Pictures from Flight 93 Memorial, 09/11/2005

Four years ago to this day, United Airlines Flight 93 was flying over unremarkable farmland near Somerset, Pennsylvania. Inside the plane there was chaos, as the passengers started to organize their legendary resistance.

“Let’s Roll,” said Todd Beamer, as he and his fellows charged into the cockpit of the enormous jet. Here is where they and the other passengers are now resting forever.

This is not a political memorial. I see no racism, no attacks on Islam, just a moving tribute to a much-beloved group of people.

There has been a great controversy about the idea of a permanent memorial, a more formal building than the informal set of flags and tributes you see here. And yet somehow I think the flags and tributes came straight from the hearts of real people, both friends of the passengers and local residents bringing moving sympathy for those who died.

As a result, it seems fitting today to record the memorial as it is. Perhaps next year there will be a beautiful, soaring glossy structure over this place, but it will not be as moving as these simple tributes I saw today.

And so, without further ado, here they are: Pictures of the feelings and love of a people.

These supposed "professional" architects ought to be smart enough to know that anything even remotely resembling a symbol of Islam would be a bad idea. There is no way to convince me that it is completely benign. Who do they think they are kidding, honestly?

Check out my post above.

#34..I agree....Surely there was a whole lot of praying going on....

..but don't hold your breath on the Cross being centerpiece to the memorial.

All those folks are in eternity now.....but the folks living will not honor the Cross & what it meant to those about to die.

Someone is bound to say...'it wouldn't be politically correct'....

...May God help us all.

It was good but that idiot who interviewed the families I cannot remember his name. He quoted Todd Beamer as saying, "Let us Roll" right after 9/11. Anyway he made a stupid remark and said, "It seems some people have forgotten about this day". I believe he was also fishing for the family members to bash Bush, but they did not. This was my interpatation of it. What is that jerks name?

I've suggested leaving the crescent, provided it is impaled on the foot of a cross, the way you see it on top of the domes of churches St. Stephan of Moldova built to commemorate his victories over the Turks.
From www.orthodoxed.org:
Sometimes the bottoms of the Crosses found on Russian churches will be adorned with a crescent. In 1486, Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) conquered the city of Kazan which had been under the rule of Moslem Tatars, and in remembrance of this, he decreed that from henceforth the Islamic crescent be placed at the bottom of the Crosses to signify the victory of the Cross (Christianity) over the Crescent (Islam).

And from www.byzantines.net:
...Following the capture of Muslim Kazan by Tsar Ivan IV in the 16th century the custom arose in Moscow and the other cities of Russia to place atop cathedrals and churches the cross over the inverted crescent moon as symbol of the triumph of Christianity over Islam...

That's the best point I have seen made yet. Has anybody put together a polite, tactful, and loving note to the families to voice our concerns? I agree with all of you, but I do hate to see these families embroiled in turmoil.

Amen. It's a memorial to the god damned Muslim terrorists. A red Crescent is not a memorial to the lost, it is a surrender to the damnable vermin who killed them.

It's a travesty in the extreme.

"I would dare to say that if they insist on using this design, that vandalism will be a problem."

It won't be vandalism if you call it 'harvesting'!

That's the best point I have seen made yet.

It was a bit of an AHAH moment for me and a bit of a window into twisted mind of this architect jerk. I think he shares the sensibilities of the composer Stockhausen who once described the WTC bombing as "the greatest work of art ever". His monument is really a sort of celebration of this "great work of art".

I suspect that a part of him also thrills in subtly making fools of the flight 93 families along with all the rest of us who have not reached his sublime level of artistic refinement.

"What is that jerks name?"

As I said, didn't get to see the beginning. But the part I saw had Tom Brokaw interviewing family members.

Before everyone has a panic attack over the memorial design you need to listen to this interview today by Dan Caplis and Craig Silverman of KHOW. They talked with the wife of the flight 93 pilot and she was also on the board of the design committee.

(Windows Media Player)

She says the memorial design should go on as planned. None of the families members of the folks who died in the crash object to design either.

Yes, so as many Freepers as possible get a chance to hear the interview. You want to cover it up because it doesn't serve your agenda or something?

By the way in the interview she mentions her support for Tancredo's work protecting our 'open' borders.

I don't care what she thinks, so I don't need to listen to her. I am sure we could find plenty of 9-11 widows who would want islamic tributes, or anti-american propaganda at ground zero - so we all must bow to their wishes and accept it?
