I bet the cruise ships would make more money off the govt than they would booking a trip. Especially with the current price of fuel.

There is a protocol for this sort of thing. The Gov. has to make such a request to the President.

Ever hear of Federalism?

Where is G.W. Bush and why isn't he standing on a rescue vehicle in the middle of NO providing leadership and support? He is making the same mistake that his father made when Andrew hit Florida in 1992. He is setting himself up to be portrayed as yet another Nero. Either get out there, or deputize Guliani and get him in there. It seems like the mayor of No has vanished into oblivion, and the leadership void is just another aspect of the tragedy.

That would CAUSE more problems than it would solve.

I am assuming these two politicians are democrats??? If yes, it does not surprise me; democrats are the dumbest people on earth.

"More than 1,600 Mississippi National Guardsmen were activated to help with the recovery, and the Alabama Guard sent 800 of its soldiers to Mississippi as well."

Such a style over substance move rings of Clintonism.

Clinton was a pretty sharp politician; he is also alot of other things which are largely unprintable, but, he knew how to feed a media frenzy without being turned into the main course. At least in this it would be wise to practice a little "Clintonism".

YES....the MILITARY COULD DO IT....we know that! Too bad they have to waste their time and effort on something that should have been done BEFORE THE STORM by the locals.

Well, I don't think the Feds should do something so drastic. For better or for worse, the folks in NO and Louisiana are being treated fairly: that is, they are getting the leadership they selected and therefore deserve.

If Nagin and Blanco ask for help from the Feds, they feds should do anything they can to help. Rudy isn't a secret weapon and need not be carted out.

Nagin & Blanco's unimpressiveness hasn't anything to do with being democrats, and it has everything to do with them being poor leaders in a crisis. Plenty of dems are fine in a crisis. It's not a partisan issues.

It's personal: Nagin and Blanco don't personally have what it takes.

They were told to get out. They did not listen. So now you have this.

Cruise ships sound great on paper. The next question is, how many cruise ships do we have lying around?

The quickest help will come from the military. There's not enough time to round up cruise ships.

The President is cutting short his vacation in Texas and heading back to the White House tommorow to coordinate the recovery effort. Going to New Orleans right now would accomplish nothing.

Were Nagin and Blanco reading 'My Pet Goat' to school children when the hurricane hit?

Yeah, he can do that and immediately be accused of "grandstanding" and "using those poor people's suffering" for political gain which will take the emphasis off of the problem at hand.

If I were him I would approach the personal appearances very carefully.

Yes, Clinton would be down there right now, kissing babies, and telling women that he feels their pain. It'd bump up his poll numbers. But it wouldn't help the situation any, and would in fact impede rescue efforts as resources would have to be diverted for his visit.

You are sure right about no confidence and I would say no leadership. What she should have said was, go in there and get everyone out, not more or less just suggest that people be evacuated.

They are dems but as I said, that has nothing to do with it. I can think of two dems I'd take in a crisis in nyc over Mayor Bloomberg (R): Ed Koch and Oscar Goodman.

It's not a partisan issue.

I think there is a stong impression that Mayor Nagin and Gov Blanco were really caught with their pants down and as the situation grows increasingly out of control (stranded folks at the Superdome, lots of open looting, etc.) they haven't risen to the occasion at all.

I really don't know what more they could do. It seriously looks like the catastrophic damage that was being called for had indeed happened. They are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. They need support not criticism.
