Wednesday's funeral for Chief Justice William Rehnquist, a Protestant, will be in Washington's Roman Catholic cathedral -- an unusual but not forbidden occurrence under church rules.

The Catholic directory on interfaith matters says churches are "generally reserved for Catholic worship" but local bishops may permit worship by other Christians who lack a place "for celebrating worthily their religious ceremonies."

There are rapidly becoming two branches of Episopalians,

AAC (American Anlican Council) --- very conservative.

ECUSA ---- gay bishop, et al

Not sure which branch the National Catherdral is.

From the linked article:

Rev. Jan Lookingbill of Emmanual Lutheran Church in Bethesda, Md., where Rehnquist long held membership... said he would participate in the funeral along with Pastors George Evans Jr. and Jeffrey Wilson of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean, Va., where Rehnquist was a member in recent years.

Rehnquist's McLean and Bethesda congregations are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a denomination of 5 million members with headquarters in Chicago.

It is Episcopal but from it's outset it has had a mandate to offer nondenominational services.

The National Cathedral is amazing and if you have never been there make sure you go when you are in DC. They offer tours throughout the day.

That was bad. For your penance,

Since most of the 95 are tried and true Catholic doctrine, perhaps we'll just skip all that.

We can all raise a glass and remember Bill. He was a good man when he was among us.

It is impossible to tell from the website text that it is ELCA, but one can discern that the congregation is from the open communion statement.

You are correct. It is ELCA. I went to the denominational directory and found it there:
http://www.elca.org/ScriptLib/OS/Congregations/cdsSearch.asp?state=MD&city=Bethesda&I3.x=17&I3.y=4

You do have to wonder why a member of a liberal Lutheran group wouldn't get buried in an Episcopal church.

You've got to be kidding, right? National Cathedral is as liberal, pro-homo, PC, left-wing, pantheistic Piskie as they come.

The conservative Anglican movement in this country is still small and struggling to get off the ground. If you have evidence to the contrary that would lead you to believe they might have captured the Washington National Cathedral, why do tell.

Think of Bill as an honorary Catholic.

I'm protestant but I wouldn't be upset at having my funeral at a Catholic Chrurch. I need all the help I can get, especially at that point in my life. ;)

Have your funeral in a Catholic Church, have a Rabbi perform it. Cover all the bases!

A few years ago in a city near me, a neighborhood's residents were up in arms because the city wanted to place a home for mentally challenged adults in their neighborhood.

Their city councilman, who also lived in the neighborhood blasted them at a council meeting, telling them "It is my belief that these folks have a free pass to heaven. You had all better hope that they aren't on the zoning committee when you get there."

What's the problem? We've got lots of other religions, including pagans, worshipping here in Los Angeles in the cathedral.

No nailing of Theses on the front door please.

ROFL! You have a deal. But we will leave some decent hymn books in the collection plate.

Seriously, it's nice of the Catholic Church to do this.

Actually, many churches, including Protestant, loan out their facilities to people of other faiths. You don't hear much about it because it would be catching the Christians in acts of tolerance, and we just can't have that, now, can we?
