Project Appleseed: Planting the Spirit of the American Rifleman

The Revolutionary War Veterans Association is launching a nationwide effort to re-establish what once stood as the primary protection of our unalienable liberties. Through Project Appleseed, their goal is to "plant the Spirit of the Rifleman" across America, working together to find or create facilities and resources to allow every able and willing citizen to learn to shoot a rifle safely and well, and to do so close to home.

It's a great idea, but I think they will have trouble because of this statement:

"With your help, trained citizens will once again stand ready in every city, town and village across America, equipped and trained to defend their homes, their families and their communities against those who would take away our birthrights."

Lefties and soccer moms who might be attracted to the program while thinking of fun marksmanship contests and Revolutionary War reenactments will not react well to the real reason behind the Second Amendment. It would be better to ease them into shooting by describing how much fun it is.

You're absolutely right. NRA has a Women On Target program that helps support Ladies' Field Days at ranges across the country. We had one at our range the first Saturday of November.

You would be surprised at the women that come out of the woodwork for shooting when it's a receptive environment, they don't have the intimidation of a bunch of "Master-Blasters" looking over their shoulders or checking their targets to see how the "girls down the line" are doing.

We had stages set up with IDPA (http://www.firstcoastidpa.com/), USPSA (http://www.sepsa.com/) ICORE (http://www.icore.org/) represented, plus combat rifle, shotgun, 25 yard bullseye, and others.

I remember one group of ladies, probably mid-50's-ish, who were keeping detailed notes on the weapons they handled. When I commented on it, they answered they wanted to keep track of the ones they liked the best, because they WERE going to get pistols, and carry permits, whether their husbands liked it or not.

I guess it works on the same principle as the women-only gyms. Lots of women want to hit the gym, they just don't want to do it in front of a bunch of guys.

I'm happy to see Jews supporting this. I guess they see the importance of gun ownership in light of the holocaust. Hitler made gun ownership by citizens illegal in Nazi Germany. In the movie 'Failsafe' there is a line that says it all: "If every German was greeted by a Jew with a gun, would the holocaust have happened?"
Probably Not!!!

Lot's of folks own an AK or SKS or even an AR15, but don't know how to effectively use it. An AR15, or even better an M1A is designed to be able to place military ball ammo into a 20" circle at 500 yards with iron sights. This translates into 1" at 25 yards. If you think that's easy try it sometime. No bench or bipod, field positions only. The Army only trains out to 300 meters.

Why is this important? Because Katrina happens. Because some disaffected group of people realizes that there is strength in numbers and takes to the streets with a bunch of Molotov cocktails. If the day workers in LA decided to riot for more rights, how long would it be before the riots spread to the other border states? Not long given some prior planning and organization by a small group of instigators with an agenda. The point is: Whatcha gonna do when the mob starts coming down your street? Hope that they don't burn your car, house, family?

The Appleseed project aims to get people interested and proficient in the use of their weapons, and in the 2nd Amendment. It's not enough for you to go to the range and pop twenty rounds off the sandbags. You must master your weapon and then get someone else interested and to those same skills to them.

Take a kid to a gun show. Take your son or daughter. Instruct them on the no touch/ask permission etiquette of these events. They'll be hooked.
Next time, take your kids and a couple of their friends. Instruct them...etc.

This is a very fun approach that pays dividends. I have been doing this for decades, and I still have a blast doing it.

One of my more memorable episodes was taking my 17 year old daughter and her friend (both absolutely stunning girls) to a gun show with them carrying a couple of rifles around for me. It turned more than one set of eyes and they remember it to this day. I have had a lot of fun with this, and I urge everyone else to try it. You will be glad that you did.

My dad bought me a .22 when I was about eight years old and I did the same for my boy when he was 8.
It was an Anschutz "Woodchucker" youth model, sized for youngsters at about 35 inches long. It was a clip-fed, bolt action rifle with iron sights and I kept it in the gun safe before it gradually became his gun.
His buddies just loved the look of it and I took several car loads of 9, 10 and 11 year olds to a farm south of Prior Lake and we chewed up a dozen boxes of .22s and annihilated paper targets. I let the other parents know what we'd planned for the day and, I was surprised when none of them objected.

I really think this is the issue that can kill Hillary's campaigh before it even hits start. While the MSM has allowed her to appear to do a 180 on everything else she is still a solid gun grabber and THAT is where she is vulnerable acccording to every honest Gun Rights related poll I've ever read.

It would be better to ease them into shooting by describing how much fun it is.

After I took my daughter to a shooting range for the first time, when we got home she said, "How come you never told me how much fun this is." Maybe we should be telling people it's fun, not that it's necessary to defend our liberties. Let them figure that out for themselves.

JPFO accepts Gentile members. I'm one. Join up. JPFO puts pressure on the NRA. They give the NRA a chance to look reasonable by comparison.

JPFO is one of the few gun rights groups that doesn't pretend the second amendment was about hunting, target shooting, or women defending themselves against rapists. All good reasons to own a gun, but not why the 2nd amendment is critical to a free society. JPFO is about the only organization that will publically state it. I'm actually not a member, but will most likely join.
