Season Finale: Rome, Episode 12, Kalends of February 9PM EST---Legio XIII Forever!
HBO ^ | 20 NOV 2005 | dcbryan1

Posted on 11/20/2005 3:52:19 PM PST by DCBryan1

As a result of their arena exploits, Pullo and Vorenus have become heroes to the Roman rank and file, causing Caesar to reward those he normally would punish. Pullo's unexpected return to Vorenus' household is not appreciated by his former slave Eirene. Caesar decides to overhaul the Senate by adding some unexpected new faces, to the chagrin of the old guard. And Servilia hurdles the final obstacle in her ambitious revenge scenario, at Niobe's expense.

2007? We've been waiting FOREVER for the final season of Soprano's. I'm to the point I don't even CARE anymore.

Agree on that...but it was a common practice. At least my history books tell me so. And they haven't been revised yet!

And when they are it will say "family love-making" or something else equally as disgusting.

Gosh, I have been to the movies twice in the last three years.

Master & Commander, and Team America.

I am so bad at names and faces.

Thanks for clearing that up, the kid looked familiar, but it was never going to come to me.

I actually read the two Claudius books which the BBC turned into a series a long time ago. That made this new series of interest to me.

My fondness of my long ago college courses on ancient history had nothing to do with it.

I think Caeser makes Vorenus a senator and trusted ally, which is why Servilla and her wuss son, Brutus, are afraid of him. Thus, Sevilla tells Vorenus that Niobe is a slut.

A fantastic show, though I'm a bit bothered by the portrayal of Caesar. Killing his political enemies, even just a couple does not comport even with his opponents propaganda about him. Caesar desired power and to be the First Man in Rome, this is true.

But being possessed of a great intelligence and skill in oration and writing, he was far more willing to challenge his opponents in debate or correspondence than he'd have been to kill them.

It was his kindness (clementia) to his enemies that got him killed. Well, that and he was the last to be killed for the vision of reform that the Gracchi brothers brought to life. The Patricians killed him because he was a threat to them, not because he destroyed the Republic.

It's why Octavian killed who 'needed killing' to consolidate his power. He learned the lesson of Caesar.

----

Great scene last week in the arena. When Pullo can't even stand up and shouts "thirteen!" and Lucius brings his leather bracer up to his mouth and fights back tears. Wow!

I tell you what, if they kill either Pullo or Vorenus, I won't watch again. Those two are wonderful.

I love those guys! They have a kind of Laurel and Hardy quality to them somehow.

But it's history, so it's good for you. At least, that's the excuse I like to make. ;)
