frist has been in the forefront of those trying to round up enough RINO votes to invoke the constitutional option. What evidence do you have that he has been reluctant to do the right thing?

Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist is pushed in a wheelchair on Capitol Hill, Monday, May 23, 2005, after his visit to the Capitol Medical Department. The Supreme Court, re-entering the politically charged abortion debate amid burgeoning speculation about Rehnquist's retirement, agreed Monday to hear a state appeal seeking to reinstate a law requiring parental notification before minors can terminate their pregnancies.

"Why thank you, I get to take quick peeks at it while I'm
working. "
Same here. I always have a peek while at work. I have been refusing to give money period. Except, I have not even bothered telling them why -I've been too angry at them and have been considering opting out of even knowing about the issues. I guess ignorance was bliss. -but it was not have much fun as being with freepers. I'll write back a note next time I'm being asked for money.
