President Bush is expected to reach out to the families of two Texas Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug smuggler.

White House staff contacted former agent Ignacio Ramos' family early Friday, assuring them the president would call them soon, said Monica Ramos, the agent's wife.

The encounter with the illegal occured after a chase, well away from the vehicle, where they did not identify him at close quarters as they did when they confronted him near the river. Nothing fishy...just the way it went down.

Those people need to go on a diet. That guy with the beard looks like he's pregnant with twins. There is a bunch of ex-frozen oranges that can be picked for orange juice. No mas tacos para tu!

"If it were true, it would have happened already."

I'm not so sure, Jim. President Bush has given every indication that he has no intention of closing the border or halting illegal immigration. He has paid lip service to doing so, but his actions clearly indicate that he intends to do nothing of the sort.

And there is every indication that the American people overwhelmingly want this.

He has also made no move to nullify the "Eminent Domain" decision, though the American people overwhelmingly want this done and fear this decision.

Why he is so unresponsive to the people taxes the rational mind.

Unfortunately, the American system of government has evolved to one that is not particularly responsive to the will of the people, as President Bush and the Republican Congress have demonstrated.

I am very glad he was not appointed...When you look at this case and then see the pat on the head for Socks Berger..It just makes crazy trying to figure it all out....We are fighting a war on terror but it seems that for some reason our politicians want to ignore the war on our southern borders....Do we have problems with gangs and illegals where I live here in Florida...Even the Sheriff has admitted it is out of hand...They are hiring allot of new deputys and many of us can hardly wait....I live in a nice retirement park but all around us looks like the show cops every single night.....

Lots of cases aren't black and white and clear cut.... That's the domain of the prosecution and defense attorneys to make the best of their case and let the jury judge the credibility and demeanor of each witness and piece of evidence...

Somewhere along the Appellate process we'll know more. It would be interesting to see the trial transcript but I've not seen it posted anywhere. Even then you don't have the flavor of the witness as they sat in the witness stand.

I still have trouble believing that the jury screwed the pooch on this one based upon some of the things that have been stipulate as fact in the trial proceedings. These guys compounded their problems with the cover up. And have now given rise to a suit by Aldrete which may or may not wind up costing the tax payers more dollars.

"They THOUGHT he had a weapon."

That's the stupidest assumption yet.

If I happened to haul 700 pounds of weed around there would be big firepower to protect it. Think or do something similar to thinking.

I was quoting the border agents.

Common sense dictates that if you're a drug runner you'll be packing heat. I know this.

First of all they never ever did a cover up...They had their supervisors there...The penalty for what they did according to the BP regs was five days suspension...There was several agents there that knew that they had shot at the drug dealer...They never ever thought that they hit the guy and did not find out till a month later..All they had to do was make a verbal report but because their supervisor was there and he or she never asked for it...They did not do it...and they regret it but it make it seem like some big Clinton cover up took place and I am sorry that is not true.....What they did was a mistake and not a cover up in my opinion...From listening to Johnny Sutton he still claims that the drug dealer was shot in the back and the Doc who did the surgery said he was not...I do not like dirty cops but I cannot stand a lawyer who embellishes the facts to get a conviction...Like the Duke case...It appears your convinced they are guilty...Fine that is your right...I have been looking at this case almost since it first came out...The case is full of holes and Mr Sutton needs to keep his facts straight when he appears on tv...In my opinion he fails the smell test...

They are guilty and convicted at this stage.... that's fact. Now their appeal may reverse that conviction and order a new trial or remand the case back for further action by the trial court. What I'm basing my thought process on is the jury heard the case and voted unanimous in 11 of the 12 charges against them.

Was the jury bought off?
Did they have incompetent counsel?
Did the jury members fail to follow their sworn jury charge?
Did the Judge railroad the jury?

I don't know and that's part of the appeals process.

Concerning the trial transcript...

There are plenty of versions of what actually took place when two Border Patrol agents, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, tried to chase down a drug smuggler in El Paso. But, unless you were there; unless you were present for the fifteen day trial; unless you paid $6,000.00 to read the 3000 pages of transcripts; unless you spoke with their fellow officers; unless you saw the affidavits from jurors who claimed that they were bullied into going along with the conviction, you cannot appreciate the enormity of this outrage.

