Tehran plans nuclear weapon test by March

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Tehran is planning a nuclear weapons test before the Iranian New Year on March 20, 2006 says a group opposed to the regime in Tehran.

The Foundation for Democracy citing sources in the U.S and Iran offered no further information.

The FDI quotes sources in Iran that the high command of the Revolutionary Guards Air Force have issued new orders to Shahab-3 missile units, ordering them to move mobile missile launchers every 24 hours in view of a potential pre-emptive strike by the U.S. or Israel. The order was issued Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The group says the launchers move only at night, and have been instructed to change their positions "in a radius of 30 to 35 kilometers." Prior to the new orders the Shahab-3 units changed position on a weekly basis. Advance Shahab-3 units have been positioned in Kermanshah and Hamadan province, within striking distance of Israel. Reserve mobile launchers have been moved to Esfahan and Fars province.

move mobile missile launchers

With ground forces inside Iran, or RFID signatures wont this not matter where they move them? I don't think that a carpet bomb style raid would be planned on anything other than reactor sites, etc. No?

While I won't necessarily bet on a March 2006 test, I'm certain the Iranian's are a lot closer to having a bomb than the 2-4 year estimates that have been bantered about the media.

Nuke weapons only sane use is as a deterrent. Of course we appear to have the 'sane' part of the equation in question here.

They're going to tempt Israel into considering their own "test."

I know this is coming from an opposition group, but a nuclear test is immediately verifiable and not an event that can be hoaxed. I don't think this group would risk its credibility on something so easily contradictible.

That said, once a test takes place, a nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran becomes almost inevitable.

As I am too. The mullahs wouldn't be thumping their chests so loudly if they were strictly in the research phase.

2006 will be an interesting year indeed.

On who?

We can't be far from having to take their nuclear ambitions away. The Iranian youth better wake up soon and take control before time runs out.

"That said, once a test takes place, a nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran becomes almost inevitable."

If the Iranian program is as decentralized as they claim, it won't be easy to take out. It'll be very messy, in fact. That sort of carnage would be a catalyst for something much larger.

Not sure I believe this. You can't go from breaking the seals on the research facility to a functional bomb in a couple of months.

The bomb material would already have to exist, in which case there's no need to break the seals.

You don't know if you have the 'bomb' until you test it. India and Pakistan made plenty of devices but didn't know they were viable until they tested a few.

NK talks a big game but they don't have the cojones to test one of their devices.

I've been wondering about the timing of the symbolic U.N. seals removal.

It almost seemed too rehearsed. If I was a maniacal doomsday nut, I'd be working on the sly and already have nuclear material before starting more trouble.

I believe at least one ABomb is already being readied.

My bet would be Russia, although it would likely have been black market, as opposed to something more overt.

how odd....March is the date Israel said was the point of no return.....

I think that Israel has a clause in its Constitution (I believe it's Article 1) that's based on the old saying "those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it"....it's called

THE "NEVER AGAIN" CLAUSE!

Not neccessarily. Iran has at best right now an arsenal of 1 half-functional nuke. Israel has over 100. Iran knows in a nuclear exchange they'd be obliterated.

Imagine these decentralized facilities have been in the works for a very long time. Bet the Syrians moved what they got from Iraq into Iran. Appears to be a number of dark clouds gathering on the Middle East horizon.
