On the afternoon of Feb. 8, 1999, a man named Steven R. Kangas entered One Oxford Center in downtown Pittsburgh. He carried a Kel Tek 9-mm semiautomatic pistol, 47 rounds of ammunition and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Kangas took the elevator to the 39th floor. He reportedly paused at the door of the Sarah Scaife Foundation, pressed his face against the glass and tried the door. It was locked. Kangas moved on. For nine hours, he holed up in a men's room down the hall, getting drunk. A building engineer discovered him at about 11:30 p.m., lying on the floor, mumbling incoherently. When the man left to call police, Kangas evidently sat up on a toilet and shot himself in the head. The building engineer returned a few minutes later with a coworker, only to find Kangas slumped over dead.

Police wrote off Kangas's death as a simple suicide. However, further investigation revealed that the 37-year-old Kangas may have been an assassin.

He had arrived in Pittsburgh only that morning on a Greyhound bus, with $14.63 in his pocket. It turned out that Kangas ran a popular leftwing website called "Liberalism Resurgent: A Response to the Right." Several of Kangas' writings attacked Richard Mellon Scaife – oil and banking heir, philanthropist, newspaper publisher and funder of political causes. Scaife's office was right down the hall from the men's room where Kangas killed himself. Some investigators speculate that Kangas – unable to enter the locked office – had retreated to the men's room to wait in ambush for Scaife while steeling his nerves with whiskey.

Kangas was a former Army intelligence specialist from a conservative, Michigan family. The bio and resumé he published online state that he learned Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., in 1983 and later shipped out to Berlin, where he intercepted and translated Soviet military communications for NATO. Kangas claimed in his online bio that he was stationed for a time in Central America, "doing things I am not at liberty to discuss."

After leaving the Army in 1986, Kangas earned a bachelor's degree in Russian Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz. "I visited Russia in 1989," he writes, "and the trip was one of the most incredible experiences of my life."

By this time, for reasons he does not clearly explain, Kangas had rejected both his conservative upbringing and his military indoctrination, to become a leftist. His writings hint that he may have felt some regret about this choice. On his website, he summarized his life in these tongue-in-cheek, yet oddly self-punishing words: "I left religion at age 12, and conservatism at 26, to become a godless pinko commie lying socialist weasel."

A few months before he died, Kangas quit his job with a Las Vegas company that made gambling software for betting on horse races. Kangas tried to launch his own Web pornography business, shooting sadomasochistic sex scenes in his apartment and selling them online. The venture failed, mainly because Kangas blew his money on booze and prostitutes.

In real life, Kangas had become a loser. But on the Web, he had achieved something akin to celebrity. An entity calling itself the Robert F. Kennedy Democrats honored Kangas' "Liberalism Resurgent" page with its 1997 "Excelsior Award" for websites that "communicate the highest progressive ideals."

"Help Fight the Right!" Kangas exhorted readers. He recommended Al Gore's "Earth in the Balance" as one of his favorite books. He railed against Rush Limbaugh. "The CIA and its allies turned American AM radio into a haven for conservative talk-show hosts," Kangas ranted. More ominously, Kangas portrayed Scaife as a leader of what he called the "New Overclass," a cabal of rightwing forces that "undemocratically control our government."

On his website, Kangas warned leftwing activists that their efforts would be wasted, "if they are not directed at the heart of the problem. It is absolutely critical to identify what the true core problem is, because all other problems in society stem from it." Evidently, Kangas had decided that Scaife was the "core problem." But why Scaife?

One answer may lie in an article from Kangas's website entitled, "Myth: There's no 'vast rightwing conspiracy' to get Clinton." He opened his essay with a famous quote from Hillary Clinton, excerpted from her Jan. 27, 1998, interview on NBC's "Today Show." Readers will recall that interview from Part 3 of this series, in which Hillary said, among other things, "[B]ill and I have been accused of everything, including murder … drug running … [I]t's part of an effort … to undo the results of two elections. … I do believe that this is a battle." Kangas highlighted the following quote from Hillary:

"The great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it, is this vast rightwing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president. A few journalists have kind of caught on to it, but it has not yet been fully revealed to the American public. And actually, you know, in a bizarre sort of way, this [the Lewinsky scandal] may do it."

It would seem that Kangas took up Hillary's challenge to "find it, write about it and explain it." In his essay, he set out to prove that Hillary was right, that there was indeed a vast and sinister conspiracy bent on toppling the Clintons. Like Hillary, Kangas painted the various Clinton scandals as frame-ups, funded by shadowy, rightwing moneymen. In his view – as in the view of many mainstream media commentators – the most prominent of the anti-Clinton moneymen was Richard Mellon Scaife. "Scaife is undoubtedly the most important figure behind the Clinton scandals," he writes. Nearly 60 percent of Kangas' 2,059-word text focuses on Scaife.

