(Vanity) FreeRepublic Folding@Home Project Update (We're in the Top 1,200!)

OK, new thread for the next week.

First, a big shout out to the SETI members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 104 processors and 76 users. We have a number of new users in the team, with Clara Lou, fzx12345, SamfromLivingston, brityank, manwiththehands and Tami all popping onto the hit list this week.

Malsua, uriah and Ken in Texas are solidly in the top 10. Malsua is continuing to add systems and now accounts for 10% of the FR total. Great job!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 1196. We are poised to overtake (today):

carletonu (maybe in MN?)
Helms-Deep
2*ian
Dynadues
Soluchis
Greece and soon the
University of Pennsylvania!

We were passed by one team, SISD. My guess is that this team really is the computers of an Independent School District that were all "volunteered" to fold over the holidays. They are producing points at a rate of 37,000 points per day. As we gain members from the 100,000 FReepers that visit JimRob's place I expect that we will have a much greater long term growth than them.

Ok thanks for the help!

I've been trying to do this, to no avail. I'm simply not computer literate enough. I may try to tinker around in the future, but for now I think I'll stick with the relatively user friendly graphical program.

One question though, does "GUI" stand for "Graphical User Interface"?

Question for you. I was checking out fahstats.com (they show how many points I get per unit). Anyway, I did a search on Free, and found that there are 2 Free Republic teams. Do we possibly have some strays? Team#47733.

Clara, you do need to uninstall the previous graphical client. Next download the "No-nonsense" text-only console (with built-in Windows-service-install option) and save it in a folder (e.g. temp). Run the install from that folder and set the options to 1) start as a service, 2) low priority 30% and use Internet Explorer setting to get & send data; etc etc.

Very important!! Please disable ALL screen savers (windows screen savers, aquariums etc) since these eats up a lot of cpu cycles which may otherwise be utilized in crunching Folding@Home projects

I've seen whereby this is much more efficient in crunching data since unless you REALLY want to see the 'exciting' but meaningless display onscreen - it really does not help you in the work, which is what this project is all about imho.

So I would advise everyone in this thread to migrate over to the console version configured to start as a service because again:
1) it does not use any video processing
2) it does not conflict with any programs needing to use video usage
3) runs unobtrusively in the background at all times and
4) overall improvement in the amount of Work Units (WU) being processed.

When I download the software, will it ask me to enter the team name or what?

Assuming you're downloading the regular version (runs in the systray), when it first starts up you should be presented with a configuration screen. In the first tab on that screen ["User"] there is a place to enter the team number.

Thanks. I am planning on downloading the console version after reading the previous posts.

The console version has a different method for entering your information. You must first run it in a config mode before starting actual work.

I do like to check my progress now and then, but I'll keep that to a minimum.

I understand... I like to open up the display on occasion to see how long each frame takes to process. Doing this every now and then takes virtually nothing away from the work your machine can do... maybe 0.01% in a day. Big deal. :-)

IIRC, yes, it will. The console version is guided by command line arguments; it opens in a DOS shell window, and asks you multiple questions that must be answered. (I experimented with the console version a week+ ago but abandoned it; my memory may be faulty. The F@H FAQ has some help on using the console version.)

Thanks for your reply. I've started a new unit so, for the time being, I'm leaving things as they are. I did turn off my beloved screensaver, though. I'm saving a text of your post for future reference.

I just saw the above comment--interesting and possible. However, my school district wouldn't tolerate it. It's big on energy conservation over the holidays. Those computers would be turned off in about a day's time.
