Man was arming for 'war,' FBI says
St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | 02/02/2007 | Robert Patrick

A St. Charles man obtained fully automatic weapons and tried to buy as many explosives as possible in preparation for what an associate called "war," the FBI says in court documents.

He bought three rifles and a Claymore anti-personnel mine and negotiated for a case of hand grenades, documents obtained by the Post-Dispatch show.

Mousa M. Abuelawi, 22, of Franjoe Court, was arrested Dec. 29 and charged on complaints accusing him of three counts of illegal possession or distribution of a machine gun and conspiracy to violate machine gun statutes.

Abuelawi, a Palestinian immigrant free on $50,000 bond, could not be reached. His brother declined to comment on his behalf. His lawyers, Scott Rosenblum and Gil Sison, did not return calls.

The context of the word "war" was not explained in court filings; the FBI declined to comment.

The man to whom the word was attributed, Thaer Abde Sumad, said in an interview Thursday that the purchases were not intended for terrorism but to make money supplying street gangs in a St. Louis turf war.

Sumad, 23, is not charged, although he is identified in an FBI affidavit as being present for one of the transactions.

He told a reporter he had no role in handling the firearms or explosives. He said he was at a meeting between Abuelawi and a federal informer outside a St. Louis gas station where Sumad works only because he knows both and wanted to say hello.

Sumad suggested that he and Abuelawi attracted special attention because of the sound of their names and their Arab ethnicity.

Abuelawi's lawyers have said he is a Palestinian immigrant.

Sumad is of Palestinian descent but was born in Indiana and raised in St. Louis, he said.

What the hell are Palestinians doing immigrating to our country?

Israel won't give them what they want. So they figure we will.

I couldn't agree with you more. Palestinians are the absolute dregs of muslim society, the cannon fodder, suiciders, who will do anything for their stupid islam. I become increasingly afraid that we will never wake up to the fact that we are at war.

Well, that's a big difference, isn't it? It's only the street gangs that were going to be using the rifles, anti-personnel mine, and hand grenades (he says), not terrorists. (/sarc)

Sumad suggested that he and Abuelawi attracted special attention because of the sound of their names and their Arab ethnicity.

And it's only a coincidence, I'm sure, that the "attention" they attracted based on the slim evidence of their names and ethnicity, actually led to pay dirt.

Mousa M. Abuelawi a Palestinian

Why are these people living here? Why doesn't his cult mentioned in the headline? I fear I know the answer...

It's hard to tell these *Palestinians* apart. For instance, there's Sirhan Sirhan, the Palestinian terrorist murderer, and Sirhan Sirhan, the Palestinian assassin involved in the murder of Robert F. Kennedy. It's so confusing!

This is pretty insane...

The rifles, well, that is whatever as far as I am concerned... but a claymore and a box of grenades, thats a little more serious.....

Since when do gangs utilize claymores in a turf war????

Sumad is of Palestinian descent but was born in Indiana and raised in St. Louis, he said.

Who to believe? A palestinian or a lawyer?

There are those who sit in high places in America who are under a delusion, believing that ISLAM is a religion of peace, and will only believe/admit it when one of them slashes their throat. Unfortunately, there will be a lot more innocent Americans who are going to die because of their stupidity!

And, guess what? In the case of Mr. Abuelawi, it worked!

The context of the word "war" was not explained in court filings

What, the FBI is unwilling to use the Moslem word for Holy War, i.e., "Jihad" anymore?

Pretty darned easy to figure out the context from a plain reading of this story to me. Of course, I am probably too stupid to figure out the nuances and grey areas of a moslem buying machine guns, claymores, and hand grenades...

Because he was born in Indiana, maybe?

That being true, he would be an American not a Palestinian then right?
