AIR RACING IN NEVADA - Thunder Over Reno
Der Spiegel ^ | October 9, 2006 | Per Hinrichs

Posted on 10/10/2006 2:11:27 AM PDT by Atlantic Bridge

The fastest race in the world is in the air. Every year daredevil pilots meet in Reno, a gambler's paradise in the US state of Nevada, to find out who's the best.

First they appear only as flickering dots dancing above a mountain crest east of the Sierra Nevada. Then a droning hum is heard, as if a swarm of insects were approaching. And then they race past at speeds close to 800 kilometres an hour (497 mph), making an infernal racket: half a dozen gleaming metal hornets, led by a T-33 jet that leads the pack across the starting line and opens the race with a radio message: "Gentlemen, you have a race!"...

I think that the following (German) construction from WWII would have a good chance to win the race for piston-powered planes if it would be available due to its double motor configuration:

The serial model already made 770 km/h in 1945. It is sad that there is only one left at the depot of National Air and Space Museums in Washington DC (Silver-Hill). :-(

Would be the perfect toy to chase some records.

She is kind of homely (in my eyes) but boy, I bet she did go fast...

Personally, I would love to see a hopped up FW Longnose in a really cool glossy paint job with an oversize polished aluminum propellor compete...now THAT would be a wild thing indeed!

She could go head to head with THIS lovely gal...

Great picture!

They always do a mock race at the EAA Airventure every summer, and that Corsair leads the pack. (The Mustangs give it a good run for its money.)

What a blast to watch such racing. Give me Air races over NASCAR anyday. (No offense intended to our devoted NASCAR fans.)

Actually I just saw this plane on display at the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy center, next to Dulles Airport. Hard to believe such an ugly plane went so fast...
