WASHINGTON: Republican presidential frontrunner Rudolph Giuliani yesterday appealed to the centre-ground of US politics on the polarising issue of abortion, and restated his opposition to an early pullout from Iraq. The former mayor of New York, who shot to global prominence after the September 11 attacks of 2001, staked out his own dislike of abortion but said he supported a womans right to choose.
I personally oppose it but I believe that that should be a choice that someone else gets to make, Giuliani, who is Roman Catholic, said on Fox News Sunday. That is a stand that will almost certainly lose him votes from the Christian right in next years primary elections to choose the Republican partys candidate to succeed President George W Bush.
But Giuliani believes that his stand will resonate with most Americans, who polls show to be against rolling back the Supreme Courts landmark Roe v Wade ruling permitting abortion even if they personally oppose the practice.
He said he was trying to broaden the base of the Republican party as issues surrounding terrorism and the economy are so important that we have to have the biggest outreach possible.
The former New York leader is also under fire from Christian conservatives over his moderate positions on gay marriage and gun control, and his personal life he has been married three times.
But Giuliani, who has pulled ahead of rival 2008 contender and Arizona Senator John McCain, said he should be judged on his record from the aftermath of 9/11 and for ridding New York of rampant crime and economic decline.
Nobodys perfect. Ive made mistakes in my life. Ive prayed about them, he said. In my case, you can judge me on my public record.

This could explain the strange sweating that Rooty has been doing lately.
God and man have turned up the thermostat.
Rooty knows he's on the Hot Seat straight to Political Hell!
"Rooty knows he's on the Hot Seat straight to Political Hell!"
LOL! Well stated!
My, my——Rooty has a color to go with every outfit. Betcha Juti is darn jealous. LOL.
Rudy has a different color for each position on each issue! LOL!
He should switch parties and run as a Democrat.
The GOP primary is giving a Sister Souljah moment to prolifers.
Yeah, that's a "I support the troops but oppose the war" type of dichotomy favored by politicains of all stripes.
And it's contempable.
>>>>>>>>>>I personally am against the taking of human life.... I believe it is between ones self, the law and God.
Thats exactly Giuliani`s position. You agreed with Rooty Toot and didn't even know it.
Okay, I understand now.
God listens to Rudy - that I'm sure of. The problem is that God has been answering Rudy, but Rudy is not listening.
Dear RNC,
If Rudy wins the primaries, the November election will be liberal v. liberal and conservatism will have already lost.
It’s not about party, it’s about politics. I am a Republican when they are conservative, and not when they are not. I’ve never knowingly voted for a pro-abortion gungrabbing liberal and I’m not about to start now.
If the GOP nominates a pro-abortion gungrabbing liberal like Rudy, they forfeit my vote, and the consequences will be their fault not mine.
There are many like me. Enough to cost a few states.
Signed,
A Christian Conservative
It’s an issue with which God is very concerned. He will bless this nation immeasurably when abortion is dealt with. We can’t continue to slap God in the face and expect Him to protect us, prosper us, and all the other good stuff we want from Him. Homosexuality and Abortion may seem like small potatoes to many in this country, but our continued prosperity hinges on how we deal with those two.
Agreed.
America has been seriously shunning God for the last 40 years.
Paybacks are he!!.
There...fixed it for you. :-)
He’s against terrorism — except for that against the littlest, most vulnerable.
Abortion is not good for the unborn, nor for women, nor for society as a whole.
You are correct, except I realise I agree with Giuliani, along with millions of others.
And proud of it too, no doubt.
Frankly, I don't trust anything Giuliani says. So I don't believe he personally opposes abortion, or believes its an issue"between ones self, the law and God." In fact, I don't think Rudy even cares about the abortion issue. Unlike Reagan, its irrelevant to Rudy.
Now we know. On the abortion issue you don't support the rights of the unborn or even respect them. You don't stand with pro-lifers, you stand with an abortionist. And you believe the Constitution contains the right of a woman to kill her unborn child, whenever she sees fit to do so.
Gotcha!
I don’t think pride fits in anywhere when it comes to what one believes...it’s just the way God made me. Otherwise, I would think differently.
I don’t know enough about Mr. Giuliani at this point, to make any decision. I do know that I don’t think I agree with his policy towards personal weapons, but I have not listened to him much.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think any presidential candidate thinks much about abortion, other than which position will get them the most votes. No president seems to put much effort into abortion after they are elected...mainly because they have many more important issues to deal with.
I don’t think there is any gotcha, as I have never hidden my beliefs, but feel free to say you got me.
As I have said for many years, I believe moral decisions are dependent upon the circumstances. Taking a human life is OK if it is war or self-defense or capital punishment, but it is not OK if it is murder...either way, the result is the same. It’s up to the laws, the individual and their relationship with God. Besides, God creates women that abort, just as He creates women that do not, knowing what they are going to do, doesn’t He?