Significantly, Kangas charges that "Scaife is obsessed with proving that Vince Foster's suicide was actually a murder. He goes so far as to call his death 'the Rosetta Stone of the Clinton administration.'" Kangas also notes that Scaife had assigned a full-time reporter named Christopher Ruddy to investigate Foster's death.

We may never know for sure why Kangas took a gun to Scaife's office, nor why he decided, at the last minute, to shoot himself instead. We do know one thing, however. In the tortured recesses of Kangas' mind, the figure of Hillary loomed large. Kangas studied Hillary's words with care. He believed her story. He felt her pain. Kangas made Hillary's enemies his. In the final analysis, he may have died for her – shedding his blood to guard the secret of the Rosetta Stone.

The Rosetta Stone

Would-be assassin Steven Kangas was correct about one thing: Richard Mellon Scaife had indeed described the Vincent Foster case as a "Rosetta Stone" – an unreadable tablet whose decipherment might one day illuminate every mystery of the Clintons.

"It is the Rosetta Stone to the Clinton administration," Scaife told the late John F. Kennedy Jr. in an exclusive interview in the January 1999 issue of George magazine. "Once you solve that one mystery, you'll know everything that's going on or went on." Pressed to explain further, Scaife responded:

"Listen, [Clinton] can order people done away with at his will. He's got the entire federal government behind him. … God, there must be 60 people … who have died mysteriously – including eight of Clinton's former bodyguards. … There have been very mysterious deaths."

The Vincent Foster "Rosetta Stone" remains undeciphered to this day. But the struggle to decode it, in large measure, gave birth to the Web Underground.

I've always thought a detailed book exposing the Clinton body count would be an interesting read. Surprisingly, many the average Joe has never heard these incredible stories (i.e. suicides who shot themselves twice). Of course, the idiots on the left have created a similar compilation attempting to tie mysterious deaths to the Bush family. Kangas is on this list.

...just so's he could be with his friend BILL there.

The CLINTONS did this thru White House Press Releases, HILLARY's nationally syndicated First Lady Newspaper column and a hastily called Presidential News Conference ...just before JFK jr's smashed plane was finally found on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

A CLINTON lie that was quickly exposed on National TV when the Nixon Library posted on its front lobby wall before NBC TV cameras...

...JFK jr's handwritten February 4, 1971 'Thank you letter to President & Mrs. NIXON' for their having him, his mother and sister over for dinner in the White House the night before. His real first White House visit since his father JFK's 1963 Assassination.

And then why, Oh why did the CLINTONS then react thru a White House Press Release by blaming the dead and now silent JFK jr for their own lie ...by telling the American People it was all his fault for not telling them about his 1971 White House visit when he visited them there in 1998..?

Thank GOD a call had been made into the Nixon Library asking that it post their 1971 JFK jr Thank You Letter to the NIXONS before national TV Cameras...

Interesting. I didn't know the lefties were trying to pin Kangas' death on Bush.

A few have tried to pin it on Mr. Scaife. Needless to say, this seems a bit of a stretch. Even if we grant, for the sake of argument, that Scaife were the sort of man who would resort to violence in retaliation for some boilerplate leftwing rants on a Web site, one would think that a business mogul with Scaife's resources would have been able to hire hitmen of sufficient skill and intelligence to carry out the deed in a more discreet location than right outside Scaife's office.

Steve Kangas: His web site, Liberalism Resurgent, was meticulously researched and presented such a problem to the "real boss" of George Bush, Richard Scaife, that he hired a private detective to look into Kangas' past. Steve Kangas was found in a 39th-floor bathroom outside of Scaife's offices at One Oxford Centre, in Pittsburgh, an apparent suicide. Mr. Kangas, a very prolific writer, left no note. He had brought a fully-packed suitcase of clothes with him to Pittsburgh. He bought a burglar alarm shortly before he left for Pittsburgh. Why did he need a burglar alarm if he was going to commit suicide? An avowed advocate of gun control, he nevertheless bought a gun. What was he afraid of? Why did he go to Pittsburgh? After his death, his computer was sold for $150 and its hard drive wiped clean. Everything in his apartment was thrown away.

Note the detailed list of Kangas' activities prior to his death. They conveniently omit the fact that LEO found him with "$14.63 in his pockets and a nearly empty whiskey bottle nearby". Also surveillances cameras in the building show Kangas spent nearly nine hours inside One Oxford Center before he was discovered and killed himself.

Hmm. These Bush Body Count people seem to be implying that Scaife hired detectives to research Kangas before Kangas's apparent assassination attempt. That's incorrect, to my knowledge.

For obvious reasons, Scaife hired investigators to probe Kangas' background after the man's body turned up outside Scaife's office. But nothing I have read indicates that Scaife knew of Kangas' existence before then.

Looks to me as if the lefties are up to their old tricks again — telling lies.

