THE movement of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, alleged to have played a role in the anti-Sunni violence over the last few days, publicly made peace with political and religious Sunni leaders overnight.
Four sheikhs from the Sadr movement made a "pact of honour" with the conservative Sunni Muslim Scholars Association, and called for an end to attacks on places of worship, the shedding of blood and condemning any act leading to sedition.
The agreement was made in the particularly symbolic setting of Baghdad's premier Sunni mosque Abu Hanifa where the Shiite sheikhs prayed under the guidance of Sunni imam Abdel Salam al-Qubaissi.
The meeting was broadcast on television and the religious leaders all "condemned the blowing up of the Shiite mausoleum of Samarra as much as the acts of sabotage against the houses of God as well as the assassinations and terrorisation of Muslims".
The statement made reference to the key concerns of both communities with the violent aftermath to the attack on the Samarra mausoleum which saw more than 119 people die.
The sheikhs condemned "those who excommunicate Muslims" a reference to the "takfireen" or Islamist extremists like Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who justify killing fellow Muslims by declaring them non-Muslims.
"It is not permitted to spill the Iraqi blood and to touch the houses of God," said the statement, adding that any mosques taken over by another community should be returned.

What are ya trying to do? Give the UK Guardian, BBC, LA Times, Wcompost, a frigen heart attacked.
That wasn't CIC GBW call - He does not micromanage our Mil HQ's in Iraq (nor should he) - That call was made by both Mil and Civ HQ's on the ground in Iraq (U.S. as well as Iraqi HQ's).
Furthermore Sadr value is vastly over-hyped in all reality. By the MSM for their own agenda....in reality al-Sadr is Jesse Jackson light (in Iraq). He blows a lot of smoke and takes credit for much which he has completely no control over.
Should we take him out? That is debatable question - Continuing to over hype his significance however serves no purpose.
So right you are! Thanks for the correction. I have PATTON: Ordeal and Triumph sitting some linear eight feet from where I am typing. My brain is getting rather old. Off course I'll use the excuse, victory is in hand with glory and vice versa. Na, you won't by it. I goofed! I meant to say what you printed.
First off if he was there they tried to kill him. Secondly, if you think throwing a few hundred to a thousand Rangers in to the Tora Bora Mountains would have somehow "assured" of us killing UBL......You don't have a true understanding of those Mountains...nor how operations are run. Throwing a thousands Rangers on to that Mountain would not have assured us of sh*t!
Lastly, the reality is UBL was very likely gone out of Tora Bora by the time the heavy bombing began. He has left that region likely 7-10 days prior (regardless of what Gary Berntsen has to say....he is trying to sell a book ya know).
Regards,
If his absence since November 20th is any indication, Zarqawi may have lost more than just his initiative.
I'll correct it for you:
"This could go really bad for Zarqawi if the Iraqis realize that he and his merry band of headhunters have the most to lose by causing violence."
In Iraq, it was impossible for a democratic elections to be held without a total civil war breaking out to prevent it from coming to past. They where all wrong.
It was impossible for any form of constitution to be drafted let alone voted into existence, to many different factions in Iraq would make such a thing impossible. They where wrong.
Now they really are going into epileptic seizures. They are not capable of providing well though out factual journalism free from bias.
Let em choke on the foam spewing out of their mouths.
Well said and exactly right - The MSM (and weak-kneed politicans) are once again making fools of themselves in the eyes of history.
I'm so tired of the Osama at Tora Bora Barbra Streisand. Every time someone says it, I can't help but hear the wretched, foghorn drone of Massachusetts' long-faced junior Senator.
No sweat.
SHHHhhh now,, wouldn't want folks to think peace, maybe even a long-lasting one, is possible in Iraq.
wouldn't fit the bad news template. ;)
He's been quite since Nov 20th?
He's been quite since Nov 20th?
Agreed. The reality is UBL was had likely left the Tora Bora mountains a week or so earlier (then when our heavy bombing began there). Additionally the notion that if we would have put a few hundred to a thousands Rangers on the Mountains that this would have surely accomplished anything is utterly silly.
It's their warped version of the movie "Groundhog Day".
11/20 was when he was rumored to have been killed. To my knowledge, he's made no public statements since then.