$6,000.00????????

At this point and time what the jury did or did not do it not what I am concerned about...I am concerned about what is right..I am concerned about this Sutton and the things said about him on the other link...The process will play out...I hope better than what happened in the OJ trial...or all the child molesters that judges seem to be letting off with little or no time..or the 9th circuit cases that all seem to be over turned..Unfortunely right now I do not believe justice is any where close to right in this case...That really bothers me...I am concerned that a drug dealer is being given this type of treatment over two BP agents one of which is also a Navy Vet...In my heart I think there is only one reason for the President to call the family..That is a pardon and any thing else would be like putting a nail in the hearts of their family...They are about to lose their home and father of one of them who should be near retirement..Well he can forget that...Who seems to be profiting from this but the drug dealer....with his lawsuit...One of them wants to go back to being a BP agent..He loves what he is doing and he knows he made some mistakes but do they rise to this...That is what I am concerned about...Take some time and do some reading from some of the local papers on the border...What is wrong with this administration and those in the past that let this border get so out of hand over the years....I do not know about where you live...I can tell you we are paying for it big time where I live....We have lost several officers this past year to illegals..Either drunk or have done shot and killed a few of them...

I read the link. I don't believe Loya. His story is full of holes, biased judgments and he's very selective in presenting facts.

"The supervisor, clearly under pressure from Major Crimes Prosecutor Kanof, testified that he knew nothing of the pursuit, even though he had been on the scene and had been inspecting the van with several other agents."

So where's these other agents? I don't believe the supervisor lied.

"Davila claimed that he was shot in the back as he fled back to Mexico. The U.S. Army doctor who removed the bullet fragment from the smuggler's right groin disagreed. Although he was testifying as a government witness, he told the truth and stated, "The smuggler was not shot from behind". "He was in a running position, (bladed position) and pointing back with his left arm and hand when the bullet hit his left side of his left buttock and traveled to his right groin. "

That's not what the doc said. Also, no doc could possibly tell what position the left arm and hand were in. The perp was shot from behind, not from the front. A claim was also made by the agents that there was a struggle involving cuts. Why wasn't the agent shot then if the perp had a gun?

They are hiring allot of new deputys and many of us can hardly wait..

But the extra law enforcement wouldn't do much good if all law enforcement is fearful of being prosecuted themselves for being 'too aggressive'.

We do not seem to have that problem here...I live in a very conservative county...There seems to be allot of respect towards our LEO's here by most...I have one for a neighbor..I have a boat in one of the marinas and have gotten to know some of the marine officers...They are pretty good....If and when they have found a bad egg they deal with them very quickly and that is few and far between....At least they realize the problem and are trying to do something about it...We have a war going on here between the black and Hispanics over drug turf...I just hope they get a handle on it sooner rather than later....

Are you kidding me? Any Forensic scientist can tell the angle at which a bullet entered a body, the path it took and it's exit.

Why wasn't the agent shot then if the perp had a gun?

Ummm, the perp missed. Afterall, it says (i believe Campeon)Campeon fired 14 bullets. Was the perp hit 14 times?

The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice refuse to release information directly relating to the investigations of both BP agents, That's damned near a quote from Michael McCaul. He worked as a Federal Prosecutor.

Bush has ZERO credibility on the issue of border security or ILLEGAL immigration - 5 years after 9/11 it's still an absolute disgrace.

I can't believe that this wasn't done as part of a program to discourage anyone from interfering with illegal entry to this country possibly including drug traffic.

I think you're right on... Bush has pushed his open borders agenda from the time he walked into the White House. You can bet that some crooks in America are making big $$$ out of the drug trade, and don't want it to stop.

And the left arm and hand have what relationship to the left buttock where the bullet entered and the right groin where it lodged?..... The arm and hand could have been extended forward, to the rear, hanging down, up above his shoulder, straight out from the body as if giving a left turn signal, etc.....
