Who are you to judge? Who are you to say that the more than slightly creepy 39-year-old woman from Arkansas who just gave birth to her 16th child yes that's right 16 kids and try not to cringe in phantom vaginal pain when you say it, who are you to say Michelle Duggar is not more than a little unhinged and sad and lost?
And furthermore, who are you to suggest that her equally troubling husband -- whose name is, of course, Jim Bob and he's hankerin' to be a Republican senator and try not to wince in sociopolitical pain when you say that -- isn't more than a little numb to the real world, and that bringing 16 hungry mewling attention-deprived kids (and she wants more! Yay!) into this exhausted world zips right by "touching" and races right past "disturbing" and lurches its way, heaving and gasping and sweating from the karmic armpits, straight into "Oh my God, what the hell is wrong with you people?"
But that would be, you know, mean. Mean and callous to suggest that this might be the most disquieting photo you see all year, this bizarre Duggar family of 18 spotless white hyperreligious interchangeable people with alarmingly bad hair, the kids ranging in ages from 1 to 17, worse than those nuked Smurfs in that UNICEF commercial and worse than all the horrific rubble in Pakistan and worse than the cluster-bomb nightmare that is Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise having a child as they suck the skin from each other's Scientological faces and even worse than that huge 13-foot python which ate that six-foot alligator and then exploded.

I have taught my daughter that she has gifts and talents from God and she honors God when she discovers them and fully develops them. This is a lifetime pursuit that both men and women are called to do.
Judging by the pictures, the Horde appears to be happy, well-fed, properly-dressed, and clean-scrubbed. That's good enough for me.
And, fortunately, they appear to live on a nice, forested ranch large enough to accomodate 16 kids. (I can't even imagine the insanity of raising 16 small humans in the Suburbs -- I'm afraid that not a week would go by without one of the young'uns getting run over by a passing Wal*Mart truck. But that doesn't appear to be the case, here).
What is Morford bitching about? I thought Liberals believed in "Live and let Live". If it's okay for San Francisco Homosexuals to live in DINK households (Double-Income, No-Kids) which provide no demographic basis for the continuation of Western Civilization, what's wrong with a couple of Arkansas Heterosexuals picking up the demographic slack?

Normal families with two or three children have problems if two kids are born a year and a half apart; the mother has a new baby to deal with right at the point at which the first kid should be taking the biggest steps in learning how to talk. Even bright kids can check out as mildly retarded at age 5 - 6 on account of that.
If she were a welfare mom with 16 kids this author wouldn’t have a problem with it.

You seem unaware that for the vast bulk of human history families this have size been pretty normal across all cultures. Really you should read more.

Here's a clue - the father is also there much of the time and the other children are well spoken and do just fine for teaching language skills.
The alternative is to advocate State intervention of some sort.

Let the Duggars breed like sex-addled jackrabbits if they wish. It's far preferable to leave them to their own devices, as a Family Unit, than for the "Community" to take an interest of any sort.
I personally think that the proper Conservative response to this "Story" should be:
"Ho hum. Not for me, but more power to 'em if they can manage. What's for lunch?"

I’m not advocating any sort of govt. action; merely noting that there are real reasons why most people don’t live like that. Usually when I read about something like that, it involves something which costs taxpayers money. When a whole society does that, you’re usually in a “palestinian” “refugee camp” or in the Albanian infested side of Kosovo.
