self | August 11, 2006 | madison10

Posted on 08/11/2006 3:01:13 PM PDT by madison10

Has any one made a map, or done any tracking, of cities/towns the cell phones are being purchased? or of where the suspects are being picked up?

Thanks.

Don't forget the poor who can't afford a regular cell phone or someone who doesn't have credit (or bad credit). It's not right to punish them because they're poor. The system works fine, if people will simply report suspicious acts to the authorities and if the authorities will follow through on tips.

The average person who owns one isn't dishonest. They're just broke!

Why would someone need 1000's for new tracfones..... Why would they pay 30$-40$ for them.... Does anyone here have any common sense..... If someone wanted they could go on ebay and buy large amounts of (USED) tracfones for alot less.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-V180-GSM-handsets-Lot-of-58_W0QQitemZ220015632498QQihZ012QQcategoryZ45071QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

if they wanted the batteries to make drugs they could go to ebay and buy hunderds at a time

Do you realize how much these tracfones are selling for in other countries like China and Hong Kong.

If you have followed these stories more then just reading the head lines you will see that the FBI has dropped the charges or will be dropping the charges.

Right now there are 100's of people that are not middle eastern buying up every tracfone they can and reselling them and are making alot of money...

Thats why there are so many reports all over the US

You signed on just to post that?

Explain this as part of the "they were only trying to sell them to make money" theory:

Airport security information and airline manifests were among the items seized from two Michigan men arrested Tuesday in Marietta, now being held on felony terrorism charges. Federal authorities were working Wednesday evening to determine the significance of the documents.

“We also found instructions detailing how to access certain airline databases,” said Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks. “We passed all that information along to the FBI, and they’re reviewing it as we speak.”

Although the findings have caused authorities some concern, the documents do not relate to terrorism charges filed Wednesday in Marietta Municipal Court against Osama Sabhi Abulhassan, 20, and Ali Houssaiky, 20, both of Dearborn, Mich. Those charges surround the purchase of TracFones the men were said to be buying in bulk across the mid-Atlantic states.

The men were arrested Tuesday after purchasing several phones at a Marietta business. Police said employees at the store called and reported being concerned by the suspicious purchase and the demeanor of the men. Officers responded and stopped Abulhassan and Houssaiky after observing a minor traffic violation, according to court records. A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of several phones and more than $11,000 in cash.

Mincks said the men first told police the phones were for a family construction business. He said Abulhassan and Houssaiky later admitted they were taking the microchips from the phones and selling them to an individual in Dearborn. That individual, whose name was not released, is the target of an ongoing FBI terrorist investigation, Mincks said.

Dearborn is a known location of several terrorist cells and most recently has been the site of rallies in support of the Islamic terrorist group, Hezbollah.

Now why would this particular batch of cell phone fans feel the need to lie?

these phones are in real high demand

No kidding. This whole thread is about the high demand for the product. Glad you noticed.

Now why is it that the large cell phone purchases seem to be within just one demographic group? Shouldn't everyone be out trying this get rich quick scheme?

The van that they were using was borrowed.... The person they borrowed it from happened to work for the airport.... The officials stated the the paper they found were old passenger lists OLD INFO...

The reason you think this is only going on with a certain group is because NO ONE reports me buying large amounts of phones.... why because I am a 29 year old WHITE AMERICAN

Why does walmart and other stores have limits on the phones then
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060217-6205.html

that link explains why tracfone has placed limits on the cell phones

The person I sell the cellphones to has been doing this for over 7 YEARS... He sells millions of tracfones a year... Has there been millions of bombs set off using cellphones?

Gee Whiz! When I was born, most people didn't even have phones in their houses 'cause the phone was a fairly new invention that hung on the wall and didn't work too well. If someone had one, it wasn't much help as there weren't many people to talk with who also had one. If you called a doctor to come (assuming he even had a phone in his office), you usually either got well or died by the time he got to your house by horse and buggy. - Wives and mothers got the news of their soldiers in WWII being MIA or Killed in Action by telegram days later. - It was quiet, and if little Lester went off to college, he wasn't able to take one of those wall-hung monstrosities to hang off the side of his head and yak into endlessly.

What is your source for that information? Post the link to the web page please.

I thought the vehicle was from a rental company. Now you say it was borrowed, as if from a person they know. So, who's the guy who works at the airport? And why was this individual taking passenger lists home after work?

Why the lies, if they are just entrepreneurs who honestly think they are doing nothing wrong? They lied and said the phones were for a family construction business.

Mincks said the men first told police the phones were for a family construction business. He said Abulhassan and Houssaiky later admitted they were taking the microchips from the phones and selling them to an individual in Dearborn.

How much do they know about their client, the individual who is the target of an ongoing terrorist investigation- not neccessarily the cell phone investigation? Aren't you curious?

That individual, whose name was not released, is the target of an ongoing FBI terrorist investigation, Mincks said.

""How many freedoms must we give up to terrorists before we are safe?"

Do you fly often? We lost that battle years ago. When was the metal detector introduced to airports? Schools?"

I think part of the problem/confusion, is that we don't explicitly realize that we are in the middle of a war. Probably because it is not as much of a burden on civilians as previous wars were. During wartime, all sorts of rights have been curtailed. Historically speaking, all these annoyances (metal detectors, extra surveillance, etc.) are to be expected!

All you need to do is draw a circle ten miles in radius around every mosque in the USA.

Quite simple, actually.

The reason you think this is only going on with a certain group is because NO ONE reports me buying large amounts of phones.... why because I am a 29 year old WHITE AMERICAN

If you're doing it, someone is eventually going to report it and someone is eventually going to ask about the person to whom you are reselling the phones. John Walker Lindh was a young WHITE AMERICAN. Pearlman is a young white American. That didn't make them less a threat.

And yes, phones have been used to set off bombs, and people have died from those bombs, some of them American, even more of them Muslims, some Hindus, and Jews of course. That should make you think about what you're selling and to whom, particularly if they are going overseas. Chances are you don't know much at all about the purchaser or care so long as you get your money since you may not have known what the phones can be used for. Just because not every phone is used for that purpose does not mean that it hasn't been done before, or that it won't be done again. No one assumes that all phones like this are going to terrorists. We're only concerned that some are.

We've had one guy already get caught and convicted in a case where he provided "aid and comfort" to this country's enemies - al Qaeda - in the form of sleeping bags and *cell phones* and airline tickets. He was involved in a plot to obtain antiaircraft missiles, a plot to blow up US gas stations and damage bridges, among other things.

Homeland Security needs to set up a "sting" operation in selling these cell phones to see who shows up....
