WASHINGTON – George W. Bush isn't the first Republican president to face a full-blown immigration crisis on the US-Mexican border.
Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.
President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents - less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.

Excellent article. Ike was too liberal to suite my taste, but he got it right on this issue. And the “culture of corruption” issue associated with illegal immigrants is once again in full swing.
It can be done ping...
Oh, Ike solved it. I guess that’s why we don’t have a problem with it today. Well, that’s a load off my mind.
Of course it can. But first you must want to do it! And that will never happen with GWB!
To every RINO and Hate-America-First bleeding heart liberal; read this and tell me we cannot deal with illegals.
Sixty years ago we had the guts to enforce immigration laws. It is time to do it again.
If we don't our flag will be burned on every street corner in America. Not just at the amnesty immigration rallies.
I've sent this link to every Senator and Congressman in my home state, and have received no response. Even the RNC is immune to facts. It is time to make them listen.
Thank you sourcery for posting this.
And I hope everyone who reads it will take ten minutes to send it to their representatives.
Rush and Sean should hear from thousands of us too.
The problem isn’t with what Ike did, it’s that our leaders today are too P C, they have lost their spine and turned in parts of their manhood to get elected.
By mid-July, the crackdown extended northward into Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, and eastward to Texas.
By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily.
Finally, this has been posted in front of fellow FReepers. It’s a great day. I hope we run with it and force facts down the throats of the lilly-limp-wristed, spineless toads in Washington and hold them accountable for immigration law enforcement.
On another thread sgtbono2002 was asserting that we can’t possibly deport 20,000,000 illegal aliens.
What say you, Ramius and navyblue?
"Then on June 17, 1954, what was called "Operation Wetback" began. Because political resistance was lower in California and Arizona, the roundup of aliens began there. Some 750 agents swept northward through agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Another 488,000, fearing arrest, had fled the country."
Today, politicians are telling us we can't enforce our laws. We can't deport these people. We have to let them "assimilate." Hell, they don't want to. They burn our flag, flip us the bird, and tell us to F-off in Spanish.
Just say NO to Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

Pearce calls on 'Operation Wetback' for illegals (AZ)
We need visibility on this. Even Thompson and Hunter probably don't know about it. I'd like to see Tony Snow questioned on this next Monday.
Earl Warren vs. Roberts and Alito - that’s one difference in Ike and GWB. Ike let the French and English down when they tried to take back the Suez. He was President during two ressions and an hourly wage rate of about 1.50 for people working anything but in a factory. Liberal Ike must have learned his politics from Monty.
In all reality I think it doesn’t matter anymore.
There’s no action that could be taken about the borders that will be “good enough” and therefore it will be shouted down, and nothing will be done.
Both sides have worked their butts off to make sure nothing happens. So... that’s the way people want it, I guess.
If the Incumbents are not removed they will drive America
to a civil war.
