Vatican cardinal says U.S.-Mexico fence "inhuman"

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal on Tuesday condemned the building of walls between countries to keep out immigrants and said Washington's plan to build a fence on the U.S.-Mexican border was part of an "inhuman program".

Cardinal Renato Martino made his comments at a news conference presenting Pope Benedict's message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Migrants and Refugees, in which the Pope called for more laws to help immigrants integrate.

"Speaking of borders, I must unfortunately say that in a world that greeted the fall of the Berlin Wall with joy, new walls are being built between neighborhood and neighborhood, city and city, nation and nation," said Martino, head of the Vatican's Council for Justice and Peace.

President Bush signed legislation last month approving the construction of a 700-mile (1,100-km) fence -- a move that angered Mexico's government.

Bush defends the fence as necessary to tighten control of the border to keep criminals and terrorists out.

Thousands of poor Mexicans risk their lives each year sneaking across the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border to seek jobs.

I vote to send the Vatican the expense Americans are being made to spend - thanks to decisions by our traitor courts and politicians who have turned their collective backs on the Constitution and American law.

Otherwise..........

And thousands more seek freebies.

The cardinal is entitled to his opinion, but I do notice that the Vatican has walls intended, presumably, to keep the uninvited out.

We don't see them sneaking into the church and stealing from their coffers.
Their walls seem to be working.

I wonder how long you or I would be allowed to wander around inside the Vatican unmolested, and when caught, how much consideration would be given to our demands to be recognised as Bishops of the Holy See.

It's inhuman, I tell you.

It is inhuman for Mexico's goverment to pimp Mexicans into coming over and working illegally here so they can keep their tanked economy afloat with our dollars.

The good old Vatican boilerplate that tells the USA to take care of everyone else in the world. The problem is that the people in too many countries know how to multiply but not how to divide. It's not our job to feed and theirs to breed.

The key probably is freebies. End the free health care, charge them for services, and many will come back home here to Mexico. But if you ARE going to do freebies, then build a wall. It won't stop them, but it WILL make someone feel good.

The key probably is freebies.

Indeed, ending the freebies is a big key. But it needs to be combined with some other keys -- huge fines for employers who hire illegals, and and end to the anchor baby law.

The Vatican should shut the heck up!

They have an embassy if they wish to express themselves to our government.

International public preaching on US domestic affairs is a thin line.

They need clean up their own house first. Get that log out of their own eye.

The Vatican can tell us how immoral it is to not let these people upgrade their lives. Maybe a contribution from their coffers to help the U S Govt pay for the illegals would bring more backbone to this Cardinals statement. A Catholic.

Fence to keep criminals out is concidered 'inhumane' as oppsoed to illegal criminals, and al qaeda/hizbollah & various other terrorist organizations sneaking across the open boarder and murdering U.S citizens which the Vatican deems is what now? Humane? Illegals costing the U.S billions of dallars & causing our own poor citizens to go without due to cutbacks- Which is the inhumane again? I'm confused

I think it's more inhumane for a nation to have a "Go North" economic policy which results in split families living in two different countries.
