Russia is planning to buy new intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear submarines and possibly aircraft carriers as part of an ambitious military programme, it emerged yesterday. The defence minister, Sergei Ivanov, told parliament the military would have 17 new ballistic missiles this year - a hefty increase on the four deployed on average each year in recent times.

The purchases are part of a weapons modernisation programme for 2007-2015 worth about 5 trillion roubles (£96.4bn).

The programme envisages the deployment of 34 new silo-based Topol-M missiles and another 50 mounted on mobile launchers. So far, Russia has deployed more than 40 silo-based Topol-Ms. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and other officials haSo far, ve described the Topol-M as the backbone of Russia's arsenal, saying it can penetrate any missile defences.

Last week, Mr Putin dismissed US claims that missile defence sites it hopes to establish in Poland and the Czech Republic were intended to counter threats from Iran. He said Russia would respond by developing more efficient weapons.

I thought that we had already outspent the Soviet Union in the 80's into military oblivion. Communism is dead, remember?

I don't care who they are buying it from, I care who they target with those weapons.

Iceland? Falkland Islands? Tierra del Fuego?

True. But then we spent ourselves into oblivion with entitlement programs justified with the "peace" dividend.

A third battery of Interceptors is being installed at Fort Greely, which will have 21 Interceptors by the end of the year.

I don't think they are planning to "Buy" the stuff like they do here. All of Russia's Defense Industries are owned by the Russian government. Therefore, Russia would be manfacturing the weapons for itself.

Russia has control of the Russian, Kazakh, Belarussian, and the other Stan armies, and they all cling to the old Soviet traditions.

This is all smoke and mirrors. Russia is our friend.

No, I don't believe what I said. I don't believe the Russians have changed anything but their name and have adopted a pretend free enterprise system. Their ambitions are the same as when they were the USSR.

Thanks, blam. I posted the following over there.

The Communists, no matter the name they use, and the Islamists are together seeking the destruction of the West in their move toward world domination. The USA is their primary obstacle. However, each seeks domination and cannot tolerate the existence of the other once we are gone.

Each uses stealth, the Communist by disguising their intent and quietly infiltrating and destroying our cultural standards; The Islamist by quietly becoming baby factories to build a majority to use votes to get what they want. (The Democrats support illegal immigration for the same reason.)

Either way, they know they cannot defeat us militarily so they infiltrate and subvert us from within.

The Commumnists are playing a dangerous game by helping the Islamists. Surely they know this. I suppose they intend to beat them to the punch and use their superior fire power and brutality to annihilate them as they have always done once they gain power and control.

We are civilizations last best hope and we must destroy them (the left including the Democrats) here at home, legally of course, and return to our roots. The rest we can handle.

Who's going to man these new military toys? Russia's population is retracting. The men are drinking antifreeze to get drunk and the women are leaving in droves.
