Man Beaten To Death In Low-Security O.C. Jail

(CBS) SANTA ANA, Calif. A Mission Viejo man awaiting trial on suspicion of possessing child pornography for sale was beaten to death in a jail unit for low-security inmates, an Orange County sheriff's representative said Friday.

John Derek Chamberlain, 41, was "murdered by an inmate or inmates while in the shower" at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange, the department's Jim Amormino said.

Guards got a call of a "man down" about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and Chamberlain was declared dead at a hospital about an hour later, Amormino said.

Investigators were interviewing some 140 inmates, he said.

I hope they will reduce the sentences of the inmates that took care of this subhuman insect.

They should be executed. He was "awaiting trial" on "suspicion". In our system we are INNOCENT until proven guilty.

He was there for a reason. 98% of those on trial are guilty. I'm good with those odds.

Wait a second. He was "awaiting trial on suspicion of possessing child pornography for sale...". "Subhuman insect" he would have become after trial, when and if convicted and sentenced.

Uh, "innocent until proven guilty" was still the law the last time I checked, friend. I detest kiddie porn and those who traffic in it, but until someone is proven guilty in a court of law (or pleads guilty), the law says he's innocent.

There was never a trial. This guy was murdered.

The man was being tried on SUSPICION.

You are excusing the murder of a man that was merely accused.

My Dad was surrounded by police in the San Fernando Valley and held in custody in the mid 70's on "suspicion" of robbing a bank. Turned out that the automobile he was driving fit the description of the auto involved in the incident and he was in the area where it occurred.
They let him go after apprehending the real criminals. I would have been without a Dad if someone would have just decided he was scum and shot him.
Your solution dissolves all rights of the accused. What if YOU were accused ... you would change your mind pretty damn quick.

"There was never a trial."

Yes there was. It took place in the showers at the OC jail. Tried, convicted and executed. I'm drinking a nice glass of cab and rejoicing with a nice cigar.

Keep in mind that the GOP is "under suspicion" for harboring a representative who sent some questionable IMs. Sheesh. Anyone remember Janet Reno and Waco, Texas?

I'm good with those odds.

Then you're living in the wrong country.

Then there is always 'poetic justice". May it happen to you.

I agree. Shame some on this thread don't seem to understand that. Personally vigilante justice isn't something i'm too fond of. I kinda like the idea of the rule of law and using a trial to determine whether or not someone is guilty.
