New York Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | IAN BISHOP

- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

Driving 55MPH in Texas is excruciating!

Hillary needs to start walking to work.

Being the little sneak she is, this might benefit the insurance companies more. I do remember 55 being THE speed for maximum efficiency but I'm sure the cars have changed over time and it surely doesn't cover every car model.

AND, if it does benefit insurance companies, don't expect them to lower the rate.

Wasn't it Carter that implemented conservation plans like the 55 mph speed limit and the the paper conservation plan to "use both sides of the paper when you wipe" plan.

Yep - and those were the *good* parts of Jimmy's tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Well, it could have been the Ford years, but I'm pretty sure it was in the Carter years.

It became law in 1974, so that covers both Nixon and Ford, but I really think it was before Nixon resigned.

OK that's it. If McPain is against the NMSL redeaux I'm for 'im..

"205(d) Repeal of the National Maximum Speed Limit Compliance Program Repeals the law that required that the States adhere to national maximum speed limits. This repeal allows each State to set any speed limit it wants, or no speed limit at all, on all vehicles. Congress set the national maximum speed limit at 55 mile per hour in 1974 as a fuel-saving measure in response to an oil embargo. It relaxed the law in 1987, when it raised the limit to 65 miles per hour on highways built to Interstate standards outside urbanized areas."

We certainly don't need to go through this cr@p again!

I think that it is 75, but it may be 80 mph.

If only there were some mechanism that would notify people when gas was in short supply and encourage them to conserve without needing micromanaging government regulations. We could call it "price" or something.

Why don't we just go back to the horse & buggy and not worry about gasoline?

"Wasn't the 55 limit passed during the Nixon years?"

I believe it was Carter. I was too young to remember the Nixon years but I do remember (vaguely) the Carter years and I remember the change to 55.

Amazing what you remember from childhood. Even as a child, I knew something wasn't right with Carter. ;)

I was absolutely sure that a Karl Rove plant was taking the pictures of Kerry during the campaign. Between the Blue Bunny Suit, the ballet steps he did throwing a football and the pressed "hunting camoflage", it just had to be Karl!!

NIXON, NIXON, NIXON. I remember seeing the oval office broadcast on the subject, I couldn't drive at the time so I didn't really know the imapct, but it was Nixon.

The 55 mph idea was bad to start or continue.

It is bad again for Hillary to try to re-start the 55 mph idea.