Here's a quote from the NTSB report on JFK's accident. The term "target" refers to JKF's airplane:

A performance study of the radar data revealed that the target began a descent from 5,500 feet about 34 miles west of MVY. The speed during the descent was calculated to be about 160 knots indicated airspeed (KIAS), and the rate of descent was calculated to have varied between 400 and 800 feet per minute (fpm). About 2138, the target began a right turn in a southerly direction. About 30 seconds later, the target stopped its descent at 2,200 feet and began a climb that lasted another 30 seconds. During this period of time, the target stopped the turn, and the airspeed decreased to about 153 KIAS. About 2139, the target leveled off at 2,500 feet and flew in a southeasterly direction. About 50 seconds later, the target entered a left turn and climbed to 2,600 feet. As the target continued in the left turn, it began a descent that reached a rate of about 900 fpm. When the target reached an easterly direction, it stopped turning; its rate of descent remained about 900 fpm. At 2140:15, while still in the descent, the target entered a right turn. As the target's turn rate increased, its descent rate and airspeed also increased. The target's descent rate eventually exceeded 4,700 fpm. The target's last radar position was recorded at 2140:34 at an altitude of 1,100 feet. (For a more detailed description of the target's [accident airplane's] performance, see Section, "Tests and Research," Subsection, "Aircraft Performance Study.")

According to this section of the report, JFK Jr. was descending at about 160 knots just before crashing. His descent rate reached almost 1 mile per minute before the crash. There's no way that a twin-engine prop plane can reach speeds of 500 mph, and there's no way to sabotage such an airplane to make it go that fast. This doesn't mean there was no foul play involved in this crash, but I also read that spatial disorientation is one of the leading causes of airplane crashes that have been analyzed by the NTSB. That said, because this crash occurred during the Clinton Administration, I rule out nothing other than a 500 mph crash speed.

A TWA Flight 800 747 Jetliner, filled with innocents, that just happened to go down in flames the very night before HILLARY-Hired White House Security Chief CRAIG LIVINGSTONE was set to testify in Congress on National TV that she had hired him to get her those FBI Files on Republicans in Congress, or to protect her instead with his pleading the 5th against self-incrimination.

The resultant cancelling of CRAIG LIVINGSTONE's TV Testimony in Congress that next morning, out of respect for the suddenly lost souls floating on the Atlantic, that allowed him to actually plead the 5th away from the glare of National TV Cameras over 3 weeks later.

Other JFK jr crash reports I've seen over the years show JFK jr's plane veering up about 30 degrees for a short time and then abruptly turning straight downward, fast. Those reports had him entering the Atlantic Ocean going over 500 mph.
Photos first shown in American Media, Inc Publications months after the crash show JFK jr's pilot seat blown staight backward. A 360 degree reverse of his seat with the top of his seat arched completely backwards, touching the forward tip of the undercarriage of his seat's bottom, like a pancake folded in half.

Looking for all the world to the reader like it had hit the surface of the Atlanitc going over 500 mph.

It's just no physically possible for a Piper Saratoga airplane to reach a speed of 500 mph, even in a crash dive. There's no possible force that an accelerate that kind of plane up to that speed. The Piper Saratoga has a top speed of around 180 knots. The force of gravity acting on a free-falling object in earth's atmosphere is only strong enough to accelerate that object up to 120 mph, so if the plane was flying at top speed in a very steep dive then theoretically it could approach a speed of 300 mph. But 500 mph is impossible for that airplane, and you may have seen that speed mentioned on some wacko conspiracy theorists website.

As for the missile shootdown of TWA 800, I doubt that had anything to do with Craig Livingstone, but if I recall correctly it was shot down on Iraqi independence day. Hmmmmmmmmmm.....interesting coincidence. There's a ton of information about TWA 800 here at FR. Just ask Alamo-Girl

Funny you mention JFK Jr, there was a guy on the beach at Martha's Vinyard, that saw a flash in the sky, the night of the crash.

He was a reporter from some newspaper on the mainland.

They shut him up quick and got him off the island.

It was a strange crash, the airplane was equiped with a nice auto pilot, it would be hard to crash if JFK were using the resources for NAV and Auto Pilot correctly.

The Aircraft was recovered and crushed to bits, no one outside the "investigation" was allowed to view it.

It was a strange crash. Here's an interesting quote from the NTSB investigation report: "In the 15 months before the accident, the pilot had flown either to or from the destination area about 35 times. The pilot flew at least 17 of these flight legs without a CFI on board, of which 5 were at night."

Assuming this part of the NTSB report is correct, then JFK Jr had made the equivalent of about 17.5 round trips over this route. With this level of familiarity with the flight and the terrain, one would think it would be difficult for him to become spatially disoriented. The NTSB investigation of TWA 800 certainly appears to have been corrupted and I wouldn't be suprised if the investigation into JFK Jr's crash was also compromised by the Clinton administration. JFK Jr certainly would have been a formidable opponent for Hillary in the 2000 New York senate race.
